Non-daria related posts.

This is a Daria Newgroup. 67.9% of all posts are not related to Daria. Anyone find that strange.

In usenet, meta-discussions (eg. about the purpose of a newsgroup) are normally considered on-topic. As to whether the 67.9% of non-Daria stuff is off-topic would depend on whether the newsgroup charter specifies it's only for discussing Daria.

By way of example, I'm on a fortean mailing list (as in "Fortean Times" magazine) where discussion of anything "of interest to forteans" is also considered on-topic, which basically means that anything goes. If the same were true of this newsgroup, then any discussion would be on-topic provided we're all bona fide Daria fans.

I think that explictly having such a rule would be a bit unwise, but the principle of it is fair enough, in that a lot of us share Daria's mindset to some degree, and if this means we have some common interests, or a similar outlook on life generally, then it should be ok to have discussions about such stuff as long as it doesn't get out of hand and cause major objections or flaming.

Daria tends to crop up in most of the discussions at some point anyway I think. I just did a search for "Daria" in the offtopic "Happy Thanksgiving" thread and about 10% of the 134 articles contain something substantive about either Daria, the show generally, or related matters like Daria websites.

Just to keep this offtopic, there's a classic My So-Called Life quote where Jordan (who has learning difficulties) asks Brian (who's one of those A* students, like someone here who shall remain nameless) what "ironic" means, and Brian says, "It's when you notice the component of weirdness in a situation". (Jordan subsequently manages to use the word "ironic" correctly in conversation, much to people's amazement.)

There are two very good reasons for this:

1. There are no new Daria episodes and there won't be any for a while so we're limited to discussing the ones that have already been thoroughly discussed.

2. EVERYTHING is related to Daria! That's the wonder of this magnificent show! If we can't discuss Daria, then we can discuss the things that Daria is interested in:

ART ("I'm a huge Goya fanatic.") LITERATURE ("You're good with your reading and writing and stuff...") PHILOSOPHY (" 'Life is a meaningless descent into the void.' ") SCIENCE ("Did you know they can make makeup now without harming animals?") SOCIOLOGY ("...torture for some subculture's idea of beauty.") ECONOMICS ("10?," "20!," "15," "Done!" "...this is going to work out for both of us...") ETHICS ("Whoever said life was fair?...It must have been a quarterback.") MILITARY SCIENCE ("...we can attack from three sides, drive them out to the side they think is safe...") PSYCHOLOGY ("I'd like them to do something together, something that'll really make them suffer.") MEDICINE ("You really should get cheese-less pizza Dad, it's much healthier.")

and, of course CURRENT EVENTS ("I have a headache. Is that current enough for you?")

Daria is such a rich source of discussion material. It's no wonder the discussions might seem to wander a bit.

Compared to most news groups, with threads a hundred messages long full of "You suck!...No, YOU Suck!...," I think alt.tv.daria is pretty much on track. We shouldn't expect it to stay too close on topic. "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

I acknowledge that I'm a newbie here, but I get the impression that the desultory and sometimes erudite discussion we see here says something about the sort of people who like Daria.

Agreed!! Sounds like me trying to relate all my books to Monty Python (besides those directly related I came up with ones they did sketches on (Nietzsche? He's the one with an "s") and ones they worked with (Terry Southern etc)... probably could do that with Daria. Like we're doing Moby Dick in American Lit now... How can you just sit there and read a book about an animal? That is so second grade... Hmm... let me think. "Breakfast of Champions" was on a list of books on the chalkboard on the episode where Daria writes that story, as was 1984....
