Sounds like me, only definitely a different band, for which I pay too much for import CDs, spout of many many quotes at random intervals and even right them on boards and in Susan's little book thing and in sigs and my AOL profile and have created a website and a mailing list and also belong to ANOTHER mailing list and a newsgroup, and and overanalyze the songs (and get certain othe fans yelling at me) and compare certain songs to Kafka's "Metamorphosis" or to "Death of a Salesman" and one to a song in "Rocky Horror Pictures Show" and go to New Jersey to watch a video on a certain member who from then on controls all my thoughts and read "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" because the description on the back remind me of the singer (and only Alley and I understand that)

The band is the Bonzo Dog Band. The member is Vivian Stanshall.

Is that a "huh?" about that episode, or about Northern Exposure? Northern Exposure was a long running drama series about a little town in the middle of nowhere where everyday life was like a.t.d. Imagine going to the corner shop for some baked beans and having a conversation like the offtopic threads we have here, a place where even unschooled labourers can hold forth on topics like reincarnation, arthouse cinema, or stocks and shares. Weird things would happen too, sort of supernatural or fantasy stuff, like one week Maggie's dead boyfriend turned up reincarnated as a dog. Really amazing series.

The central character, the "Daria" if you will, was the doctor, Joel Fleishmann, who was a New Yorker who hated rural life but was contracted to work there for three years to pay off his medical school fees. He spends his whole time basically dissing the place despite the fact that in many ways he's very like the townsfolk, ie. an intellectual. But they're always pushing the boundaries of his belief system with weird goings that they treat as commonplace but which his rational mind won't accept, so he spends his time deriding them and accusing them of being superstitious hicks. It's sort of light comedy but quite deep drama, and rather fortean as you never quite get to the bottom of the strange things that happen.

OMG...Shez...Happydude...I haven't watched that show in AGES!!! I used to be SO addicted to "Northern Exposure"! I thought Maggie was my hero -- actually, Maggie does kinda remind me a little of Daria...I mean, they're both strong- willed, independent women who don't need a man to determine who they are, AND they're superintelligent and can have a biting wit (with the sarcasm to partner it with) when the situation calls for it.

I also...um...I also thought Ed was really cute...*giggle*...and Chris, too. *blush*

Um...oh, and what was the name of that store owner? Mary Anne? I thought she was cool, too. Actually, I would've loved to have lived in Cicely. It seemed to be such a really cool place to live in, the kind of town where one could discuss Nietzche (sp? -- it's been a while since I had to read him) and fishing in the same conversation, all while having a nice cup of coffee and a couple of donuts. And listening to Patsy Cline or Louis Armstrong on the radio. :)

Yeah, I started watching it during the second series and loved it. However it got tired towards the end and I lost interest after Joel left.

Maggie was great, and of course very beautiful. I liked Joel too. That was yet another classic abstract-romantic double act like Richard & Caroline, Mulder & Sculley ... Daria & Trent?

My mind went blank on this and I had to look it up... Ruth-Anne was her name. It was a change to see old people portrayed as real and vibrant people, especially Ruth Anne but also various others too. TV series generally baulks at having any characters older than their twenties or thirties.

Yeah it was an idyllic intellectuals town, I wish my local shopkeeper talked about Fellini and suchlike! Cicely was basically Utopia for those of us over on the right hand side of the IQ curve.

I started watching it from the beginning. The first episode is classic, and if you concentrate you'll find yourself laughing at an obvious Brand/Falsey (show creators) self-reference.

You know, I considered her to be my hero because of the way she stood up to Joel's attitude. And finally, when she had Joel pretty much worn down, she took him up. So in essence she had him and their relationship in the palm of her hand.

My dad used to like her, too. He considered her attractive, like you do.

Thank you! I knew it was a something Anne. She was so cool. I want to be like her when I'm older, still sharp as a pin AND in no need of "that ol' rockin' chair" (to quote George Jones). I did notice how "Northern Exposure" showed older people to be normal instead of playing off stereotypes. Maurice Minnifield rocked. Oh shoot -- I've just blanked out again -- who was the owner of the Roslyn (restaurant/saloon)? Something Vincour...I thought he was very cool, as well. Interesting how Shelly was with him (older male/younger female), while Shelly's mom was with a younger guy.

I know, right? OK, picture it -- radio station DJ who reads voraciously and shows it off on the air. Everybody in town has a deep appreciation for, well, deep thinking (even Shelly -- remember the TV episode, where she became addicted to television? She was seeing a lot of various types of programming from all over the world, and was even able to show quite a lot of intelligence while ordering all that cubic zirconium jewelry from the shopping channel). Man, I wish there were a place like that on the map.

Perhaps there is, and we can all relocate there, and bring Daria and Jane along, too. I'm sure they'd LOVE a Cicely-type community. Probably would complain about the cold for a while, but then warm up when they'd get to discuss Camus and Voltaire with almost anyone they meet.

I must admit: I too have often found myself daydreaming of a life in Cicely. "Glacier Dropsy" would be a small price to pay. However, I'm not sure if I'd want to swap dreams with Maurice. :-)

There's the actual town where it was filmed, people go on tours there to see all the sights. I don't suppose the townsfolk are like in the TV series though. The place is called Roslyn, hence the cafe in the title sequence (the TV crew added the 's to make it "Roslyn's Cafe"). I can't remember where it is though, but I don't think it's in Alaska. Sleetmute really exists though.

Well, it would be nice if the place was actually LIKE Cicely. Sure, the scenery's beautiful, but then again so's the scenery in a lot of other small towns located where the show was filmed (in northwestern Washington state, I believe -- either that or in southeastern B.C.). I was mainly talking about the intellectualism of the town and how it seemed to exist in a community where such a thing seemed remote.

I knew about the tours, though.

Hmm, at that bitrate Ed Chigliak's little movie would take about 15MB!
