There don't seem to be many messages here recently! I've actually had time to catch up on some other newsgroups.

I've just updated the newsletter thingy at the Last Stop Cafe, listing all my recent additions (with hotlinks to them all for those dis- inclined to go the long way round and visit the relevant parts of my site), including various Daria things such as an animated gif of Brittany singing "they must be worried". OK so it's silent, but after some careful tuning it came out smaller and a whole lot sharper than an mpg of the same sequence (ie. you can see Daria wince), and it cycles nicely.

Re J***-17, one of the things I found useful (apart from the COMBAT BAG, which I've now discovered doubles nicely as a Thunderbirds-style hat) was the guide to American Football. I hadn't realised previously that the QB is supposed to be the star of the team - the Kevin stuff makes rather more sense now!

It's, umm...the calm before the storm?

Whatever happened to that fanfic everyone was supposed to write? It just kinda died.

BAG,

I wouldn't take that guide to American football as the gospel truth, if I were you. My research consisted of me asking all my friends if they knew anything about the subject which they didn't so I just made it up on the basis of Varsity Blues and Kev going, "I'm the QB, woo yeah!" Seemed to work though!

Actually that depends on what level you're playing. Elemmentary schools play 4- 8 minute quarters while pros an colleges play 15 min. quarters. Although, a good portion of the clock can be eaten up in between plays, if the ball becomes dead inbounds and there is no change of possession or incomplete pass.

I can answer any questions about the rules of American football since I referee (I'm one of the guys with the striped shirt and funny looking baseball hat) at a secondary school level.

Damn, man! I am so sorry to hear about your eyesight problem.

Or is it just the pro zebras that have to be legally blind? ;)

That's pro basketball refs that are blind (there are only 4 or 5 NBA officials that have 20/20 vision, from what I hear). I also ref basketball (I've got a few games tonight) but I don't need corrective lenses, yet ;)

Pro Football officials just seem to have trouble making judgements and with confidence. At least now they are making the calls quickly even if they're wrong. One of the first things I was taught, is that if you look like you're sure that you're making the right call, then people watching are less likely to give you a lot of crap.

Incidentially, my superiors tell me I on pace to be on of the youngest NFL officials ever, if I keep at it (I'm 21 and I'm already up to high school [JV and freshman]).

I hope Santa is there, too. He usually gets the brunt of the boos/snowballs around here. The way I figure, as long as I don't punt for the Cowboys, I'm safe ;)

Working at becoming one of the most hated people in America?

Mike, I'm starting to worry about you. ;)

I don't know exactly what that means.

It started out just for spending money (any way I can make almost $60 cash on a Saturday morning, is a good idea to me). I like to enforce all kinds of rules anyway; so I might as well get paid for it.

But now, I'm starting to really get in to it. And there always the fantasy of saying stuff like "pass interference. number 21 defense. The ball will be placed at the spot of the foul. First down!" on national television ;)

Actually, what I've found is that, at any given time, only half of the people will hate you while the rest will be at least indifferent (maybe even a temporary friend). It's a complicated formula based on the score of the game, how many flags you've thrown against the losing team and (in my case) which team has more parental support (that support usually being given in the form of colorful phrases like, "you suck -- yeah, you with the white hat" or "get the pigdeon shit out of youe eyes" or "how can you call that, you suck." I could go on forever, there isn't much I haven't heard yet).

You wouldn't be the only one <hehe>

Hmm... Ok, I'm taking bets that no matter what field <hehe> Mike chooses for a career, he ends up in law enforcement. ;)

So are you going to post the list?

LOL! Now that you mention it, about half of the other refs I work with are police officers. I wouldn't take that bet, though; I wouldn't like to have a job where taking a bullet is an occupational hazard. I don't think I would like to wear a silly uniform either ;)

There's a list?!?! I didn't know there was a list.

Oh, you expect me to give you a list. Gee, I wouldn't know where to start that one (actually, my mother would be at the top, but that's probably true of a lot of people).

Well, I'd have to say it's pretty accurate. The QB is, almost always, the star. His favorite reciever and the hotshot rookie can take the stage as well, but the fame generally revolves around the QB.
