Daria - the Anti-Teen

I thought this was a very funny episode. What the heck was Jake cooking? Chili Con Cheese Puffs with mint? And where did Kevin and Brittany get those clothes? The scary part was that they actually had or knew where to find clothes that ugly. Val was a bit over the top as an aging party girl trying to pretend she's still in her teens and still with it. It was great when Daria told her off. I doubt any of it (except the 30-something part) got through her thick skull, but it was still pretty cool. And edgy. Some of my fav lines in this episode:

* Jane: "I'm sorry, your name again?" * Daria: "Hello. Yes. No. It just isn't. I guess I can't stop you.See you then. Bye." * Daria: "Lawsuit." Mr. O'Neal: "Sorry" * Val: "'Edgy' is going right up to the edge of the cliff and being able to see all the way down, and dancing anway." Jake: "What the hell does that mean?" * Daria: "Oh gee Brittany, I'm glad I ran into you. I've decided to try out for the cheerleading squad. Would you mind sponsoring me?" * Daria: "These clubs -- are they very, very dark?" * Val: "Am I to understand that you're not popular at all?" Daria: "That's right -- I don't even have a clique." * Daria: "What am I doing here? How am I going to get through this? Dear God, help me." Val: "Wow, you are so existential. But didn't you write down anything I said?" Daria: "I think he understood after I handed in my essay about spending the day with a totally self-absorbed egomaniacal teen magazine editor doing the work of the devil."

ugly.

The colors! God, the colors! I see them still, in my nightmares!

A less funny Edie (AbFab)?

Yes! I was cheering at the TV during that scene. Val was really asking for it, too.

Heh ... Daria really doesn't like being touched ... by anyone save the lead singer of Mystik Spiral, that is.

Well, what it really means is acting stupidly, as Val proceeds to demonstrate throughout the episode.

That was such an evil thing for her to say :)

Again, I thought this was a really good episode.

Sincerely Yours, Jordan

They did look horrible, didn't they? Was quite surprised to find them looking that gah gah awful.

With less style and class too, scarily enough.

it,

Perhaps the least painful scene of the entire episode.

*g*...remember one of the last scenes from "[address]", when he hugged Daria? No utterances of "lawsuit" over THAT touch now.... *g*

Methinks Val hadn't the slightest clue of what "edgy" really meant/means, except from what she'd herself been fed through by the middle-aged male ad executives whose job it is to sell teens onto products they'd never previously have a desire for. (Like, I don't think Cover Girl will make me look like Niki Taylor, nor will clothing from Old Navy instantly turn me into Morgan Fairchild.)

But so good! I loved it when she said that!

Me too. The only really painful part about it was, well, Val. I really did pity her, and felt it was just too awful that she had sold out completely on the whole idea of being "youthful". You can see how her pursuit of youth had ironically sped up her aging (she didn't look 30-something, she looked 50-something...heck, Mom looks younger than her and Mom's going to be 54 this year).

Deena Lissa whispered, in mellifluent and heart-achingly beautiful tones: (SPOILERS) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Yes, I almost expected their shirts to creep down a well and start slaughtering a whole farm, farmfolk included (Lovecraft reference which I'm sure many of you out there will get).

The really funny part was that Kevin and Brittany *normally* wear the school colors (football and cheerleader uniform, respectively).

Edie's somewhat redeemed by her (ineptly expressed) love for Saffron. (Who incidentally, is a girl who could really use a friend like Daria).

Yes, I do :)

executives whose job it is to sell teens onto products they'd > never previously have a desire for.

Well, *literally* "edgy" (in the sense she was TRYING to use it) derives from "cutting-edge", which is a highly meaningful term where technology (or other fields where there is genuine "progress") is concerned. But I doubt Val knows this, because where art or fashion is concerned it's generally meaningless. The whole "dancing on the edge of a cliff" metaphor well describes Val's real life, as revealed in her phone conversation!

I felt sorry for her to. Daria was being rather cruel to her at the end (especially considering the traumatic discovery Val had just made), but then again Val sorely provoked her, over a prolonged period. I actually think that Daria held back for a long time, and then exploded in the final conversation with Val. Maybe Daria felt a bit sorry for her too, but after a point just couldn't take any more.

year).

Same thing as with Helen, and for the same reason ... your Mom and Helen have both lived happy, fulfilling, *adult* lives. Incidentally, Daria has the kind of appearance that ages well ... she has a certain quiet beauty now, and she probably will still look very much the same at 50.

Not me, unfortunately.

Yeah, so they could've come as they normally are and fit right in.

Yeah. Now THERE's a girl who expresses more cynicism than Daria does. But...lord knows how hard Edie tries to express how much she truly cares for her daughter. Doesn't know exactly HOW to, though.

No

from

The

life,

It does, doesn't it?

Well...I think the whole fashion scene is just one huge joke anyways. What's wrong with wearing something you feel comfortable with, if it's something you got three, four years ago? It's still good, still fits, doesn't have any holes, and looks nice. I will never understand....

Y'know, I noticed that too. Kinda like at first Daria was holding off on her usual sarcasm, but then she got to the point where she couldn't stand it anymore. So...poor Val AND poor Daria.

this

Yeah...my mom even got married early and jumped straight from high school to the work force. So she's been grown up for a while. I'm glad she's conservative about the way she expresses herself.

I agree about Daria...and, if she matures as per the story in "WWIH", Quinn too. The whole Morgendorffer family. Plus Jane and Trent.

Gosh...can you imagine Daria at 50? Hm....

Deena Lissa declaimed various things in a voice which rang sharp and clear across our embattled land ... (SPOILERS) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Dear Deena,

The Lovecraft reference is to "The Colour Out of Space", a story written in the 1920's which is the grand-daddy of all the Awful Things From Outer Space Come to Earth genre stories and movies. It's about a weird glowing plasmoid thingie which sucks the life out of a whole farm, and it's distinguished by its unearthly colour.

Heh ... abandoning her to Arab slave traders was perhaps not the most maternal thing she ever did. Though fortunately Saffron got out of that on her own ... we never exactly learn how, but the way Saff's life goes, probably in a way involving much embarassment.

Saffron's life is objectively worse than Daria's in every way save the financial. At least Daria has a stable, albiet dysfunctional, family, including both a mother and a father, both of whom are there for her (however ineptly). She has good reason to be cynical.

Interestingly enough, Edie shows many of the same good points as Saffron, though she hides them under her good-time girl persona. Edie's smart and creative ... the major mistake of her life was probably her choice of a best friend. All the drugs and booze cover up a fine mind.

I agree with you. Fashion as fun is one thing ... taking it seriously boggles my mind.

Yes. Val would have done better to inflict herself on somebody less honest than Daria. Jane, for example, was perfectly willing to suck up to Val in exchange for a trip to New York. (Jane also, I think, is less sympathetic to the failings of others than is Daria, so aside from her desire for gain she would have been less inhibited by pity).

Heh, wouldn't want to have Edie as a mother? (just kidding)

I think Daria would probably become a major influence on her culture by 50. I think she's destined to become a major writer.

Actually, I think Saffie would be better off with a friend like Jane. While I generally agree with most of what Saffron (and Daria) say, I think both could stand to lighten up just a tad. Jane seems to be fulfilling that function on Daria, but Saffron only has the mundane friend that Edie's always referring to as "Titicaca", who doesn't do much more than agree with Saffie and get intimidated by Edie and Patsy. Although I think Daria and Saffie would enjoy each other's friendship, I don't think the relationship would affect their behavior any.

Tice opined:

You're probably right. Saffron's too similar to Daria to make a good complement. Though I think she could use all the friends she could get.

Would make an interesting crossover, wouldn't it? I don't think the age factor would be too much of a barrier, unless we assume that the crossover was in the future of AbFab (in which case Saffron might be more reminiscent of Aunt Amy).

Sincerely Yours, Jordan

Oh, no. Spoiler. Space.

Yawn!

Humm.....

Right, then! In article , [email] (JBassior) writes:

I wouldn't call it cruel. I think Daria was being honest, and in her own way, helpful. Val can't continue to live in her schizophrenic adolescence forever. The longer she perpetuates the illusion, the more catastrophic will be the disillusionment. Now, did Daria think Val would (or could) accept this? I'm sure it crossed her mind that the reaction she got was the only one possible from such a pathetic case. Still, it wouldn't be "right" in Daria's mind to fail to try.

Peace Kevin

helpful.

I think it was both cruel and helpful, under the heading of "having to be cruel to be kind". And while it may have had helpful effects, I think this time Daria was motivated primarily by annoyance. Daria was suppressing her natural honesty most of that day, in order to *avoid* a fight. After putting up with this for a darn long time (remember what she was writing on her notepad?) Daria finally couldn't keep it in any longer and told Val just what she thought of her.

True. I don't foresee a happy future for Val. Even less happy than for Edie, at least Edie has Saffron.

Probably not. But as the great mariner and philosopher Popeye said "I've had all I can standsk cuz I can't standsk no more!" And so Daria let fly with her logical guns, blowing a mighty hole in the side of Val's ship of ego.

I agree with you that in effect Daria was doing Val a favor, and that one of the motives for her honesty in general is that Daria hates being lied to, thus hates lying to others. Still, I don't think it did much good. Val simply took it as a personal attack.

Great. Now I'll be humming Nick Lowe tunes all evening.

Agreed.

About the same things I wrote in *my* notepad at my last supervisors' meeting. It's tough to be surrounded by egotistical, monomaniacal martinets. And tougher to know that you're generally considered as one of them, by position, not merit. Sorry. Digression.

<snip>

I never followed AbFab. I wouldn't know, but I'll take your word.

Nice metaphor!

Well, Daria essentially assaulted her core values, shallow and insubstantial as they are. Daria, from her position of deeply and firmly held beliefs, would undoubtedly be seen as "disturbing" and "countercultural" from Val's perspective.
