Daria and Anime

I was wondering, has there been any discussion here as what Daria's opinion of anime would be? Do you think she would she hate it, ignore it or actually like it?

I think if she liked it, she would, publicly, like it for the really acclaimed dark stories like Grave of the Fireflies (Two kids try to survive in post WW II Japan), Barefoot Gen (a boy survives the atomic bombing of Hiroshima) or Princess Mononoke. The complex political tales of Legend of Galactic Heroes would probably interest her as well.

Quietly, I bet she would enjoy PatLabor (a series about a police giant robot pilot and support team) for its intelligence, humour and well staged action with some intriguing female characters.

Of course, this would depend on Quinn's opinion of this stuff. If she hated it, then Daria would explore it if only to annoy her sister.

I'd guess she'd have mixed feelings on it. Maybe like you went on to say...stuff like Grave of the Fireflies, Barefoot Gen, Princess Monoke. Probably The Wings of Honeamise, too. Patlabor? Hm...maybe. If she'd secretly dig that, maybe something like the second Tank Police OAV series (New Dominion Tank Police, wasn't it?) would be up her ally, too. Urotsukidojii? Heh, never. ;)

Now, Quinn's thing about anime...I'd have to say Quinn would probably hate anime. "Ewww!!! Cartoons where people die? That is SO wrong. Plus, have you ever seen the people that BUY those videotapes? Walking fasion emergencies..."

I can't really see Daria having a mixed opinion on anything, but I'm not sure what her stance might be. Ever the pessimist, she might point out that the values expressed in anime put too much emphasis in action before thought, and the needs of others before ones own. (Central themes in most anime I've watched.)

Ironically, after seeing GBAA, I think Quinn would get a kick out of "Wings of Honeamise," but Daria would find it too touchy-feelly. I didn't care for it either. After watching the whole thing through, I said, "*This* was created by the folks who did Evangelion?"

Of course, Quinn would also like the "-mon" series and probably "Nadia" as well... but she probably wouldn't understand the last one.

Depends which programmes she sees. I figure she'd be smart enough to realise that while a some of it's crap, other stuff is really quite good. Just like anything else.

They're characters in anime. Ruri is a lot like Daria, and Rei is a lot like Andrea. Shinji is a lot like Stacy, despite being a male (and if you're thinking of doing a crossover fanfic, too late.) And Akito... I can't really compare him to a Daria character. Well, maybe Tom, since they both seem to be quite the reluctant ladies men.

Well, I can't speak for my fellow mutual fans, but I like anime, but as I said, I don't think Daria would like it or buy into it.

I based Quinn's liking of "WoH" on her "GBAA" trip. One of the major themes of it is the power of spirituality versus the advancements of technology and the mundane world in general, not because I didn't like it.

Although I can see what you're getting at. I've yet to meet a female Daria/Trent shipper who doesn't have a crush on Trent. Draw you're own conclusions from here.
