Well, we could debate imaginary super-hero fights... like the Tick vs Bananaman, or alternatively, we could invent a Daria RPG... which would of course feature Treant :) One someone could write a Pinky and the Brain/Daria crossover fanfic, and serialise it here over many weeks....
Don't feel stupid about not knowing what an RPG is; lots of people don't.
RPG = Role-Playing Game. The most famous is Dungeons & Dragons (I doubt that very few people have _not_ heard of it, even though they don't know what it means). RPGs come in many flavours, not just Lord-of-the-Rings-vanilla-fantasy.
Daria characters most likely to have played RPGs: Upchuck, at least one or two times, maybe. The New Kid (Ted?), probably for the intellectual challenge. Andrea? Difficult to say. Possibly a Vampire related one.
Downtown featured a somewhat cruel parody in one episode (the sci-fi convention ep).
The best RPG parody I've seen was in Simon the Sorcerer (I think the 2nd part). It was so damn funny, especially because the featured role-players were actually very good role-players in the sense that they never dropped out of the game no matter what happened. And do you know the Knights of the Dinner Table comic strips? They're superb. MSB (who is NOT an active role-player, btw)

there *are* ok-ish blokes out there... even i agree with that. i don't fancy many of those, though, because they're still mostly too bloody *blokey*, even if they are reasonable human beings. ;)
unfortunately most nuggets are taken, because there aren't many and they're valuable, and everyone else is looking for 'em. but there's a few single ones.
Ahem...From this day forward, I claim Matthias S. Benkmann as my muse, and will fight to the death to preserve that claim. (okay, maybe not to the death...maybe to the uncomfortable scratches, but still, it's the thought that counts.)

Something just hit me upside the head like a subsonic brick. We've had a lot of fun here with different titles and awards for the various denizens. How about one that can move around. I propose the, *taadaa*
The ATD Totally Stupid NewsGroup Award
To be awarded to those whose inability to control their fingers reaches new lows in net geekdom, like typing 'hore' instead of 'hope' when refering to dating situations. Comes complete with a virtual ascii dunce cap and a two minute session in front of the Official ATD Shrinking Ray.
Some Rules (feel free to add):
Anyone *trying* to win the award in automatically disqualified.
2) Typos have to add a twisted outlook to the subject being discussed (see above).
3) Really *Really* bad (or good) puns not only win the award, shrinking session, but also a virtual clubbing.
4) Anyone with tempory ownership of the award is not allowed to name someone to pass it along to. Scorn can be heaped upon those who hold the award the longest.
Anything else anyone would care to add?
Someone with more ability than myself could design the dunce cap and maybe a plaque reading,"Hi Stupid!".
Just a waking thought...
"Damn! I'm so stupid! Look at me now. I could sit on the edge of a coin and my feet wouldn't touch the floor!"

And little does she know that the ground she treads to get to her first goal is under the protection of England, who will summarily wipe out the squirrel army, enlisting massive support for their effort by a propaganda campaign to remember the chipmunks in Belgium that were hurt and then umm there's lots of mud and people writing poems with Latin titles and people going insane and stuff.

She was a vegan before it was a fad to be a vegan, and for all the wrong reasons. So, when she was riding third person with us, a typical luchtime conversation went something like this:
"Well, what do want to do for lunch today." "How about some dead, dripping cow flesh." "OK, either that or the roasted musculature of a dismembered chicken." "Good enough." (To the vegan): "How about you? Wendy's or KFC?" "You're just sick!"

Radio 2[1] aired some episodes of the Goon Show a few years ago; I managed to tape some episodes then. They also broadcast an old 50's sci-fi serial, "Journey into Space", which was pretty smart.
It's too bad Radio 5 has become entirely sports related; they used to have some good programmes and serials, like "Night Beat", a 50's serial about an investigative journalist.
I think maybe you must have been playing with an experimental improbability drive in the 1950's and ended up falling through a hole in the space time continuum.

Allow me to explain. Once upon a time there was a show called "Full House." It was about a widower who's brother-in-law and best friend moved in to help him out with his three daughters after his wife died. It was cute at first. Then it started being contrived. Then it started to be annoying. Then it continued beyond all that, and became the mother of all sitcoms that had gone _way_ past it's expiration date and kept walking.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olson played the part of Michelle, who was the baby (having twins is conveniant when dealing with children too young to really know how to act; you can replace one with the other when the one get's fussy). She (they) was barely a toddler when the series began. She (they) was probably seven or eight when the show finally stopped.
But the Olson Twins were now aknowledged child actors. And they began a long series of seriously over-sacherinated child-hero centered movies, all starring them, the Olson Twins. Among some crowds, simply including their names in the credits guarentees someone will watch it, simply because they're "sooo cute." They've probably made more money in six years than I have in my lifetime. And to any who expound on their "acting abilities," I say, "Oh puhhh-leeze." ;)

And, most notably to me, it's set in San Francisco, yet the show's characters manage to avoid even the most incidental contact with the city's large gay and minority populations. It's amazing how these TV shows can get it so wrong. In most of them, S.F. either looks like Vancouver (hmmm...wonder why) or feels like L.A.
Actually, it was cute, contrived and annoying al at once from the very beginning. Then it proceeded to get *more* annoying as the Olsen girls got lame speaking lines of the "Give me a break!" variety, obviously prompted by a money-hungry stage-mother out of camera range.

What can we do to appease the matiarchy so they may possibly find it in themselves to cancel this torture from our airwaves? The matriarchy is beyond evil, following through with this would prove their inhumanity. Okay, never had that. I have had one girl ask me out, and one girl doing the "come talk to my friend she thinks you're hot" routine, but I was paranoid then, instead of oblivious. Both times I figured they weren't being serious, and were just trying to embarass me.
The second time was *true* paranoia, cause they were perfect strangers with no real reason to do that. The first time, though, was at *best* a popular chick trying to help the 'freak' fit in better...
Y'know what, though? I've found it's better to just say, "What the Hell?"and do it anyway. Yeah, you may get embarassed a time or two, but you'll never have those nagging regrets weighing you down. Fear passes, especially when the other person responds positively-- you'll wonder why you were ever such a blockhead in the first place. I know I did and do-- or rather, not anymore. I'm no longer afraid of making a fool of myself, because I realized that it'd be even worse to find out that my soulmate was sitting right next to me, and I was too chickenshit to say "hi" to her, for fear of looking like a fool. Meanwhile, I was sitting there, not talking to her, and she was wondering just what kind of fool would sit next to her and not say anything? I guess I'm saying, "Better to open your mouth and remove all doubt that you are a fool, than to keep your mouth shut and make her wonder if you're a fool." Or something. It's late, and I've been up all night. No, I won't tell you what I've been doing, either-- let's just say it involves making a fool of myself, which I am *quite* good at... or so I've been told.... ;-)

But thanks for trying... I'll add your words to the huge database of similar words I've got in my head, and maybe enough of it will leak through into my 'understanding' compartment.
Yes, but it's even more humiliating to me to know that someone is interested in me, and to be unable to act on it-- she knows I'm a chicken, then. To me, it's a question of "what's more humiliating?" To me, it's more humiliating to not screw up the courage to ask.
Try the good old fashioned method of repetition. There's a theory that if you keep repeating something, eventually you will believe it. What could it hurt?

Ah, but you see, we only _seem_ simple to ourselves because, well, we _are_ ourselves, and we're _not_ someone else. Woman probably think the same way.
Then again, I have heard women speak grumblingly about how simplistic men are, not so refined and complex as themselves. The problem is, most of the women I see end up tangling themselves up in their own complexity, and refuse the help I offer, attempting to explain how simple a situation can really be.
Not that anything's every truely simple with me.

Teenage love sucks. Fortunately, I'm no longer a teenager. :) But, if there's one piece of advice I can give you, it's, at least until your like, a senior or something, go into each relationship with the assumption that it'll end at some point. Doesn't necessarily mean it has to, but it makes it easier to deal with when it does. I mean, how many high school relationships have you observed that lasted any real length of time? Not many.
And doing so enabled me to stay friends, _really_ friends, with my one and only ex. We still get together and talk when we're in the same town, and write e-mail ever now and then when we're not. Her boyfriend is a really cool guy I get along with well, and I can easily see she and her future husband, and me and my future wife, getting gether for bridge, or something, while the kids kick each others asses (at "Super Duper Duper Mario 1024" or "Street Fighter vs. The World" or something) in the other room.
Hmm... I gave advice when someone was merely asking for an ear. Isn't that against some cardinal law of dealing with females? Oh well. My condolences. I mean that. <:-)

When we get an idea in our heads, it is _very_ difficult to remove, no matter how hard we might try. Indeed, all the manuvering and manipulation in the world (standard tatics of the sorts of girls I find my self attracted to) has absolutely no effect, and can sometimes backfire. A straightforward and confident method works much better, because to a guy, anything less implies uncertainty... which, of corse, implies another chance, which, in turn, implies that it isn't over yet, which implies that someday, we will be married, which implies... etc. etc. ad infinitum, ad nausium...
This cycle of utterly moronic thinking (which is rarely revealed by those who experience it) can only be broken by the plainly spoken truth.

The teenage love thing can suck, yea and verily. Of course, the thing I liked about being a Teenager In Love (tm) was the rollercoaster ride... i loved rollercoaster rides. Now, I'm happy with the merry-go-round. I guess it's just my age slowing me down, or maybe it's because I tend to lay all of my cards on the table up front, and avoid all of the bullshit guessing games I used to have to play in HS and College. Only one I'm not happy with...an overly effeminate Nick Rhodes...then again, seeing as though he's my very favorite member, I get overly defensive on his behalf at times....

But, I have seen enough of Jane's Addition to make some comments on all the usual controversials.
Daria and Trent
It ain't over until the fat lady sings, and I didn't see Mrs. Johanson anywhere. ;) They spoke in code, about something each of them _thinks_ they were talking about, _thinks_ the other knew what they were talking about, they _think_ they were both talking about the same thing, but the question is, were they? Yeah, from our point of view, they were, but what about _their_ point of view? I know from experience that "speaking in code" is remarkably unfulfilling, though enjoyable at times. There is always the question, were we talking about the same thing? Did she understand what I meant?
I don't think it's over. I think this dynamic, though changed, will continue to be present well into season five. In fact, I think the fact that they spoke as openly as they did guarentees they wil remain in contact into the future, at least as long as Daria and Jane are hanging out. Sure, they'll never "commit" to each other (at least no time soon), , or even do much together, but the dynamic will remain. Muted, perhaps, by the certain knowlege of it's existance, and knowledge of it's futility, but the dynamic will remain.
Jane and Tom
Tom is here to stay. Maybe not as a *main* character, as frequent an appearance as Daria, Jane, Quinn and her group, but as frequent as Trent, or the tripple J, the Other Morgandorffers, and such. More frequent than, say, Aunt Amy, or Mrs. Johanson.
That scene at the end, with the three of them eating pizza, was one of those pictures that just spoke volumes, like a Norman Rockwell or something. That picture alone was enough to convince me that Tom will be around. And I think it'll probably end up with Daria developing a wider social circle in season 4 (if only spending more time with Jodie and others), and actually getting involved in _activities_ in Season 5, during her senior year (though being frustrated at her every turn). I can easily see her joining the school newspaper, uncovering some indescrepency of Ms. Li's, printing it, getting in trouble, and ending up quitting Journalism on a "question of ethics" (again?).
Looking Ahead
Okay, now for the crazy theories that could never possibly be real. We see a _slight_ crack in the status-quo in the Fashion Club, when Stacy _almost_ ventured an opinion in "Daria Dance Party" (DDD). We already know she considers Quinn her "first best friend," but Quinn is uncomfortable with her. _If_ she ever grows a spine (and I think she just might), it'll make the whole social order go haywire!
After all, it's the control of people like Stacy that the Fashion club thrives on, particularly under Sandy's "administration." If Stacy were to ever become a threat to the status-quo, I have a feeling that Sandy would reject her outright, while Quinn would quietly, but just as surely, edge away from her. Then we'd end up with a three person fashion club, which, for some reason, doesn't seem like it'd work. Combine that with what's now a three person group of outsiders (Daria, Jane, and Tom), and you have an unstable social situation, much like an atom at a higher state of energy than it should be; somehow, it must reach that lower state.
Suppose now that Stacy goes through that experience of absolute alonness for the remainder of Season 4. By season 5, she'll have concluded that either what she _was_ doing doesn't work, or that it really doesn't matter _what_ she does, so she can do what she wants. Through this, I can easily see her getting involved with Jodie and her crew (through clubs) and end up working side by side with Daria and Jane.
Wouldn't Daria be excessivley influenced by past experiences with Stacy, which were extremely annoying? Not necessarily. I myself once knew two girls, one of which was my best friend, the other of which was a good friend, but she didn't like the first. She thought she was "annoying." Actually, the first and I got to know each other when everyone else ditched her and I didn't have the heart to. We became good friends. And, by my senior year, she was also a good friend of the second. Indeed, those two would "torment" me with their "conspiracies," plotting to find some way to embarras me, or throw me off balence, or whatever... it was all great fun. :) But that's the thing. Two who at one time could never have got along together at an earlier time (my sophomore year, or in D terms, 2nd, even 3rd season) were fast friends by 5th season. :)

Maybe they'd take on a community service project to make Brooke an acceptable yes-girl, a position she seems eager to occupy ("Too Cute"), or someone like that...
The problem is, we don't really know Stacy, and what she would do if she didn't do what she does now, which is be a total conformist out of the need of acceptance. If she were to redefine herself, we'd need to know on what terms. Maybe she has some hidden skills or maybe she'd just develop a stronger, more interesting personality based on her experience. Or maybe she'd just feel so bad that she'd crawl back to the Fashion Club as the official soda-fetcher or whatever.

Exactly. We need a Trent-Stacy plotline to see Stacy out the Fashion Club context, as she'll never totally join the Daria-Jane clique anyway. Then maybe we could find out who she actually is, and ditto Trent, who is also fairly rarely seen outside a shipper context...

This is true. We don't actually know her. What we do know is this:
1. She's basically a nice girl (unlike the rest of the fashion club).
2. She is currently pathetically dependent on social acceptance, to a
debilitating degree.
3. She prefers Quinn to Sandi (and Quinn seems to be the more
reasonable of the two; draw your own conclusions).
4. She is _very_ emotional, or maybe this relates to point 2.
5. She's not stupid.
Conclusion 5 I draw from the following sources. First of all, she was apparently smart enough to warrent Quinn looking on her paper during an English test (was that English? I don't remember.), and we know that Quinn isn't a _total_ ditz, just unprepared (and uncaring about her academic performance). Her mistake on a report, also in English, was to simply identify the wrong Hemmingway (personally, I'd never even _heard_ of Murial Hemmingway (sp?) before that ep). Other than that, we know little of her school performance.

In an attempt to provocate I put shameless promos for said pictures in several of my messages that followed, yet got practically no reaction. Maybe this group is not so tolerant as we want to think it is and people are afraid of posting their opinions on this subject (I ain't, that's for sure, I got my asbestos jacket right here :-). Or maybe you just didn't think I'd really do it (I am a very big fan of the show, after all, and wouldn't defile it). But if I really put my mind to something, nothing is going to stop me (this is probably a good spot for mentioning that D-tag isn't dead, yet). Anyways, I announced that the pics would be ready by end of October and <crescendo> they were. One of Daria and one of Trent. It goes without saying that I am proud to publish those pictures not under a pseudonym but under my real name (which is John Smith, btw :-) Both pictures have stories attached and I would go so far to say that both stories would fit in with the show better than "Depth takes...". I am currently designing a website (using Amaya, btw) to host those pictures (will take me a while) together with (non-erotic) Daria fan art, other pictures and comic strips I've done and some pictures by famous artists (I got a nice one of Mikey's "Dave" (sic)).
Ok, returning to wicka_chick's request for discussion. What are your opinions on the following question: Is erotic fan art always evil? (of course I will ask the same question again after publishing my pics to see if I've changed sb.'s mind). MSB
p.s.: If you're wondering just how much those pictures show, well, let me put it this way: If you don't know the difference between boys and girls, yet, looking at those pictures is mandatory for you but if you want to know what this 3-letter word means that everyone seems to be talking about, you'll have to wait for my upcoming project "Daria, Trent and the miracle of life". I can only give you a short sneak preview here:
Daria - Mom, do you remember that talk you gave me about the risks of unprotected sex?
Helen - What? We never talked about that.
Daria - Oh, that explains it.
Helen - WHAT?
Daria - Nothing. (walks to the door, then stops and turns around). By the way, do you think "Cyn" would be a good name for a girl?
Helen - (faints)
p.p.s.: Of course the above is just a joke. It would be too unrealistic. The real project is called "Jane, Tom and the miracle of life".
p.p.p.s.: Of course that was a joke, too. I would never use "You wanna check out my 'car' ?" Tom and "I don't know you but, hey, let's go!" Jane for a sex education piece. They're both extremely bad role models for kids.
