Ok. This episode was basically that article Val wrote in reverse. It bashed one facet of culture as mercilessly and as unfairly as the "Anti-teen" article bashed Daria's facet of culture.

I actually thought this was one of the better episodes of the whole season. Although I'm suprised it took Daria so long to lose patience with Val and tell her off. I think what's being overlooked is the level of parody in this episode. Notice Val's constant reference's to "Drew". I believe there's a bit of poking fun at the new Drew Barrymore movie Never Been Kissed in this episode. Could just be me though.

To an extent, yes.
On the contrary, I think that the facet of culture represented by "Val" is an exceedingly destructive one, especially from the viewpoint of the teenage recipients of the message, and that it *deserves* to be "bashed". There are a hell of a lot of other cultural sources (including the rest of MTV) which spend their time *promoting* it. Why can't just *one* show expose it for the hollow, senseless thing that it is?

Of course the significance of "Val" is revealed in the episode title: "The Lost Girls." An obvious reference to the James Barrie story "Peter Pan," Val is the girl who refuses to grow up. I think there needs to be a distinction between "growing up" and "growing old." Growing up means being able to participate in the joys of life that are restricted to adults--and I don't mean sex and alcohol. A twenty-something/thirty-something woman still pretending to be a high-schooler? That's really pathetic. Most high-schoolers envy such an individual their majority and can hardly wait until they're able to get out into the world and participate fully. Is there anyone whose high school experience was so wonderful they would like to live it all over again? If so, would it be worth giving up what you have now? (Directed, of course, to those who have seen high school from both sides.) Of the rest, is there anyone now in high school (or maybe even college) who hopes these halcyon years never end?

Yes. A distinction Val wasn't making. Note how haglike she looked next to, say, Helen (who may actually be older). Helen *is* functioning as an adult, rather than trying to be mistaken for a teenager, even though she misses the days of her youth.. She's a lovely adult; she'd be a grotesquely farcical teenager.
