Scary how much is in the genes. Referenced directly in Daria! of course, but more interesting where their approach is subtler, like in Lane Miserables. pm: Daria has nightmarish vision of Trent waxing ever fatter, balder and more sofa-bound. following am: Helen gives Trent a no-holds-barred pep talk about joining the real world. Of course, had Daria met Daddy Lane she might have had a different vision - though possibly equally scary!

Ideas for what it might have been?

Any hoo, to get to the main point: Daria (and to the same degree, Simpsons and King Of The Hill) all show family resemblences (or lack of in the case of Dale's boy!) very clearly and obviously - much as they show up in real life - and can build whole episodes around them. You just can't do this with live-action unless you're lucky enough to have cast relatives (e.g. the McGann brothers in the UK... Shirley Mac and Warren B in the US) and even then it looks artificial because no-one *else* in the show looks or acts like *their* "relatives".

In animated series you can even get the same people to do the voices.

I think we're really just starting out with animation - it's getting cheaper and cheaper every year. Right now we're at a stage akin to where cinema took over from theatre and hadn't quite worked out what this really meant. Anime illustrates this pretty well but is still not mainstream....

You can do that in live action too, a lot of the dialogue is often dubbed in afterwards so there's no reason not to use someone else's voice. I once watched an Australian TV series and discovered one day that one of the lead characters' voices was done by another actress. I couldn't tell from watching the show, it's just that there were two entries in the credits - "Dovis" and "Voice of Dovis". I assumed at the time that she must be dumb, but it could have been simply that her voice didn't fit the rest of the family's - maybe she had a different accent or something.

There was another Australian show, this time about a dumb girl, which did the same thing in that the voiceover of her thoughts was done by another actress (obviously much easier this time as no lip sync required!). I assume this was because the dumb girl was played by a dumb actress, but again that's not necessarily the case.

I agree that animation is looking like being the successor to live action movies though. Already nearly all major action films are in large part animations, it's just that no-one seems to call it that, they just talk about "computer generated special effects" or whatever. Has anyone read "American Flagg!", where a porn star, Reuben Flagg, is reduced to becoming a policeman because he's replaced by an animated version of himself in the movies? I expect that will probably happen at some point, at which we can expect major "look and feel" legal battles over who owns the right to depict an actor's persona.

That's the direction George Lucas is going in. Of course his animated people don't look like anyone else, but they might still replace 'flesh' actors.

I watched the whole series on Sky 1, and found it to be very well written for what is essentially a "kids cartoon" (and that's with the dub). By that I mean it was highly watchable, unlike a lot of other cartoon shows out there.

Pok�Mon is currently being touted as "The Next Big Thing"*, and like a lot of over-hyped stuff, this is driving some people into a frenzy, and others away. Can you imagine what you'd do if Daria was being hyped as much as Pok�Mon? Would you be a Daria-maniac, or would you be saying "It used to be good before it became so commercialised..."?

Yeah, I've poked around there several times. Great place. (Remember, I did live in Santa Rosa for the past three years, and the three summer months out of every year previous in my life.) For today's amusement my parents, dog, best friend and I went to the Russian River for a nice picnic. We walked quite aways to find the perfect "secluded" spot, and were promptly bombarded by a continous stream of canoes for the whole afternoon. Apparantly we were just downstream from a canoe rental place, and the nice sandy outcropping we'd staked out was just perfect for canoers to dock on for a quick rest. A bit irritating, but on the other hand they did provide some good entertainment when they'd get tangled up in sticks or drop their paddles or something. :-)

It was a few weeks before summer vacation started when the local school Pokemon pusher gave my mutant pigs their first hit of this insidious stuff. Until a few weeks ago it was Pokemon all day, every day, and as far into the night as they could get away with.

I was tired of prying their GameBoys out of their grubby little paws to get them to go to sleep at night. I was tired of hearing the insipid videos blaring from their room. I was *really* sick and tired of the constant "WE WANT MORE POKEMON STUFF NOW!".

Finally, through a reddish, sleep deprived haze, I did what any loving, nurturing parent would do. I blew a gasket. The edict came down from on high.

"You will gather every Pokemon item in this house. Every game, card, video, hat. You will pull the posters from the walls. You will scrap the stickers from your headboards. You will remove the t-shirts from your little bodies. You will gather it all and place it all before my feet. You will do this now lest you cause the Monster of the Neverending Chores to be released. Go!"

Though there was lipquivering and tears, they did as they were commanded. All Pokemon stuff was put in a bag and placed in the hiding spot that they have not yet found. The hew and crying was amazing. You'd have thought I killed their cats. They pleaded with me. They pleaded with the Goddess of the Household. They promised the behavior of the angels. This lasted about a week. I firmly believe that kicking heroin is harder.

They now romp and scamper in the sunny fields as little proto- delinquents should during summer vacation and the noise level in the home has returned to normal. Parents, be warned. Pokemon is the new kiddiecrack. Just say no.
