Well, with the ending of Daria coming closer and closer, it's time to think of what us fans would do if given some input into the show :) Realistic suggestions please ^_^ Some of mine...
-Trent sits down and writes a brilliant song. A local radio station starts playing it, and it turns into the breakout song for Mystic Spiral. It's about a shy teen girl who falls for a musician who's not good enough for her.
-Jane decides to skip higher education and go off to NYC to try and make a living with her art. She's picked up by the other artist she's going to be sharing a loft with: the bi chick from the movie ^_^
-Kevin gets a football scholarship at a major university, but Brittiny can't get into that school. Will he pick her or his sport? He picks football.
-We actualy hear both Daria and Quinn say "I love you" to somebody.
For curiosity's sake, I'm wondering if there -could- be imput. In other words, has the Daria staff ever mentioned that they have made changes to shows in the second half of a season based on reactions to the first half? Since there is such a lag time between halves, it seems possible.
1. The lag may be due entirely to the animation; the scripts and voice acting may have been completed long before.
2. Even if they had, their lawyers wouldn't let them admit it, for fear of lawsuits. ("Hey, I posted an idea about Trent making a video, and in one ep he made a video! You stole my idea!") Even if the suit fails the laugh test, the litigation could halt production for months. For that reason among others, no one connected with a show will have a public presence on any unmoderated forum (for very long, anyway; the Babylon 5 guy tried it briefly).
What drove B5 creator JMS into a moderated group was mostly trolls. However, he did have to throw out a completed script because some fan posted a story idea that was too close to what JMS was going to do. After two years of work by the fan to help provide enough legal paperwork to satisfy Warner Brothers, JMS was able to use the story in one of the later seasons.
You're right ... it was mostly "other" reasons he bailed ... the "story ideas" thing was mostly a cover story, since the unmoderated group was remarkably disciplined for Usenet, trolls and cyberstalkers excepted.
I doubt there are many cases of "you stole my idea"; everyone mentions Marion Zimmer Bradley, but I can't recall any others of note. (Besides which, what makes good stories isn't ideas but execution.) However, the mere threat sends lawyers into apoplectic fits -- or Pavlovian salivation -- and the consequences are a nightmare most creators don't want to deal with.
I wonder why people mention Marion Zimmer Bradley in connection with the "you stole my idea" complaint. Could somebody please give me some background info?
I just did a used-to-be-Deja search and found this at rec.arts.sf.written, from the person in question:
"Here's what happened. It _was_ fanfic, but published under MZB's more or less aegis as a permitted issue of MOON PHASES (Nina Boal, editor). It was a book entitled MASKS set entirely within Darkover.
I received a letter offering me a sum and a dedication for all rights to the text. I attempted at that point to _very politely_ negotiate a better deal. I was told that I had better take what I was offered, that much better authors than I had not been paid as much (we're talking a few hundred dollars here) and had gotten the same sort of 'credit' (this was in the summer of 1992).
At that point I did not threaten any sort of suit whatsoever; in fact, a few months later I received a letter from Ms. Bradley's lawyer threatening me with a suit should I be a bit too frank about Ms. Bradley's um, writing methods, and who her current collaborators were at the time (at least that is how I took the lawyer's phrasing). Ooh boy, that sounds like a real bad case. I'm glad I never had to deal with that kind of problem in my fanfics -- then again, all of my fanfics have been based on television series (and one of them is a Daria fanfic), so I seriously doubt the creators of the two series I've written fanfic for would have any reason to try to sue ME. What good would THAT do them? Not much, I suspect.
Whereas the Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics and half-a-dozen writers make daily appearances in the rec.arts.comics.marvel.* newsgroups. Is TV more prone to litigation then printed media?
Mack and Jodie actually get something to do for a change.
Andrea gets to say something.
- Quinn and Daria tell each other how much they love each other. Helen opens up to Daria and tells her how proud she is of her. Jake says something totally profound.
- Jane and Daria experience the possibility of splitting up. Daria is forced to face the brand new world of college alone.
-Tom and Daria break up (although this might happen before the season finale)
-Daria kisses Trent
-Kevin and Brittany break up. Brittany starts to use her brain.
-Jodie tells her folks to go to....well, you know.
-The newspapers tell us Glenn has a change of heart and we're actually getting a sixth season!
(Ok. That was not realistic. But the head can't control the heart all the time.)
Jake lands a deal marketing Coca Cola to the third world
- Daria wakes up on Beavis & Buthead's couch... oh no! It was all a dream! "Hey, Diarhoaa! Who's this Tom you keep calling for in yer sleep? hehehe hehehehe hehe hehehehehehehe"

A final episode which featured Beavis and Butthead would be great, and bring the whole story full circle. They could draw Daria like she looked in B&B too.
OK so she wakes up and realises it was all just a dream, and walking home she bumps into someone and when she looks up we see it's Trent. She mumbles sorry and starts to walk on and then thinks, "that guy is pretty cool", and on an impulse chases after him and says "Hey, do you want to go for some pizza?"
The closing credits start to roll as we see them stroll off into the sunset...

There's a story on Outpost Daria that has Brock and Trent as half-brothers (and Sandi is related to both of them!) Personally, I just wonder if Brock is Trent on uppers, or if Trent is Brock on downers...
Hey, at least Jessy, James, and Meowth really care about one another, deep down ... but then, it's now established that Quinn really does like Sandi, so who knows? :)
Nope. I'd like to see Quinn do better than be "president" of that lot. Something that Sandi would really hate and could do nothing about.

It's a shame they can't do another season or two by sending Daria and Jane to college, maybe with Daria living with Aunt Amy (to save money of course). A whole new cast of characters. Maybe with Kevin (on that football scholarship, heh) and occasionally the rest of the Morgendorffers when needed.
I'd love to see Daria have to deal with not being the only "brain" around. It might not be what she thinks.
If only I were Bill Gates, I'd finance a couple of seasons, and let the production company put episodes out only when they felt it was right.

Leave all of the old cast behind and start clean with a new one.
Daria, Trent and the rest of the Lanes can make cameos once in a great while, but that's about as far as it goes.
Or, maybe Quinn could have her own show, I could see it happening now, especially with all the changes in Season 5.
So what you are hoping they do is pull the exact same lame cliche hundreds of other high school shows have gone for? Do you really want to watch DARIA turn into SAVED BY THE BELL: THE COLLEGE YEARS?

On the other hand, they've done a pretty good job with the high school years. Consider what "Saved by the Bell-The College Years" was spawned from, and what "Daria-The College Years" would be spawned from.
What I'd like to see is a spinoff of Mystik Spiral. Easily some of the funniest moments in S4 and S5 originated with interactions within Mystik Spiral. Imagine a new-millenium "Monkees" with more than a little B&B-style stoopidity and you get the idea. It would be hilarious!
I would settle for this to be a web cartoon, but a real televised spinoff would be best. Too bad Glenn says the chances for this idea working out are slim and none.
