Brittany

One strange thing on Daria is that I'd think that Brittany would more likely be a friend of Quinn than Daria. While I know she's not exactly busom buddies w/ Daria, she is seen more w/ Daria than Quinn.

I think the reason that Brittany is more interested in hanging around Daria is that she knows that Daria is not a threat to her or her popularity. Quinn is cute and popular and Brittany feels very threatened by that. Besides that, Daria has the brains to help her in school when she needs it.

The first was of course Lab Brat where Brittany was deluded into thinking that Quinn and Daria were taking her man away from her. The second was Fair Enough when Kevin was chosen to be leading man opposite Quinn in the play, which was promptly followed by a distressed "Eep!" from Brittany. Also note that Quinn only joined the play because she thought it would make her popular, as was previously suggested by Brittany ("We'll be the most popular ones there") - probably to upstage Brittany. I think it's safe to say there exists a slight rivalry between Brittany and Quinn.

I disagree. I think there is a growing concurrence that Brittany is actually smarter than she seems or lets on, to even herself, "I think I'm smarter than you think I am even though I'm not as smart as the really smart smart people..." I think that Brittany actually values Daria because of her brain and not because of some trivial concern over potential competition. I think even Daria suspects that Brittany might be just a little smarter than everyone suspects based on the story line she wrote in "Write Where it Hurts" in which she depicted Brittany as being relieved that Kevin had run off with Jane. I still think there's some slight potential for a friendship between Daria and Brittany on some level. A friendship between a "popular" and a "brain"? It's not impossible, just rare.

Yep. Though Daria was inflicting a fate worse than death on Jane ... and I don't mean the sex part, I mean the conversation.

Especially after high school, or if something happened which made Brittany really need a REAL friend.

In fact nobody at any school would ever do such a thing, which is probably how Quinn has managed to keep the lid on Daria being her sister for so long - notice that everyone in Daria's year knows Quinn is her sister, but several of the people in Quinn's own year, ie. the fashion club, seem to remain oblivious.

Life is rarely that cut-and-dried, unfortunately. Being in different grades doesn't keep them from being friends. What *does* keep them from being friends is that they're both competitive about the same thing, i.e. cuteness and being popular (re: "The Lab Brat" and "Fair Enough"). Plus, Brittany is so possessive about Kevin, she'd think that Quinn would be trying to steal him away from her every chance she got... and she'd probably be right. :-)
