DVD bootlegs

Ok, the group is dead, but I thought I'd toss this message out there anyways :) I'm tempted to get one of the bootleg dvd sets showing up on Ebay. Are these new HK imports, or still home made copies? The price for all the episodes has dropped enough that I assume some company is churning these out.

And, while it might offer Viacom and/or MTV an impression of the *demand* for such a product, it could also reduce the chances of its (hopefully) eventual arrival.

I think the best idea would be to add your signature to the petitions available, if you haven't already. If a group of Malaysians(?) can regain the use of their water from a corporation that privatized it, then maybe we can get an uncut, uncensored *official* DVD complete with extras that expand on the Daria experience.

It's something to shoot for.

Either way, I'd be careful.

Nickelodeon's edits aside, the video files that I've seen were available in low as well as high quality so, at whatever price the collection's being offered, you could be getting badly edited episodes with crackling sound and random, show-stopping interrupts.

In the end, though, the decision is yours.

Some possibilities:

1. The merchant reckoned the fans willing to pay the early-adopter premium had all been milked, so dropped the price to access the next tier of the market.

2. Another merchant started selling them, and competition brought the price down.

3. Fans with DVD burners started undermining the merchants by making further copies to pass on to their friends, driving down the price for paid-for copies.

4. The merchant used the profits from the first sets to invest in a bulk duplication setup (or subcontracted the duplication), bringing the merchant's costs down: they can now make the same profit with lower prices.

If professional pirates have taken up _Daria_, and if their product is any good, Viacom need to get moving quickly if they're to make loadsa money from DVD sales.

Anyone got a trip to Hong Kong planned? Or got friends in HK? A bit of browsing in the DVD stalls on street markets would answer this question.

The sets are constantly advertised on eBay. Do a search on Daria - there's usually 3-4 sets being sold. I agree with all your possibilities but believe that number 2 is the most likely. Someone started making copies of copies and selling them.

The ones I've seen are of average quality. There are more than one set. Different people made their own copies then edited for DVD burning. So you find 4 or 5 or 6 DVDs in a set depending on the quality, format, compression, etc. One was even done in RM which really sucked.

eBay seems to leave these guys alone as long as they are not copying released DVDs. So several series also show up in amateur release: Duckman, 2 Angry Beavers, etc. When official releases show up, say like the Adult Swim stuff, the bootlegs disappear instantly.

My guess is that industry doesn't go after the bootleggers if they are copying from broadcasts. That is still technically legal, though you're not supposed to resell the content.

Hell, if a company is putting these out I wouldn't be surprised if they bought one of the fan-produced sets and bootleged that. They've been known to use anime fansub translations on their anime dvd's instead of doing a bad translation themselves.
