Lawndale meets Middle-Earth

I found a website with equivalents in the High Elven language (Quenya) from "The Lord of the Rings" for hundreds of common and uncommon personal names. After I look up my own, I saw "Stacey" right above it, and decided to look up the Elven names of major "Daria" characters.

I cheated a little bit on Trent's name.

My biggest problem was Jane's brother Wind. That sounds just like a name that an Elf might have, but it's so unusual in our world that it wasn't in the Names website. So I went to another Tolkien website and---sure enough---there was an Elvish name "Son of the Wind." The other website is: http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/qlist.htm

Another problem is that 3 people have first names that are variations of the feminine of John. In other words, we have 2 Janes and a Janet. However, the Janet is Mrs. Barch, who's really an orc anyway, so she doesn't even NEED an Elvish name. Ms. Li is very likely an Orc also.

I suppose it's possible to translate Lawndale into Quenya using the words for "grass" and "valley" but I didn't bother.

Anyway, here are the names. Enjoy.

JANE - Eruntalle TRENT - Anwaner (I couldn't find "Trent" in the list, so I went with "Truman," which is Anglo-Saxon for "true man." The Quenya name means "real or true man," in other words, a dude who keeps it real. I think Trent would like it.) PENNY - Lanyare, Vaire or Vire VINCENT (their dad) - Mapalon WIND - Surion (I can't remember the name of Jane's mom. A little help here?)

The Morgendorffers:

HELEN - Alce or Alcie JAKE - Encaitar QUINN - Lempenis (The person who wrote the site considers Quinn a man's name, so I added the Quenya word "nis", which means "woman" to the end of her word for Quentin / Quinn.) DARIA - Maneharne or Maraharne (Daria, BTW, is given as the feminine of Darius, a Persian name supposedly meaning "possesor of good things." Now you know.)

Jane's mother is named Amanda.

Defoe's first name is Claire, not Jane.

Mack is short for Michael so he would be Manveru

Trent comes from the various Trent rivers in England. According to a genealogy site I found: <i>Uncertain entymology. May have been given to those known for traveling, one who lived near one of various rivers named Trent in England or from a town named Trent near Dorset.</i>

So we can make that "wanderer from the river" thus (my own construction): S�rer�na

Wind, you could just use the Quenya word for wind, S�r�

Brittany come from the name of a region in France, related to the Briton tribe of England, as many Britons emigrated to France near the fall of the Roman Empire. After much searching, found that the Britons got their name because at the time of conquest, the Romans decided to call their leader Brutus. which, ironically enough, may have come from the word for 'stupid'. The Elves were too nice to call anyone stupid, but we can use "empty head": Lustac�r�

A note on Quinn: You wouldn't add _n�s_ to a name to make it feminine. You would add _-iel_ thus, Lempiel. But going by the site's own guidelines the masculine form of Quinn should be Lempon, and the feminine form <i>would</i> be Lemp�

A note on Sandi: This is just more a matter of taste, but since Sandi and I share a common nomial etymology, I feel I must speak. Sandi (and Alexa) come from Alexandra, the feminine form of Alexander meaning "defender of mankind". Now, being a pluralist, I never felt the "of mankind" to be necessary, thus I am "defender", including bunnies and kitties into my sphere of protection. _varya-_ is the verb for "defend, protect" and _-iss�_ is the feminine equivilent to "-er" So: Varyiss�

I've known plenty of men nicknamed "Mack" where it turned out to be short for one of those Gaelic last names like McHenry, McIntosh, etc. That's why I interpreted Mack as "son of" somebody. I've never heard Mack as "short for Michael," but that may be a regional difference.

I'm a Southerner. We have a lot of people of Scottish and Scots-Irish decent down here.

I was aware of Sure, but I actually came across Surion ("wind's son") at one of the Quenya websites, so I used that. Either way, it sounds very "Elvish" to me.

I know, but since Middle-Earth geography is completely different from what we know, I didn't think I could use it. That's why I picked up the equivalent of "Bridget" instead.

They wouldn't name a daughter "empty head" for precisely the same reason. It describes her well enough, I must admit.

That sounds nice. Although, because of Fluffy, Sandi might prefer to be known as the defender of cats. I got Varne from the website.
