About Spoilers.....

This is bound to raise the number of posts.

Over at the X-Files newsgroup I posted a question about how long to keep up spoiler messages concerning an episode. Someone had posted a message without warnings about recent episode and people got mad. Some people replied that after the episode airs you don't need the warnings. Lots od disagreement over this.

Now, since Daria is in reruns (in the US) until February and there are fewer posters here than in the other newsgroup, I thought I'd pose the question here. How long do you keep up a spoiler warning? Until after it airs on the east cost? Until the next day? Until a month after? Until it's shown in the UK, Canada and Australia? Maybe we should take a vote.

What does everyone else think?

My view, for whatever it's worth, is that adding spoiler warnings and spoiler space takes so little effort, and has so much benefit (namely protecting my fellow fans from a spoiled episode), that I'm quite happy to continue using it until a new series has been shown once in each country represented on atd.

The biggest segments of the atd-reading fanbase are in the USA (66%) and UK (24%)[1]. I posted the spoiler policy weekly while s3 was having its first showing in these countries, since that's the time when discussion about new eps is most likely to occur, and new fans are most likely to find the ng (ISTM).

How often should it be posted when (i) a new series is *not* having a first showing anywhere? (ii) a new series is having a first showing, but only in one of the less well represented countries?

Views welcome. 8-)

Of course, anyone who feels strongly is quite at liberty to retrieve the spoiler policy and re-post it as often as they see fit. I won't get all territorial about it!

Aw, heck, I can do this, though-- the primetime airtime for Daria on MTV US has moved to Fridays at 10PM, starting in early December, and this will be the timeslot for the new season 4 eps as well.

Heh. Wish I got MTV. I've got east and wast YTV, which means I can get the same episode at either 5 or 8 on Fridays. Not that either would be better, cause I work from 5 to 12 on friday nights...

I think we can assume that it's practically the same in all of continental Europe. Season 3 hasn't aired (at least not completely)

I doubt they have a version dubbed in Czech and there is no German version. MTV Germany has some localised content (VJs and some shows) but that's all original content. They don't dub shows that were produced in English. And I'm glad about it. Tracy's voice cannot be replaced. MSB

Actually, in Slovakia, it's dubbed, as I chatted with someone from there. I think, though, it's dubbed into Czech. (Since it's not dubbed in Germany, I just used the process of elimination... ;-)

p.s.: If you don't have to, DON'T learn French. Nothing is more dissatisfying. I had 5 years of French in school (4 hours a week), was the best in class and I don't understand a word they're saying because they talk so fast and sloppy. I say, learn Japanese instead. I studied it for just a few months several years ago and still I can pick up phrases when watching an anime.

And say "Watashiwa gokiburi" (I am a cockroach). Actually, Japanese is a language that, like, makes sense...as opposed to English or German. I guess the Japanese Gods had something better to do, the German Gods are out to confuse Phil with their fiendish grammar :)

I watch Daria on MTV Germany, which is freely receivable in the main parts of Europe via satellite--unless(!) you have a receiver with a built-in Videocrypt decoder. (Astra 19,2� East: 11,612V PAL 7,02&7,20) It�s on fridays at 21:30 and repeated saturdays at 9:30 CET.

They neither dub (thank god!) nor use subtitles. This probably makes the show less popular than it could be, because of all the "big words".

If memory serves, they have already shown most episodes of seasons 1 and 2, and season 3 up to "Lane Miserables". Consequently, "Jake of Hearts" should be next.

I would say that spoiler warnings of some sort should remain until everyone has had a chance (emphasis on chance) to see an episode, which means at least until an episode has aired everywhere it's supposed to air. How long after that should the warnings be dropped? I would say a couple of days to a week or two, but that is debatable.

Simply add the spoiler space in your follow-ups.
