I've always suspected it, but this Boston Herald article clinched it:
"E! Entertainment Television, TBS and MTV ranked among the most cluttered cable networkds last year, all with a little more than 18 minutes of ad time during an average hour."
This is most likely the cause of the opening theme editing. Sucks, don't it?
Ah, it almost makes me feel privileged to have seen Daria on c5, where there were no ads during an episode, only before and after.
IIRC the UK's commercial TV stations aren't allowed to screen ads during children's programmes: and c5 screened Daria in a children's slot (editing content, others have pointed out).
The Herald article specified cable networks: are there even more ads on US free-to-air commercial stations? The mind boggles....
Actually 18 may not be as bad as it sounds, I think ITV in the UK has ad breaks lasting 3:45 every 15 minutes, which adds up to 15 mins an hour. I don't think this is sustained all day though, there are fewer during childrens programming as Martin noted. And it is a free station. If I were paying to see a tv station (as we do with the BBC through the licence fee) I'd hope there wouldn't be any ads at all.
In the U.S., it's more like four-minute breaks every eight minutes. Of five-minute breaks if you're talking about MTV. That's one thing I like about Cartoon Network, there are fewer commercial breaks...shown about 15 minutes apart. Sure, they're longer, but there are a lot of in-house promos...making for less actual advertising. I wonder if they'd ever pick up "Daria". Probably not, they have some good shows, but the only thing remotely like "Daria" that they show on a regular basis is "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home", which is pretty awful, actually.

You have to remember, MTV *OWNS* Daria. You may eventualy see it on Nick, USA Network, or whatever else their parent company owns, but it'll be a looong time till it's sold to a rival network. Besides, CN likes to air shows it owns as well.
