Who started atd

I'd like to know who started this newsgroup. How do you start an alt. newsgroup anyway. And another question: Does someone know a free newsserver that carries atd and that keeps messages for more than just a few days? MSB

Just going to quickly reply to this post, then disconnect...have to free up the phone line, get to business with laundry, etc....

Zack is correct, a guy name Onno Hovers cmsg'ed the a.t.d newsgroup indeed, but the message he cmsg'ed off of was by a Megan1114, but a Michael Pfeffer was also trying at the same time to justify an a.t.d newsgroup. This all took place around January 1998. (source: simple DejaNews search yield of "Daria" as text search, "alt.tv.daria" as subject search, and "alt.config" as forum search) It's highly recommended you read some of these posts...LOL, some of them are laughable (like one person said "why isn't alt.tv.mtv good enough a place for discussion?" or something like that...LOL, if they only knew....)

p.s.: Off topic...but I also found out who created the Duran Duran newsgroup...ah well, since there's another fellow Duranie Darianite here...Robyn...I'll spill...a guy named Alan Hall, back in '97...interesting.....

Yes, Father, that was the beginning of the second season. I know because around the time this newsgroup was being cmsg'ed, I was busily being converted to Darianism. As for whether or not anyone from this newsgroup dates to that time... well, I do see a [email] posting...I remember that person...and Mikel Midnight...I remember him too...from the dates 1 February 1998 to 30 March 1998 (the first 2 full months of this newsgroup's existence). As far as any other regulars from that time...if:

I find it interesting that the most influencial names and websites come from that time. Mike Quinn's reviews, paperpusher's schedule, and I assume Martin Pollard is also from that time, with Outpost Daria taking over for the oldies but goodies (not to mention the three web rings he now runs!).

Fascinating. (although as much as I try, I can't do the one-eyebrow thing).

Planet Daria and alt.lawndale.com. The grammar wasn't the clearest on that point, now that I look at the original post. When I first started looking for Daria online, Planet Daria was still up and going. The Outpost took over a good deal of the material, thank goodness.

Makes me kinda wish I was here to see it all happen. Alas, I didn't really start getting into newsgroups until late last year. But...I do know this one chat that's been operational since at least November 1997, that I usually chat at, and I was one of the first people to enter on the very first chat held there. And I've been an active participant of an online forum since September 1997. Ah well, maybe years from now people will say much the same about this time period...when they're not discussing Daria's killer bio final or the journalism workshop at the large State University.

This reminds me of one of the funniest things that happened to me in my "youth."

I had (and still have) a friend who was something of a troublemaker. Nothing serious, just the "random teenage shenanigans (sp?)".

We had gone to a movie (The Black Cauldron, actually) and we jumped a fence to cut through a guy's lawn. We were about halfway across when this "killer" dog (itty bitty thing. Wouldn't scare a cockroach) comes tearing at us along with the middle-aged owner of the lawn and he yells at us, "What do you think you're doing!??!", and my friend said firmly back, "We're cutting accross your lawn!"

He was so surprized at the bald truth of the statement, that he was totally flabbergasted and said quite confusedly, "Well..uh...don't do it again." and we continued on our merry way.

??? Alt.* newsgroups are _much_ easier to create than, say, big 8 newsgroups. It could be done in about 2 minutes if you skip all the formalities (NOT recommended if you actually want your group to propogate.) And even the formalities are much simpler for alt.* groups.

Well, there's always www.deja.com... but you're probably better off with whatever you've got now.

You could try Demon's public newsserver, pubnews.demon.co.uk. I don't know how long it keeps alt groups, but the servers for Demon's own customers keep non-binary alt groups for 21 days.

I think pubnews is a read-only server though - you'd probably have to post responses via your own ISP's server.
