You know it occurs to me that Daria is setting a bad example to young people by giving the impression that you can stand up for your principles by using such wimpy weapons as words or peaceful civil disobedience. That she doesn't pack a gun in her pocket to see off potential rapists suggests to me that maybe she's soft on crime. Is Daria "asking for it"? Shouldn't she give up on the sarcasm and simply blow people like Kevin away when they insult her? Surely that would be the intelligent way for her to deal with life's problems. If it came to the crunch I'm sure Helen could get her off on a plea of self-defence.

Then again rember Doom/Doom II in it's original form can be played on older clunkier hardware that perhaps won't support the more modern games. Also not to say that the modern games like Half Life which also has a great story, are not just as good either.

I like this. The show could turn into a cartoon version of "the Survivors." Every week, we guess which person Daria will blow away. It works for CBS.

Problem is, this kind of deux-ex-machina would blow away the plot, too. We'd be left with Daria and Jane doing jumping jacks for the remaining 25 minutes or so.

Just wanted to say i found your 'Daria and guns' post very astute (and the word i was looking for is...?). Gun people are annoying - in fact i find it mildly intimidating when they go on about how they need their guns and get angry that i'm "trying to take [their] rights away"... Perhaps my subconcious (why can i never spell that word?) interprets this as "I am going to shoot you". :)

I find the characterizations very compelling, Daria in particular. A character who doesn't doesn't prostitute her values for mere popularity is unusual and entertaining.

The quality of the writing is consistently better than most live-action series. It deals with issues without becoming overly preachy or falling into self-parody.

The humor is deliciously subtle, to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if Dennis Miller was one of the writers. The satire is biting without being cruel.

The visual style is arresting without being distracting.

Unexpectedly, I found the last two episodes my favorites, although I have enjoyed many others, including the first ("Esteemsters"?) and "Misery Chick"(?).

Now, if I said that I wanted to ban handguns, would you have asked me?

I agree. Such characters aren't all that common in fiction in general: on television, she's in a class by herself.

Avoiding the "moral minute" trap. (Reference to cartoons in the 80's and early 90's, when threats of governmental interference led to the imposition of a "lesson" upon each episode, often one only tangentially related to the plot. Some old _G. I. Joes_ are hilarious in this respect ... elite commandoes wandering the streets, _in full battle dress_, randomly proffering moral advice is kind of ... weird. _Sailor Moon_ was also, in its first American showings, mutilated in this fashion. (*))

(*) Which was strange, given that _Sailor Moon_ taken STRAIGHT is one of the most moralistic animes ever made.

Yes. Some of the humor takes definite thought to understand.

Same here on the last two episodes; my other two favorites are probably "Road Worriers" and "Pierce Me".

Yeah and IIRC it wasn't just cartoons. This sorta thing uest to piss me off, I personally found it patronising in the extream. Then again I'm one of those who believes that "Tom and Jerry" is in some ways more dangerous than "Beavis & Butthead", at least when B&B did stupid things they got hurt etc, what does T&J teach kids, that you can drop an anvil on people and they'll get up and walk away as if nothing happened....The A Team, I seem to rember also caught some flack for it in this country because no matter what happend how much explosives/weapons fire etc was thrown around nobody *EVER* (that I rember anyways) got killed, the worst I rember was someone ending up with a broken arm.

Indeed.

The Daria & Jane tension episodes are mostly my favorates so "Mysery Chick", though I love Daria's rant to Tommy Sherman :), "See Jane Run", "Jane's Addition", something gives me the feeling I'm gonna like 408-413 when I get to see them :) "Pearce Me" was probably my least favorate ep for ages, I have warmed to it a little now, guess that's the anti-shipper in me.
