Mr. DeMartino (#503)

So I'm posting as I watch...looks like the summer was for naught. Mr. D is right back to where he was. Maybe even worse, calling the students imbecilic morons. Perhaps he should teach elementary school. He seemed to do better with younger kids.

That's because elementary kids want to learn. By high school, the typical teenager already knows everything. So you can't teach them anything.

Get mad if you want to, but I was a 'typical teenager' at one time too so I know what I'm talking about.

This is why I like Daria AND DeMartino. They know that there is more to life than the myopic, shallow, P.O.V. that everyone around them seem to adhere to.

In this case this includes the sold-out, distant, parents, the shallow, self-absorbed beautiful people, the in-another-parallel-universe-dwelling faculty, or the hormononally addled, image conscious students they are forced to interact with

Daria nor DeMartino are scared of learning, and they wear that courage as armour, shield, and sword.

Maybe if his/her peers realized that fact, they'd have an easier time of it, and high school wouldn't be such a living hell for Daria OR Mr DeMartino.

But probably not as entertaining...

We're talking about the love of learning and about 99% of the world could give a damn!

Daria could be DeMartino in 20 years.

Now that's scary...

The trouble is that DeMartino doesn't let himself appreciate the few diamonds in the rough.

Remember in Esteemsters when he barked at Daria to "stop showing off"? Daria went home and reported that "my history teacher hates me because I know all the answers".

The only time he really seemed to appreciate a student was Quinn at the end of IIFY.

Well, yes, but in a very, uh, indirect way. Here's the conversation copied from the episode transcript on Outpost Daria:

Mr. DeMartino - Daria, take my chips.

Daria - Excuse me?

Mr. DeMartino - You know, as a thank you for making me want to kill myself a little less than the processed sausages who call themselves your classmates.

Jane - You're not one of those "young people are our greatest hope" guys, are you?

Daria - Thanks, Mr. DeMartino, but I can't. I've already reached my fun quota.

Mr. DeMartino - Well, then, you take them, Jane. For being so...

Jane - Yes?

Mr. DeMartino - Angular.

It's clear he does appreciate Daria (and Jane), but he can't bring himself to come out and say it, as he does with Quinn in IIFY

I think most kids go through a similar cycle of views on the world. When you're young you are idealistic and believe you can change the world, the system works, and you are part of something. You are democractic.

Then you graduate, start working, and don't like taxes, and become more conservative. Later if life you are fed up with the right wing views and may sway back to left views or go independent.

I have seen myself go from quasi commi to crossing registered party-lines to go GOP now.

I loved when Mr. D was complimenting Daria on her essay "Mind Control Deprogramming: My babysitting experience at the Gupty's. "Ahhh...Daria! A! Very good Daria ALTHOUGH I believe it would be considered a FELONY in most states!"
