I like the new alter-egos, Daria as cheerleader for instance, though they're all good. Trent as Daria is odd.

The first episode was kind of convoluted but it was good to get back to more angsty animation than the Powerpuff Girls.

Good to see that C5 haven't changed their ads policy - still no commercials at all during Daria, unlike ITV which have started putting ad breaks in every 11 minutes during afternoon TV -- this is apparently due to the ITC* which recently sold us viewers down the river for No Good Reason. (I note that in Pok�mon, the "who's that Pok�mon" bit in the middle has been axed to make time for the long ad break.) I think I sense the long awaited Death of quality television arriving at last.....

Daria's most admirable trait is that she chooses to not conform. She doesn't take the path of least resistance.

that doesn't mean she's not like other girls, though, does it? it just means she doesn't go out of her way to be like them.

That's the question, then: Does it take a conscious effort to be like others, or to NOT be like others?

Is Daria an outsider because she sees how much work (and how much sacrifice) her sister puts into being popular and decided, "the hell with THAT"? Many would say that being different in high school is the harder path to follow, irregardless. But maybe the question can't be boiled down to something that simple. So let's keep it manageable by limiting our discussion to Daria and her circumstances.

I think Daria has an easier time resisting the lure of superficial high school life because she recognized it for what it is from the start and chose not to participate. That makes it easier for her to do it now than it might have been (easier than it will be for Quinn, too, which is why she will have lapses, which will help from a storytelling point-of-view). But it doesn't make it any less praiseworthy, in my opinion.

One of Daria's faults is that sometimes she DOES make a conscious effort to be unlike others as a principle in itself. "Through a Lens Darkly" was a whole episode devoted to this idea.

Given that she goes to Lawndale High, I question if this is actually a "fault". But it's hard to defend that opinion against the "Lens" episode example. Point to you, MMan.

Most teenagers, when making any decision, at least factor in this question: "What will other teenagers think?" Daria, in that same position, if she asks or was asked, would respond: "who cares what they think?"

But when she considered, for whatever reason, getting contact lenses, she demonstrated she was a teenager (read:only human) by wondering how others will react to it. This is prompted by the fact that to HER, this was a big deal. (Of course, it wasn't nearly as much of an issue to anyone else.)

If Daria had called me instead of Amy, I would have said, "Daria, all your life you've said 'who cares what they think?' I say, if you want the contacts, get the damn' contacts. If you want to get them to improve your driving, get them to improve your driving. If you want to get them to improve your looks, get them to improve your looks. Other people might think you've become vain. They might think you're opening up, dropping that stand-offish persona, revealing the you-ness inside, what-have-you. Other people might draw all sorts of conclusions, and those conclusions might be right or they might be wrong. And the question you should ask yourself in either case is: 'who cares what they think?'"

They usually seem to do this when they're pimping the 'book that accompanies the series'. Or in the case of science programs like Equinox or Horizon, it's the booklet that tells you more about the topic covered in the programme.

(Incidentally they don't, they're a waste of money)
