I actually prefer the supermarket own brand versions that are just labelled "Yeast extract", genuine Marmite has a bit much bite, perhaps there's more salt in it or something.

It occurred to me recently that maybe the reason Americans don't have Marmite is because it's a by-product of beer production, and the big American breweries produce lager rather than ales, so they probably don't produce the malty yeast sludge that we turn into marmite. US micro-breweries could perhaps start a sideline in making marmite though.

Not to mention in Fish & Chips (along with fish, which is also quite important), crisps, and jacket potatoes. Mash is nice too, also boiled potatoes with butter, fried potatoes, and of course they're great for making those stamps with, you know, where you cut a potato in half and carve a design on the flat bit and dip it in paint and stamp it on every bit of paper you can find. (There are also Mr. Potato men, but I've always been frightened of those.)

Where you guys seem to fry the living heck out of them, along with the fish too, which I agree is quite important in "fish & chips". (gets shivers down spine) Sorry...bad memories of eating fish & chips in England and staying up half the night because of heartburn induced by excess greasiness. *g* As my boyfriend said when I told him this, "Welcome to England".

Oh, now those two are nice. I got addicted to this one snack I loved...Walker's regular crisps and a can of Tropical Rio Light. And I will admit, one of the nicest meals I've ever had was a jacket potato (plain) and some roasted chicken I picked up at an area grocery. Was GOOD.

Mash is nice too, also boiled

Lemme guess...you're the Bubba of potatoes, right? :)

(Bubba as in the character in "Forrest Gump" who discussed all the many ways you could cook shrimp. Shrimp cole slaw, shrimp gumbo, shrimp salad, shrimp scampi, shrimp stir-fry, boiled shrimp, steamed shrimp, fried shrimp....)

deena lissa he said other ways too, but I forgot them

It's a special technique called deep frying, basically you immerse them in boiling oil, it's an old medieval torture technique I think (but as potatoes have no central nervous system and the fish are dead it entails no suffering).

You need to shop around for a good chip shop though, some produce disgusting soggy stuff, others do it right and produce crisp-skinned chips that aren't excessively greasy. I have two local chip shops, and one produces nice chips, the other makes ones so limp and yucky that I threw them away the last time bought some. There's a skill to it, I think you have to have the oil really hot and add the chips in small quantities so the surface is sealed instantly, which stops the fat getting into the chip. If you add a lot of chips at once, the oil temperature drops and the surface of the chip doesn't get instantly hardened, resulting in a soggy fat-saturated chip. Also I think only certain varieties of potatoes make good chips. (Weren't the Incas wonderful? They invented potatoes, tomatoes, maize and cocoa, the world's four most important staples, which gave us chips, tomato sauce, breakfast cereals and chocolate.)

Good job you mentioned that as I wouldn't have known. Forrest Gump was not a cultural icon thing over here, in fact the critics roundly panned it, and the Fast Show parodied it with a trailer for a film called "Cute Disabled Man" which had dialogue like CDM: "I loove you, token black person." TBP: "And I loove you too, cute disabled man." Forrest Gump was shown on TV here a couple of days ago, but I didn't bother watching it.

I always remember a brilliant sketches on Spitting Image about (then Prime Minister) John Major and the conversations he had with his wife over dinner: John Major: I love peas, they're so versatile! You can boil them, ... er ... . Anyway I love peas, I would say they're my favourite vegetable.

I could never stand fish, especially fish as in "fish and chips." Reminds me of this girl I had to sit behind in form one year - greasy, fatty and smelly...

What? You *cannot* be serious! <g>

I agree there is a huge variety in quality, ranging from mouthwatering to virtually inedible.

Fish & chips here in Grimsby is often fantastic: so much so, that having got used to it here, I never have fish & chips inland (pie & chips instead, inland). The fish I had today in Leicestershire would have led to a riot if it had been served here! <g>

The difference, of course, is that Grimsby is a fishing town (albeit that the fishing fleet's a shadow of what once it was). Not only is the fish landed here this morning fried tonight, but also there is no tolerance for poorly cooked fish.

When eventually I get posted somewhere else I'll probably spend ages in a futile search for a chippy that can match what I'm now used to. <sigh>

Probably <LOL>... I can't stand fish, and I'm a vegetarian anyway so that doesn't affect me <g>, and chips are all fatty and greasy and horrible. :P

One of my fellow engineers once observed that fat doesn't have much flavor, but it has a nearly infinite capacity to contain other flavors. Fat, the other white meat.

And I spent a good deal of an evening spraying window cleaner on them. I hope no one was eating them, we were using them for crafts... aaah well, I got paid six bucks an hour, I was jobless at the time (as I am now). Three days at the ultimate display of capitalism, the Meijer food fair.

When you're a sorry subhuman misfit with nothing of any substance to be proud of, doesn't it make sense to build and defend a fort in the woods and champion for how little pigmentation you have? What's loony about that? ;-)
