MTV Makes Daria Movie Star

                    Daria, MTV's perpetually-sarcastic, teenage

                    television movie next year. According to Abby

Well, it sounds pretty fun already. However, I am kinda peeved that MTV isn't going to release this at least in limited markets theatrically. I mean, they have everything to gain and nothing to lose by striking a few prints and putting it out. If "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America" could make anywhere from $60 Million to $100 Million US (not sure which figure is correct) they could at least get $20 Million or so they didn't figure on getting if they put it out theatrically. How expensive are a few transfers from D2 to 35MM film? Yeah, I know, they are expensive, but probably about as expensive as the costs to make an episode of Real Hurl or Road Drools or something like that. Maybe if it's REALLY good, MTV and Paramount will make some sort of last-minute decision to put it in theatres like Warner Bros. did with "Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm."

So what should we expect? Probably a fun, if cluttered movie, with tons of different sub-plots to keep track of. Hopefully they'll get a chance to give Carson Daly the treatment he deserves...animate him as a hunchback or something like that. Or have him play some sort of slimeball, which wouldn't be a stretch.

MTV to Broaden Daria Into Animated TV Movie

NEW YORK (Variety) - MTV's animated ``Daria'' is getting her own movie.

The music cable network is in production on ``Is it Fall Yet?'' a film based on the characters from the series. The only animated film on MTV's slate, the Daria project is set to premiere in the fall.

The film, which will focus on what Daria and her pals at Lawndale High are doing over summer vacation, will be ``sort of a continuation of a lot of the plotlines that you see in the series, with added value such as celebrity voice cameos,'' said Abby Terkuhle, president, MTV Animation.

Carson Daly, host of MTV's hit daily show ``Total Request Live,'' has already signed on to lend his voice, as has singer Bif Naked.

Unlike MTV's ``Celebrity Death Match,'' which is being developed as a theatrical release, ``Daria'' will strictly be a TV movie. ``At one point, we talked about making it a theatrical movie, but we think MTV is the right home for it,'' Terkuhle said.

Kinda bummed about it not being a big screen release, but otherwise no real downsde to it.

I've known about this for about an hour now, some things I've noticed/ will guess about the movie:

1) With it airing in Fall 2000, it might be like the X-Files movie where the movie will extend the plotlines gone over in S4 and be a bridge between S4 and S5, and a welcome drought reliever as well.

2) With it being set in summer vacation, it bridges Daria's junior year(S4), and Senior year(S5) perfectly.

3) We should see some great development of some of the more minor characters, Kevin, Brittany, Jodie, Mack, Upchuck, the 3 J's, etc.

4) The plotlines we've seen so far, the D/T 'shipper plot, the Fashion Club supremacy battle, Mystik Spiral, as an up and coming band, the new Jane/Tom relationship, will be developed throughout S4, and some will be resolved somewhat in the movie, probably the FC deal, at least, which I hope because its getting harder to sit and watch Sandi and Quinn try to be civil to each other, that alone made "Just Add Water" hard for me to watch. One thing for sure, IMO, the D/T thing will probably not be resolved in S4 or the movie.

5) Carson Daly? Eh, just as long as they don't go overboard with the celebrity cameos I don't mind them at all.

Just $0.02 worth of my opinion.

A pleasant suprise... would be nice to have a theatrical movie though, and a Downtown TV-movie (yeah, like _that_ would happen... sigh)

Also not too sure about the choice of cameos either, but it'll still be better than the 'fake' movie by far :)

And from a continuity POV this would happen between S4 and S5. I have my doubts this will air before all of S4 does though...

Yeah :( - and definitely!

I figure a slightly-longer than normal review would suffice... it's about as long a 4 episodes put together, and I wouldn't expect a MDRR 4x longer than normal :)

Neither... JA for instance _implied_ the end of the semester was coming up soon. To me odd numbered seasons are fall, and even numbered seasons are spring. This would put the movie right between S4 and S5... a nice fit.

(The fall/spring thing jives with the 2 seasons = 1 year timespan Glenn's mentioned.)

The other thing: I suspect that season 6 (if it'll happen at all, since 513 is ep #65) will hinge on the ratings for this movie. Would be nice to see a season 6 end with a graduation episode, though. :)

My main concern with the movie is, will it promote a "new" Daria to appeal to a larger audience? Will they suddenly force plot lines in to appeal to whatever crowd they're targeting? If it suddenly flops, does that mean the end of Daria? Ok i'm asking too many questions that can't be answered. However, my main concern is MTV changing the nature of the show from the simplicity of a cynical girl with razor sharp wit, to some "cosmo chic" who changes dramatically because she's gonna be up on the big screen and people won't pay to see her otherwise. >:| <takes a deep breath> <end rant>

Other than that I'm looking forward to seeing Daria. Maybe this will appeal to a larger audience without changing the show's nature and boost its ratings. Who knows. :)

(Does anyone else besides me think that Abby's statement, "MTV is the right home for it," is just a euphamism for "we don't think that 'Daria' has big screen appeal, therefore we aren't going to risk money on a theatrical movie"? *sigh* Oh, well... at least being a TV movie lessens the risk that they'll alter the formula in order to appeal to a wide audience, which would turn the parody "Daria: The Movie" into horrid reality...)

That's probably the reason why they've made it a television movie- unlike Beavis and Butt-head they don't think it has that broader "cultural appeal". Personally I think it won't matter where they air it as long as they do it right (ie: more character development, especially with the minor players, some surprises, a decent storyline).

Hey, as long as they don't include Kurt "King-o-Smarm" Loder, I'm cool with Carson. (Is it me, or does anyone else think that Kurt needs a nice, gentle little pimp slap now & again?)

(Note: in light of the recent arrest of an AOL subscriber who posted a threatening message to a Columbine HS student, I just want to make clear that the previous statement is NOT a threat, & it is NOT meant to be a threat, and that I am in no way encouraging anyone to commit any acts of violence against Mr. Loder or anyone else. OKAY? Good.)

Now that we finally have the movie in the works, when can we expect the soundtrack? And who/which songs will appear on it? {Insert subtle hint to include that Komeda song from "The Big House"} Will there be Mystik Spiral masterpieces on it? (I know this seems premature, but I've been hoping for a Daria soundtrack since "Road Worrier.") Meanwhile, I'll start stocking up on videotapes -- heaven knows I'll probably wear out any tapes of this movie the way I've done with all my episode tapes.

Think of it as a REALLY big season 4 finale. ;-) The nice thing is that it'll help ease folks through the Drought, too... considering that it's scheduled for Fall, 2000, that implies late September-late December. Heh, if they aired it in November, it might even keep the despairs of every late November from sneaking up on us, unawares, and break up that Loooong Drought.
