"I Don't"

Anyone else notice that in "I Don't," "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion is no longer at the end of the episode? Now it's some other tune.

It never was. "Wishin' & Hopin'" has always been the closing song. The cover by Ani DiFranco was originally used, but subsequent reruns have used the original (by Dusty Springfield, I do believe), due possibly to clearance problems.

You mean the finale, after the smoke and carnage has finally cleared, but just before the credits? Yeah, I've got the original airing on tape somewhere and I was very surprised to hear something else playing when it next aired. (For those who missed it, it's just that instrumental part. No screaming or anything. That was all contained in the previous scenes.:)

Does this hint at copyright problems?

I do recall there being two different versions of "Wishin' and Hopin'" (I think I posted a mesaage about it the first time they repeated that episode).

I don't recall ever hearing Celine Dion on any "Daria" episode.

I prefer the Ani DiFranco version myself. I got that version when I taped Daria. They used that version on the title sequence of "My Best Friend's Wedding" so I recognized it. It's brighter and perkier.

"Now I understand, I understand everything." I just discovered the meaning of a reference in "I Don't." When the Windsor Hills Resort comes into view as the Morgendorffers approach, Daria holds up a finger and says "Red Rum! Red Rum!" I've searched many of the fan web sites and anyplace else I could think of but could never find the meaning of this reference. I guess everyone assumes everyone else knows. I finally discovered the missing piece of the puzzle--in the newspaper. An article about a woman who named her horse Red Rum and put up a sign that upset the neighbors when they saw it in their rear-view mirrors of their cars. The reference is to the movie "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson. Apparently the word is printed on a wall or something and he sees the reversed reflection in a mirror--"Murder." Am I right? I haven't seen "The Shining" so I guess that's the reason I never made the connection. I usually avoid Steven King stories. Murder in a resort. Yeah, that's the kind of connection Daria would make.

You're exactly right. I think that Daria's saying "Redrum! Redrum!" was due to the fact that Windsor Hills had an uncanny resemblance to the Overlook Hotel from the movie. All the place needed was ten foot snowdrifts and a huge hedge maze/labyrinth to complete the picture. :-)
