season 6??

Wasn't there supposed to be an announcement about season 6 by the end of January?

Well apparently it was to be revealed through Toon magazine issue 24... which is cool for US folks, but what about the rest of the world??? Can someone please fill us in?

I think it's pretty obvious it's not a simple cancellation, as that wouldn't be such an amazing big surprise.

Agreed. So...

given that Daria is not really a good fit for MTV's style these days as a regular program, IMHO...

and given that -- despite this -- it appears to have a fairly good fan base that refuses to be driven off by often pre-empted, random re-runs and the overall goofiness seen on the channel othertimes...

and given that we've seen recent ancillary products, like Daria's Inferno and the dayplanning software, demonstrating that SOMEONE thinks the concept and characters are viable...

and given that IIFY appears to have been worth it's investment -- they showed it enough times...

I'm imagining they're planning a series of movies, a la the Star Trek franchise. (The comparison of the programs and the fan bases are not as far-fetched as it may seem at first.)

The programmers' thinking is this:

The numbers don't justify taking up space in the weekly schedule -- especially given the turnaround time animation requires -- but they do justify programming features as a special event....

features that would do nicely as home video product in their own right, for sale or rental. They would be written to be self contained plots, driving a larger continuity. And as an added bonus, one would only have to pay the voice talent for ONE performance per movie....especially handy for managing the cost of scale extras.

Interesting speculation. Tiny Toon Adventures tried something like this and it worked pretty well for a few years.

My personal bet, however, is on a network switch. My pick for most likely candidate ... Comedy Central.

Of course we could both be right, with Daria becoming a series of original movies to air on VH1.

Remember, Daria is owned completely by MTV/Viacom. It would only be moved to a network owned by Viacom, such as CBS, VH1, etc.

VH1 goes after an older audience, though.

I've thought of this, UPN? They're already showing other MTV shows, Celebrity Deathmatch and the Real World, why not Daria? I could see it easily garnering the ratings around 2 or 3 which is exceptional for UPN.

The movies idea is a pretty valid one as well,, but I wouldn't see it going to VH1, if that were to occur, it'd probably stay on MTV.

I'd lean more towards the network switch, it would mean more eps per season and not as long of a wait bewteen seasons.

At the very least it's that the rights for syndication have been sold and will start after S5.

UPN is a reasonable possibility. They got burned last season by Dilbert, however, which might put them off cynical, crudly-drawn (not a cut to Daria's animators, but the style is deliberately "crude") animated shows. Comedy Central, however (which is listed as a Viacom property on the Viacom website) has had some good experiences with this (The Critic, Dr. Katz).

There's also some doubt whether UPN is going to survive another season. Of course, that might actually make in more likely that Viacom is ordering s6 as a lame-duck series to fill half an hour on UPN until they can kill the network.

Mostly, I don't want it to be UPN because our local UPN affiliate dropped the network last season.

Yeah, probably. I was thinking of VH1's "Rock'n'roll Picture Show" programming, but come to think of it more original movies show on MTV than VH1.
