Short for "Rotate 13." It's a cheap cypher; take each letter, and replace it with the letter 13 counts away from it (ie a = n, b=o, n = a, o=b.) Used as a precursor to spoiler space, IIRC, and also to hide potentially offensive jokes. Theory was, you had to make some form of effort to decode it signifying that you consented to read it.

While many newsreaders can DECODE ROT13, not all of them can ENCODE ROT13.

However, I did find a freeware ROT13 program for Windows that can handle encoding. And there are other commercial programs that can handle ROT13 as well, assuming your newreader can't. And for those with such an inclination it might be an interesting mini-project to write a program yourself since it is such a very simple algorithm.

I think asking people to download and install a ROT13 encoder, then run their post through it, before posting a spoiler, would be asking a great deal.

Spoiler space is available to anyone with any newsreader running on nay platform, without much extra effort. Even when reading, scrolling down the page is easier than unscrambling ROT13. K.I.S.S.!

you can't do that last bit, in netscape. you can only decode/encode existing posts, not ones you're writing. i think that's what he meant.

That's true that ROT13 encode and decode involve the same arithmetic operation. But while Outlook Express can decode ROT13 it can't encode outgoing messages--that operation isn't available. (In decoding with OE, you click ROT13 and it rotates the entire message so the gibberish becomes plaintext and the plaintext becomes gibberish.) Agent (and Free Agent) does have that facility, among other nice features. If I were inclined to spend the money and had a good enough news server to make it worth bothering with I might drop Outlook Express in favor of a really good news reader like Agent.
