A fun show. Daria and Quinn working as a team! Daria driving! Daria reads Trent's songbook, then lies to him about it! (Or would this be just a fib?) Of course, picking up the hitchhiker who then took their money is straight outta Brad Pitt in "Thelma and Louise."

Speaking of family members watching, my mom is staying with me for a while. I told her I had to watch the show at 10 pm since my other TV is taping "Oz" on HBO. I figured she'd experience the joy of "Daria" but, naturally, she fell asleep before the show even started. :-)

Well, not wanting to delve into the thread-bloating monster that is the whole Daria/Trent thing, but wanting to comment on it anyway, all I have to say is that maybe it's a Good Thing that she saw a little of Trent's songbook. Lowers that unrealistic pedastal a bit. ;-)

<snip>

All in all, though, a great ep. I especially loved Max-- "We're criminales!" So many great lines and subplots... it's like a smorgasbord of comedy fun. <g> Sam and Chris really hit one out of the park. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and you know what? It made me think, too.

<can of worms> (Especially about this-- if Lawndale is supposed to be somewhere near Maryland, then what were they doing in West Texas?) </can of worms>

I'm sure many of you will mention other great little bits about the ep. In order to save bandwidth, I'll just say "Me too!" now. ;-)

One thing we see is an unexpected act of revenge by Daria. Usually she just accepts whatever comes her way, letting loose only a sarcastic remark in retaliation. Now we see her exhibit her frustration by running over a suitcase! Marvelous! I love this woman! There IS a passionate soul inside that dour exterior. (Was there ever any doubt? Just don't try and pull something like that with me, although I'd hope never to give cause.) Shows how people will do things from the anonymity of a driver's seat that they'd never do face to face.

Overall (though I dislike ranking the Daria episodes because they're all wonderful) I'd call this one one of the best. I've often observed that if you really want to know someone, try traveling with them. We've learned a lot about Daria and her sister. Daria and Quinn are moving out of the sibling rivalry stage and into a more mature sisterhood. I suppose anyone who isn't an only child will have to reach this stage sooner or later. I'm glad it's finally happening for Daria and Quinn.

How smart is Trent?, "You didn't believe any of that did you?" "Hey! He was THERE man!" In case anyone was still wondering, I suspect Trent probably is worthy of Daria. And that probably WAS just a first draft.

I thought it was interesting that they didn't allow the episode to degenerate into cop-bashing, though they tried to repeatedly tease the viewer into thinking that was how it was going to go. I'll note that many jurisdictions now accept major credit cards so there's no need to wait for someone to arrive with cash. Or go to Western Union and pay their shocking fees.

I wonder how Jake and Helen will react to the unscheduled road trip. Considering how it turned out, I'd think they ought to be glad rather than a ngry. The girls were able to get along, perform a non-trivial mission, and return without any injuries or property damage.

I'm sure there will be plenty of regressions before they reach that stage permanently.

You're making a huge assumption: that they'd find out about it.

Don't we all :)

Yep.

Yes. And did you notice ... Quinn did a mature thing by telling Daria what really happened to the money. Good for her.

Actually a lot of things were revealed about Quinn's character this episode, one of them that she really IS terribly reckless. The "what do you think people DO on dates anyway" was a terrific running gag, and reveals a lot about what Quinn probably does on dates (drive around and go to clubs she shouldn't really be allowed into).

Trent is clearly smarter than his three fellow "criminales" (as Max might put it).

I think he shows promise. :)

Well, maybe Trent needs someone highly skilled at writing composition to spend long hours with him working to improve the lyrics? <hint, hint>

I cracked up when Jane started asking the arresting officer to be more fierce and Max started freaking out. This was especially funny in light of Max's earlier comment about how "bad" he was.

Heh, wonder how much if anything Daria and Quinn will tell about their expedition. This may wind up being their little secret ...

LOL...I thought the issue had been settled that Lawndale was a Virginia D.C. suburb...or something. It's been a long while since that thread came around. At any case, in Virginia there are still cowpokes around. So that would explain the cowboys and deep drawls. I know that West Texas is one of the most "accent"-free (when "accent" is referring to the so-called "Texas" drawl) areas in the state...usually if you run across a Texan with a drawl he or she is from either the Panhandle or the northeast corner of the state (Dallas/Ft Worth area, that sort of thing). Besides, it takes nearly forever for one to travel around the state...so a simple three hour drive would not suffice if one were to, oh say, drive from the Houston area to West Texas. Three hours would get you as far as Hondo (which is between Austin and San Antonio), but it's (a.) not that desloate, (b.) not that "hick"-ish, and (c.) just too cosmopolitan for that to be a sufficient enough location.

I think Lawndale's still in VA, guys. I mean, if you *had* to pin it down to one location in the US.

Actually, that's very true. I live in West Texas, and not all of the "Cowboys" look like that. Actually, NONE of them look like that unless they are going to a club, Halloween, ect. They really don't have accents around here. I moved here a few years ago from the east coast and it's amazing how much it really is like the east coast-except for traffic, stuff to do, interesting people, good bookstores, an actual mall...the list goes on!

Very true. Especially since it takes 6 hours to get to San Antonio from Abilene and it takes 4 1/2 hours to get to McAllen (on the Mexican border) from San Antonio.

Yep. I've visited there a few times stopping on vacation. There really ISN'T bars like they had on "Speedtrapped" out here. If there was, my high school classmates would have found it.

I agree, Diane!

Just the regular Midwestern-esque non-accent, or if they're like me, sounding like a Californian. (c.) West Texas, like the East Coast? Really? I mean, except for the differences (of course), which would include the aridness of the West Texas climate, no?

No kidding. The 12 hour drive thing was quoted directly from a source who knows -- my Dad. He used to make driving trips to the El Paso area a lot and he told me it took him 12 hours to get from San Antonio to El Paso. And, Brits here on this ng, you should know that the state of Texas is three times as big as the whole of England. "You see, everything really *is* bigger in Texas"...LOL.

LOL. Of course there are going to be bars, but they're more along the lines of the typical bar...nothing cowpokey about them. Except if they happen to have country music in the jukebox, which they're oft to do because tourists are a silly bunch who like to think themselves country bumpkins just because they're in a bar in Texas (and of course they usually go all the way out with the cowboy hat, tight Stetsons, cowboy shirt, large belt buckle, etc.).

Yay! Someone agrees! (Then again, were you one of the people to first hypothesize this? I know I didn't have a clue until I read this same sort of discussion on the ng a few months back, where a number of people successfully proved that Lawndale would be in VA -- the "Washington D.C. suburb" people. Actually, yes, they do. Tommy Hilfiger mostly.

Or they sound like me with a Connecticut-Pennsylvania accent. The ones with the accents are usually fake. Take my aunt. She sounds normal when you talk to her but once someone comes in from out of state she's all "Well come here puddin pie! Welcome to Texas Ya'll! Yee-haw!" So that goes to show that most Texas drawl accents are phony.

Well...it's not as humid, but other than that...no it really is the same. Though up there I always tanned and out here I burn up like a tomato.

Yeah, and they look and act pretty stupid doing it, too .

Why would your aunt want to do something like that? I for one think that the whole Texas drawl thing sounds stupid, uneducated, and antiquated. Connecticuit-Pennsylvania? That must be interesting. I know at work I've taken lots of orders from people in PA and they seem to me to have more of an accent than Texans do. As for CT...some of them sound like what I would consider a New Yorker to sound. So your accent must be interesting.

Oh, you're lucky -- you can tan. I have weird colored skin...my arms and face are darker than the rest of me...and the whole of me has a hard time getting tanned...like, I spent one afternoon completely out in the blazing sun and at the end of the day my legs were still a pasty white color. Well, not exactly pasty, but they still were gleaming. LOL

Amen. But they're tourists, they don't understand.

(note to all a.t.d. readers -- if you plan on visiting Texas, do *not*, I mean do *not* buy a tight pair of Stetsons, a cowboy shirt, a belt with a large belt buckle, and a cowboy hat, just so you can saunter on down to a bar and pretend to be "Texan". You will get your sweet little patootie laughed out of the establishment, and even if that didn't happen we'd still know you as a tourist and thusly will treat you quite uncivil-like. Just stick to what you normally wear, you know, average daily stuff, and you'll be fine.)

Come to think of it, I meant Panhandle when I said West Texas. Considering my parents live in Dallas, everything west of it is West Texas in my mind. Baseball cap and jeans? What kind of cowboys do you have over there? We're dealing with a cartoon, and sterotypes are the order of the day. Wide brimmed hats, Wrangler jeans, and country music are the identifiers of the stereotypical cowboy.

As to that no accent thing, I have to disagree. _Everyone_ has an accent, except me, of corse. I talk normal, everyone else has accents. ;) Seriously, though, I discovered recently that there actually is such a thing as "Fresno" accent, which my brother discovered due to the incredible variety of accents among his friends.

And I think this episode finally proves that TDH was right; Lawndale exists no where outside our TV. So far, they have a southern mansion, a colonial college, hurricanes, deserts and canyon lands, cowboys, and probably every other stereotype in the whole of the US, not to mention a gateway to Holiday Island behind that one Chinese resteraunt, all within driving distance. This produces an irreconcilable geographic picture.

Ugh...I went to a little hick school out in the middle of a cow pasture. Everyone there listened to country music, was involved in FFA (Future Farmers of America), and talked with "Fayke Suthern Aykseynts". It was horrible. 'Specially since I was the only one who listened to rock music, loathed livestock, and rarely spoke at all. I can't believe the school allowed agricultural classes to count as a science course. My parrot doesn't bite me because he worships the ground I walk on. Although he does attack anyone else who gets too close to him. At the store in which I worked--the place where I bought him--several moronic younger male employees called him "Devil-Bird." (And to tell you the truth, he doesn't attack EVERYONE. He and Joel (my boyfriend) have been getting along reasonably well of late. But every once and awhile, Blue (the bird) will take a swipe at him just out of general principles.)

As for water, well, Blue loves to get soaking wet. So water as a behavior deterrent is not exactly the best idea. And of course, punishment of a physical nature (even very light water squirting) is almost never the best way to go for altering parrot behavior. But I doubt anyone wants to hear me go into Parrot Psychologist mode here. ;-)

Blue's an Orange-winged Amazon. Not much blue on him, but he came with the name so I couldn't very well change it. :-)

While squirting water and so on may work in the short term, it's not the best long term solution for stopping unwanted behavior. To do that you have to first understand *why* the bird is screaming (or biting, or chewing on stuff, or feather plucking.. the list goes on). Also, when you're trying to change what a parrot does, it is best not to think of it as disciplining. That almost NEVER works. You have to modify their behavior.

You see, parrots are not domesticated. Despite what anyone may tell you, they are still very wild creatures. Even if they have been bred and raised in captivity they will retain much of their wild instinct. What people have to do as responsible parrot owners is make sure we try to *modify* and accommodate their wild instincts while still making life bearable for the humans of the house. :-)

Parrots have the added bonus of being very intelligent. Amazons are ranked... third, I believe, on the parrot intelligence scale (coming in behind African Greys and Cockatoos). That means these birds have a brain capable of thought similar to a human toddler. Recent research by cognitive scientist Dr. Irene Pepperberg on her Grey Alex has shown those particular birds to be on par with a four year old. (Example: Alex knows colors, words for objects, how to ask for specific food items he wants, and so on. During a trip to the vet's office, where he was going to undergo surgery, Alex cried as he was being carried off by the vet "Wait! I'm sorry! I love you! Come back!!" to Dr. Pepperberg.)

So, what do you get when you cross a wild, dinosaur descended feathered thing with the brain of a three year old and the emotional development of a two year old? You guessed it... a very hard to accommodate parrot. :-D

Now we're getting into behavior problems, including screaming. In the wild, parrots shriek for several reasons. First, is if they are in danger or frightened and want to warn the rest of the flock. Second, is if they become separated from the flock, and need to communicate with them. Or, if they just want to say "YO!" to another flock member on the other side of the tree. Third, is for the pure unadulterated joy of it. Parrots are hams and love to hear their own voices. And there is also a fourth reason, which only occurs in captivity. Parrots will often shriek simply because they're bored.

Most likely, Mort is either primarily a boredom screamer, a joy screamer, or a separation anxiety screamer. Any way, it still hurts the eardrums. So the big question is what to do about it. First off you must determine which one--or ones--of the three he is.

Does he only scream when His Person (i.e., your dad) isn't around? That's obviously a separation scream. One way to fix that is to try to talk to him and calm him down. While he does hate the rest of your family (or so it seems), that's not really true. You're all members of his flock. You're just lower down on the totem pole than he, at least in his eyes. He may like you, but he has no respect whatsoever for your authority. Still-- you may be able to soothe his screams just by talking quietly to him. Or, you can call to him from another room to let him know you're safe, he's safe, and all is right. Just a quick, "Hello, Mort!" Of course neither of these are quick fixes, but rather more long term ones. It takes considerable patience to calm a screaming parrot. Another possibility is turn on a TV for him to watch, or put him near a window so he has something to do.

That leads into the boredom scream. Besides giving him TV/music/a view, you can also make sure he has enough time out of his cage during the day. While he's in his cage, he needs lots of varied sized perches to sit on, and new toys every once and awhile. One good thing to do is have a rotating stock of toys and chewies you can put in his cage on different days.

Or does he tend to scream at certain parts of the day? Many birds like to greet the rising and setting of the sun with mighty words of praise. To tell you the truth, there isn't a whole lot you can do about this. :-/ That's kind of a Parrot Thing. However, one trick I use on my bird to keep him from screaming at inappropriate times, is to let him scream at certain specific scheduled times. He and I will have screaming sessions together, outside if possible, each evening. That way we can do a bit of bonding and let him have his voice time all at once.

And in all cases, if you ever do manage to get Mort to shush up by using a positive behavior modification method, be sure to have an Extra Special Favorite Food on hand.

And of course, your mileage may vary. There are so many specifics and outside influences that it's hard to give a completely accurate diagnosis without knowing a lot more about the situation. I HIGHLY recommend the book "Guide To A Well Behaved Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan. It's very easy to understand and has many amusing anecdotes. Also, it is one of the very, very few books I can confidently recommend about parrot behavior. This is such as new area that most books are hopelessly outdated.

Geez... I really went off, didn't I. Heh heh.

And of course he's getting 10-11 hours of sleep each night? That's so very important, and few parrot owners realize it. :->

Okay, okay, I'll shut up now. ;-)

Reminds me of my sister's Quaker Parrakeet-- he starts squawking right about 10PM every night-- that's when he has to become "night-night bird." So, they put him in his cage, in his own room, and make sure he's covered. (Or else he'll really have a hissy fit. <g>) And if he isn't uncovered by about 8-9AM, he'll raise a ruckus as well.

And if you must know, his name is Squird. Mostly because he just likes to squawk every now and then. Especially when he sees a cat or a hawk outside his window. ;-) (Can you blame him?)

Hey, that sounds just like an old cat of ours. You could be walking down the hall, minding your own business, and all of a sudden this funny lookin' furball would affix itself to your leg using its two front paws. She's just hang like that from you and let herself be dragged all over the place.

Damn weirdo cat anyway... ;-)

This cat actively climbs your pant leg. Then when he's done with that he climbs your shirt. Then he's way too close to your face for something that hasn't been declawed yet, so you put him down, so he climbs up your pant leg... :-O

Heh heh, cats can be very perceptive. When I was in high school, there was this girl I was completely in love with. She would toy with people, though. My intellegence suggested I run away, but, of corse, I couldn't.

This is precisely what my cat did the first time he saw her. ;) It was hilarious. He looked at her, got this look like he was looking at a dog, and ran off like there were twenty dogs chasing him! All I could so was say, "Smart cat." ;)

And modern agriculture is loaded with scientific concepts. The biology and behaviour of insects. The precise workings of plants, beaten only by the field of botany. Economic and business issues. I'd assume theres some basic meteorology in there somewhere, as well. Chemistry for pesticides and fertilizers. There's a great deal more to agriculture today then there was in the twelfth century.

Agriculture has ALWAYS been a scientific endeavor. Anyone thinks it's easy just try planting a backyard garden. In fact it might be reasonably argued that the technology involved in getting food to pop out of the ground ultimately developed into technology that put a man on the moon. That's the problem I have with this "Third Wave," information technology revolution stuff. All our technology has always been connected by a triad of agriculture, industry, and information. It has always been that way, it always will. Each of these fields serves the other two and each field would be helpless without the other two. There is never going to come a time when we can abandon our farms, scrap our factories and spend all our time getting everything out of a computer. It just isn't going to happen.
