What hasn't been covered yet in "Daria" fanfic?

Because I'm also tinkering with writing "Daria" fanfic a bit, what aspects of Darialand haven't been covered in particular? The interesting aspects, not the boring ones, of course. What do readers want to see more of?

Family court, I seem to be the only one who has based a fic on it.

Jake attempting to bond with Daria and Quinn fics are also rare.

Jane's adventures as a freshman are virgin territory.

Whatever you decide to write please no more Daria/Trent. I know its an easy way to get positive feedback but the premise stinks.

I have been working on a long screenplay about Daria and Jane, and their entry into the 21st century in college. It isn't finished yet. It also isn't light reading, but has some humor in it.

I can see where Jake's attempts to be a great dad would make for some amusing work.

Uh, err, let's see. I might be able to work around that without being too weird. Hmm. I *should* do something about it, and I have been upgrading the fiction to take care of discrepancies as I write (one reason I love the Internet).

This was the option I used. It actually happened to me, in a way. I missed out on a small scholarship for my freshman year at college, but someone who won the scholarship changed his mind and didn't go to that school after all, so I got his scholarship. Works for me.

Well, if you're looking for truly 100% virgin territory, you're going to have to be very creative, because there've been a LOT of Daria fanfics written.

There was a question recently about Tiffany fanfics on PPMB. It turns out there are very few. Of course, as has been said more than once, Tiffany is hard to write for. She's been on the series so much, and been given so little depth, than any story that *does* give her some depth also seems very out-of-character or non-canonical.

For all they've been on the series, there's been *relatively* little about Kevin and Brittany.

Not much about the actual details of Jake and Helen's life at work, in fanfic or the series. I don't think we ever saw Helen in court in the series, and damn little in fanfic.

Minor characters are usually ill-covered, except Aunt Amy, who has been done to death in fanfic, and Ted DeWitt-Clinton, who hasn't exactly been done to death, but done to within an inch of his life.

Regardless of topic, you might look at writing distinctly humorous fanfics, regardless of subject-matter. The humorous fics have been hugely outnumbered by the angsty ones - there've been a lot of rape-death-suicide-mental institution fics, and some have been very good, but the ROTFL ones have been much less numerous.

Mostly old stuff, I don't think any recent fics have centered on her.

Try to look up "Andrea Speaks" by Kara or "A Stacy Orange" by yours truly.

I have one solid Monique story that I've been poking at for almost a year. Unfortunately, I just have never had the time to turn it into more than twenty pages of plot notes and dialog snippits.

There's also a shortage of Alternate History stories (one's were some aspect of the setting's history has been changed). There's only been four or five of them (the ones I remember being one where Jane is adopted by the Morgandorfers as a baby, one where there never was a Quinn, one where Daria and Jane never became friends, and a work in progress where Daria and Quinn attend Tom's prep school instead of LHS).

I'm sort of surprised that no one's ever done one exploring what might have happened if Jake had actually died in "Jake of Hearts".

I'm also somewhat stunned at the total lack of any fanfics centering on Jodie and Mack's relationship.

She's only appeared in two sceens in the entire show (I suspect that some fans haven't actually seen her on the show at all and are only familier with her through fanfics in which she is cast as the evil slut/drug whore who stands in the way of Daria and Trent's perfect and pure love -- God forbid we ever have a shipper fic in which the protagonist pines after someone who is extremely happy in a relationship with someone else who /isn't/ a freakin' monster). The challenge is to take that and make a fully fleshed out character out of it.

"Choking on Ivy" I think? I think Jill Palmer writes it but I can't remember at the moment. It hasn't been posted on any of the usual places yet. The only link I've found to it was on the Paperpusher's fanfic forum.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of sad and touching than of angst.

I can't see that as realistically happening for at least several /years/ after Jake's death. In spite of their argueing and the way both of them get on each other's nerves (ironically both about their parents and about their jobs), the two of them love each other a lot, and Helen wouldn't just jump back into the dating pool.

I can't really see it. As much as people like to proclaim how unethical Helen is, one of the core pieces of her character is that she want's to be the perfect working wife and mother, and wants to succeed in her chosen career field by her own skill and talent. Having any sort of unprofessional relationship (sexual or romantic) with her boss would probably be seen by Helen as betraying her goals and proving in her own mind that she (and by extention other working women) can't get ahead without sleeping their way to the top.

Besides, Eric appear to have the personality of Al Gore on anphedimines.

Ah, yes, Burnout Chick Cindy. I only know here from the MTV official Daria website. After I read that, I started noticing her in scenes at the school. She even graduates with Daria, IIRC. The character is based on a former assistant producer of Daria in seasons 1-2 named Carolyn Disher. They never did anything with the character. She was just an in-joke of the producers.

NO WAY are the Fashion Clubbers going to make a porn flick, except in a deliberate parody of the show.

I don't mean anything related to divorce, which would be extreme. Jake and Helen might have big problems over moving, money, hobbies, money, a car accident, money, Daria, money, or maybe even money. Quinn's very charismatic and somewhat manipulative, and she might be able to smooth out wrinkles in a creative fashion, as Daria did.

Well, if you have a good idea for a story, don't let anyone stop you. It just doesn't appeal to me as a good Quinn story.

I plan to keep the tone light and comic, since this is a subject that could easily get way too melodramatic. There will be appearances from every Barksdale and Morgendorffer relative under the sun, including Jake's older brother (Jake's mom mentioned raising "children" so we know he has at least one sibling) who just happens to be a carbon copy of his father. Aunts Amy and Rita, natch, plus a pregnant Erin, both grandmothers, and basically anyone I can think of to add chaos to the mix. All this in the midst of Daria preparing to head off for college.

It'll be a long story, I hope I can finish it!

Regarding Quinn's life after Daria leaves for college, I have this image of Daria calling Quinn to get relationship information, sort of like Daria asking Quinn's opinion on contacts vs. glasses. By her senior year, Quinn will have the entire "relationship thing" down pat (having dated nearly every guy at school), while Daria will still be sorting through the basics in college, away from prying family eyes.

The issue of how the two of them handle dates could be quite funny. Quinn could be a skilled but subtle manipulator, keeping guys at a safe and reasonable distance while keeping them interested in her. She'd have a very good idea of the kind of guy she'd most like to be around. Daria, though, would have more trouble sorting out what she wants in a guy, and little idea of how to maintain the relationship.

I don't think so. Take a look at "One J at a Time". Quinn tried searching for a steady boyfriend with a silly questionaire that was nothing more than a rehash of her old shallow dating attitudes - does the guy have leather interiors in his car, etc. She ended up picking one of the J's by the "eenie meenie miney moe" method.

When she got a crush on David Sorensen in IIFY her approach was still the "couple dates at Chez Pierre" even though she was aware that David was nothing like her usual dating partners. She just didn't know any other way.

Her manipulative powers only work on fairly dopey guys. David was quite immune. Even Kevin Thompson (in "The Lab Brat"), who's exceptionally dopey (and horny), just wasn't interested. In "Daria Dance Party" and OJAAT we saw that even the J's have their limits.

I think Daria has better idea of what she wants, especially after a year with Tom, but it's true that she's liable to blow a few (or a lot) of relationships on the way. Alienating people is a knee-jerk response from Daria. Most guys won't be as tolerant of it as Tom. No reason they should be.

For the fun of debate, it can be argued that Quinn's emotional maturity rises throughout the show's five seasons.

To be fair, that was as good a method as any, considering her subject matter. And her final pick did "know squirrels," which was very useful. [cough]

By the fifth season, Quinn has overcome much of her former rivalry with Daria (refusing to fight with her in "Aunt Nauseum," and helping her in "Through A Lens Darkly" and "Boxing Daria"), and her relationships with her girlfriends are also changing and improving ("Fat Like Me" and "Is It College Yet?"). It seems difficult to imagine that she hasn't also gotten better at handling relationships with boyfriends. Quinn is used as an element of ridicule in numerous episodes, but if given a little benefit of the doubt, it is reasonable to imagine that she's not as predictable in this area as she's painted. It's hard to think that she's unaware, for instance, of the underlying reasons why hormone-drenched male teens like to hang around her, and hard to think she's not figured out dozens of ways of deflecting it and coping with it to keep her life happy.

Daria, even after Tom, strikes me as not particularly adept at maintaining a dating relationship, especially given that she wants to keep her own life (and friendship with Jane) as a higher priority. Daria's not the sort to dump what she's doing to do what any boyfriend wants her to do.

Quinn isn't that sort either, but--just as Helen found Jake, who puts up with her--is more likely than Daria to find a guy who lets her be whatever she wants to be, simply because Quinn is agreeable and socially skilled. Quinn will have a trophy husband, two kids, and a house in an upscale suburb (plus a cushy job directing an international charity) long before Daria goes before a justice of the peace with any guy (with Jane as her bridesmaid). It just strikes me as the logical outcome, given the way the characters are portrayed.

Well, she knows how to keep (some) boys chasing her without "putting out", but she does that by keeping her "relationships" completely superficial and at a great emotional distance. And, as we saw in OJAAT, she just doesn't know any other way.

Whatever difficulties Daria (or Jane before her) had with Tom, Quinn literally can't keep a steady boyfriend for a whole day, even when she tries.

If you're looking for fanfic fodder, think about this: adolescent girls can be just as hormone-drenched as boys. Perhaps Quinn believes (or *knows*) that any guy who gets close to her will talk her into bed and she'll be too damn horny to resist.

What does Quinn really know about a "relationship"? She knows everything there is to know about *dating*, but that's not the same thing. I can see her trying to give advice to Daria, but it just fails every time because Daria doesn't need or want that kind of advice - and what works in high school doesn't necessarily work in college!

Yeah, I'd have to agree with that. Even if they were desperate for money (and if Helen cut off Quinn's allowance, I'd almost expect Linda to increase Sandi's allowance just to rub it in or something), I can think of at least a dozen things they'd do before the very thought of joining the adult video biz even crossed their minds (and at least two dozen if its just Quinn trying to earn money).

As a group, they'd try resurecting their fashion newsletter before anything else. On her own, Quinn would either sell her old clothes or get a job somewhere.

And, as just my personal opinion, I'd probably find either of those more interesting to read than the FC doing porn.

I don't really have any time to go to Fanfiction.net and look over any of the 600+ stories online (As I said, I'm lazy). As for the Star Trek idea, it kinda goes against the mentality of the fanfiction community to do anything related to outer space, let alone Star Trek. And the rare breeds out there (God bless all of them), usually do a space fic that involves more action, explosions, and witty one-liners. Just ask Jason Schiener about "Daria's Guide to the Galaxy", or Mir about "Daria: Space Goddess". I would actually like to see someone do a StarTrek/Daria fic just so we could compare stories. :-)

Excluding the involvement of B&B, having something from Daria's past at Highland come back to haunt her in Lawndale would be lots of fun. Outpost Daria has an extensive set of notes on Daria's appearances in B&B.

And what was Quinn doing all that time in Highland?

It strikes me that the last summer before Daria and Jane go off to college would be rich ground for new fanfics. I'm working through one (much delayed by real life, but still going). Everyone in their families comes to terms with the two friends leaving. If Jane gets into BFAC in the spring, what will she do around Lawndale before leaving for Boston? Will Quinn and Jane find a friendship something like the one Daria had with Jane?

And, of course, there are all the other characters from the series. Is it possible for the Three J's to be developed as their own detailed characters, or the ex-Fashion Club?

Since Daria, Beavis, and Butthead were all in 9th grade, Quinn would have been in 8th grade at the local middle school. But I admit it would be fun to see a fanfic where she interacts with B&B.
