I'm currently working on my first fanfic...one which will set up a way to keep the Daria-Trent thing from spoiling "Daria" as a series and which will set up a lot of funny situations for Trent...
The primary premise is this: Trent gets disgusted with Mystik Spiral, the band disbands, and Trent hops into his car and zooms off to the center of the music industry...Los Angeles.
With Trent in LA for the majority of the next season, Daria and Trent can continue their flirtations from a safe distance, with no chance of anything resembling Statutory Rape occuring. I'm sure Daria's on the cusp of 17 now...Daria could turn 18 just in time for Trent's return.
Trent and Daria could both have brushes with other people of the opposite sex, and there could be ample room for a little of the Green Monster sneaking in.
I live in LA. My husband's a musician. There is *so much* in the LA music scene that deserves to be ripped to shreds satirically.

No, she had a birthday, they didn't say anything about her turning 17. (Or did they?) How many birthdays has Lisa and Bart Simpson had???? They're still 8 and 10 years old.
I'm sure that it was clearly stated on D-Day that she and Daria are both 16, so now we can presume that Jane is now 17. Unless they meant that she was just turning 16... I suppose we'll have to wait for the fact to be proven.

Again, that is if they decide to age the characters. Remember way back in the second season of the Simpsons??? Bart wanted to pass the fourth grade???? Well it's eight years later and he's still in the same class with the same teacher, and same students. Doesn't matter if you just have a birthday, Dennis the Menace keeps having a birthday, and he continues to stay 10 according to his creator.
I've heard the writers plan to let the characters age with time. Now whether they're going to let them age "normally" or if they're going to age more slowly than normal is the question. I guess it depends on how long the show lasts, but I could see the series lasting long enough for us to see Daria in college (if she even decides to go to college.) It would be satisfying to at least see her graduate from Lawndale. Jane is 17 if there's going to be any sort of continuity.
It's my personal belief that the final episode will end with Daria and Jane graduating from Lawndale High. It would be great to see her in college, but the series focuses on high school life (or "student life at the dawn of a new millennium", to use the motif of the series). Taking them out of high school would change the whole storyline, and would be better suited to a spin-off.
I hope they don't rush it all along too quickly-- I mean, yes, Daria should mature as a character, but after that, the show might lose some of its appeal if it tried to shove everyone into college. A jillion issues that would potentially hurt the show -- for example, what happens to the whole rest of the family? Let's face it, Helen and Jake's attempts at parenting are one of the funnier themes of the show (J:"Do I have to *read* these?" H:"Later.") and (H:"You're not *helping* me!"). And what of the other students at LHS, especially Jane -- I don't think I'd watch it without her on the show. Besides, there's a ton of HS material still left to cover-- driver's ed (film, "The Last Prom" (1956)), the big homecoming football game and the battle to be the homecoming queen (Quinn vs. Brittany?), the struggle for the privilege of the valedictory address, fun with the school paper (*never* put someone with a grudge in charge of writing the headlines <g>), oh, the list goes on and on...

I don't think so...particularly if Daria and Jane are both at the same college that's within spitting distance of home.

Realistically, there is no such animal anymore. At least in Los Angeles the entire driver's ed/driver training program has been shelved. Perhaps in a rich neighborhood like Lawndale there would be enough of a tax base to support it, but from what I understand this is a trend. A good episode would be Quinn getting money for private driver's ed/drivers training while they overlook that Daria's long overdue...one of the leitmotifs of the show is how Mom and especially Dad dotes on Quinn and figures that Daria is bright enough to get through life without any help from the Parental Units. This breeds a great deal of resentment on Daria's part.

I don't think that Daria has anything to do with the school paper at LHS...I think she got that out of her system at Highland High.
Sorry...yeah, the name popped up as I was driving back with my hubby after a trip to Sam Ash to get a gig bag for his keyboard. My ability to transfer memes from short to long term memory is limited thanks to a bout with Chronic Fatigue a few years ago...in remission now but the cognitive stuff never came back 100%.
Jodie would be the valedictorian for sure. Remember, Jane could care less about something like that. And Daria...she would reject the whole concept out of hand.
Ah...you are bringing back my own memories of Los Angeles Valley College c.1980 to 1983. We had a Compugraphic which you had to type in codes for...a lot like HTML looking back at it...and a manual headline setter.
We were pulling in scholastic press awards left and right, though. I wrote a column about music. Biggest story: Oingo Boingo gig at LAVC Monarch Hall.

If what you say is true, then it's a shame that today's students don't get to see those wonderful driver ed movies from the 50's and 60's. I mean who could forget such acting? And the special effects? And such powerful and gripping storylines? ("Bill and Mary only thought that this day would be momentous because it was the day of the prom. They were sadly mistaken.") And the guy with the crewcut and the deep voice, saying, "This could happen you. To any of you," as the police, dressed in Mayberry-style Barney Fife uniforms, loiter around the wrecked car(s) and shake their heads slowly from side to side?
Oh, I dunno ... any opportunity to give back to the establishment of LHS as good as she got ... especially any opportunity to humiliate Quinn in front of God and everyone else ... I would hope that Daria would take advantage of such a golden opportunity to make some wonderful closing comments/observations/whatever. Never mind the irony of an "outsider" getting in the last word. <g> Makes me wish I'd studied a little harder in HS. (Out of 675 in my class...)
Besides, Daria doesn't have all of those extracurricular activites eating up valuable study time, unlike Jodie.
All I remember is a huge machine that resembled a copier on steriods attempting to eat a really crappy old computer. That, and the strong smell of wet printouts full of headlines and body text that had to be chopped into columns with an X-acto knife. Oh, and the UHU glue, too ... and who can forget that dreadful Form-a-line stuff. It never made straight lines without a lot of fiddling. Not like we got top-o'-the-line gear, anyway.
Come to think of it, we also had to type in a bunch of incomprehensible and long forgotten codes, too. It probably was a Compugraphic. This was all circa 1986-87, so take it all with a grain of salt, or eleven.
Yes, they were good memories. *Especially* because *we* didn't win any awards. :D

My best friend and I had our own newspaper which we published ourselves for a coupla years. We called it the P.J. Chronicle (after our names, Patti and Jessi). Yup... 7th and 8th grade... we had like 40 subscribers, too. We did all of it on our electric typewriters and then cut it up with x-acto knives and glued it in with rubber cement, in slightly crooked columns sometimes. :-) We had to copy it at the local quickie mart type place, until my family got a copy machine. I also got a computer, which I named "The Slug of Death." Ah, my good ol' 386 20mhz.... those were the days. In the Chronicle, we actually published national news stories, too. Our motto? "You Hear it Last From Us!" (Alternately: "Last Week's News Today!") I look back, and I go between being amazed at how amusing we were (we had our dry humor in every story) back then to not being able to believe we were THAT horrid of spellers. All in all, though, it was great fun. I'd do it again, in a heartbeat. Oh, and we didn't win any awards, either. ;-)
I could imagine Daria frantically trying to fail a class so her GPA will drop and she won't be valedictorian, with Mr. O'Neill running about trying to make sure she *doesn't*.
(Fortunately, I got some bad grades as a freshman so I didn't have to worry about it)

Well, around here, the faculty reviews and edits the valediction and salutation. And since they're holding your diploma hostage... Actually, what they're most concerned about lately is not "telling it like it is." That's not a problem. Obscenity? We can overlook that. Banality? Expected, even encouraged. But mention a deity, except as a profane expletive, and you're busted. I think almost anything Daria might write would pass muster.
Wish that was the case at my school. I had to usher at graduation this year, and of course sit through all the speeches. There wasn't one speech that went by without mentioning deity this and deity that. I guess that's what I get for living down south... but it was still enough to make my stomach turn. I might have to read one of those speeches at my graduation this year, and I certainly won't be talking like that. Even if they write my speech for me. (Getting to the point...) The school, meaning Ms. Li, would probably write Daria's speech for her, thinking that that would prevent her from embarrassing anyone. But knowing Daria, she'd probably not use the speech she was given, and tell them what she really thought of all of them. Boy would I like to do that at my school....
Jane, valedictorian? Excuse my ignorance, but isn't that when you have the highest grades in your graduating class? Because in "Gifted" (That *was* the name of the episode...was it?) I remember her saying that she had a C average or something. And that was why she didn't get selected for the "Gifted" school.

Hmm... I think if you re-read that article, it says that they plan to develop the characters over time, which is slightly different than aging them. We've seen tons of character development this season, but aside from the fact that Jane had a birthday, we haven't seen anything suggesting that they are aging significantly. I expect to see the whole crew either stay in the same classes they are now (Quinn's a freshman, everyone else seems to be a sophomore), or MAYBE age a year.
Well I was only trying to make a bad joke by giving a possible title for said spinoff. You are right, I didn't thoroughly read that article, but I did re-read it and it didn't really say that to me(I could be missing the point). What I got is that if you take Daria and Jane out of Lawndale then you get a different show. I agree with that 100%.
That's a good strategy on their part. Considering that most of the advertisers on MTV target to College-age audiences it would also be a very astute move "above the line" as well.
As you know, I wrote that one Daria fanfic, "The Ono Effect," and now I am going to follow it up with more. It's been kinda fun and a good writing exercise. I have a story arc for the rest of them which takes you through Trent's adventures trying to make it on his own for the first time and get his break as a musician in LA.
But getting back to the REAL story arc as opposed to my little fanfic series, it would be just about right if Daria and Jane were Seniors in the 3rd season and graduated at the end of the third season.
