Hamlet

Did anyone notice the significance of what Mr. O'Neill was reading in "Jake of Hearts"? Not only is he talking about people mocking at true emotion (only to be interrupted by the damn DJs) but it is a portion from "Hamlet" and in the episode where Daria is (as she said in her speech) dealing with the possible mortality of her father, as Hamlet was dealing with the death of his... and Jake did even say "Avenge my death!" at one point....

I was thinking about that, not only in the light of the situation with Jake and all but also with the situation with the DJs...prefabricated emotion successfully trying to rouse up even more prefabricated emotion from the students. "Come, hypothesize with me".... It also seems that this could be the story of Daria's and Jane's lives...they deal with real emotions on a daily basis and are thusly unpopular, while the popular people at the school put on their emotions like they would a new outfit. To have this particular little spiel interrupted by the moron DJs is but one more way the DJs could've completely made Daria's existence a living hell. OK...wait, I forgot what else I was about to say..."eep".

I agree. And note the contrast between the DJs' phony emotions and the real turmoil Daria was going through in that episode. I really LOVED it when Daria told them off in front of the whole crowd. I was cheering for Daria at that moment.
