I used to be, in high school. For real. Had the full all-black wardrobe going (for when we were allowed to dress in regular clothes as well as for when I wasn't in class), the mopey frown, was withdrawn from most of my schoolmates (all except from my friends), had my hair in my face, that whole deal.
Kinda weird to know that AND know that I was an extracurricular demon like Jodie. Fer real. Even was a vice-president of a club...senior year, Students Against Driving Drunk. AND a member of the National Honors Society. AND took all the honors and advanced courses I could take.
It would be ironic were it not for the fact that two of the other five or so goths in my class were honors students as well.
(p.s.: I kinda looked like a combo of Daria and Andrea in high school. Imagine that. Then imagine that in an Actual School Uniform [used to wear the skirts most of the time]. Weird.)

Visigoths were a type of Goth, in the original sense of the word. IIRC the Goths and the Vandals were two of the "barbarian" tribes that wrecked the Roman Empire, and so gave their names to barbaric or unpopular-with-the-establishment types generally. Arthur Dent's reference to visigoths is a way of showing that he understands the dual meaning of the term "vandal".

Actually the Hitchhiker's books are becoming quite popular among Science Olympiad this year, a bunch of the freshman have read them. Gives us something to quote besides "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Now if only Mrs Slattery hadn't decided to stop letting us write quotes on the board. She comes back from having a baby and decides she has to be like responsible or something.
