Actualy I don't think they are. To be preps one has to care about grades to an extent, poces basic intelect, and make good impressions with teachers. Jodi for isntance, it a prep, the fashion club isn't. To them intelgence, and grades are a sad little thing htat get in the way of their quest for the perfect outfit.
thats a suckup

"Prep", from "preppie", from "prepratory".
One who comes from the prepratory school system, such as Phillips Andover/ Phillips Exeter, or the Dana Hall School. These are prestigious private high schools primarily for rich people. They do have some scholarships, which is why I know people who've gone to those schools: my friends HATED prep school.
Or, more generally, one who shares the attitudes, fashions, and culture promulgated in such schools.
Basically, a preppie is a larval stage yuppie.

So? They have the legal and moral right to live their lives however they feel they want to. Remember the conversation Daria and Jodi had outside of school in "Gifted"?

You do realize they don't exist, don't you? Cuz arguing about their rights can get weird. Not that that's bad. Maybe I should bring it up in German, where we get into more off topic discussions than any newsgroup....

That's not really the point. There is a tendency among Daria fans to think that the message of the show is for unpopular people to turn the tables and treat popular people the same way they've always been treated.
People need to realize:
Being smart, not caring about fashion, or being unpopular does not make you any better than someone who is different.

Hmm. I think that if you aren't swayed by what everyone else is doing, saying or wearing, it _does_ make you better, but being better than someone elses does NOT give you the right to treat them badly. There is usually a reason for people desperately wanting to "fit in," this could be that they are just weak, or that they can't cope with being ostracized. For example, a few years ago I made friends with some losers that noone liked. Everyone stopped talking to me. I soon discovered that there was a reason noone talked to these girls: they were dumb bitches. I couldn't stop hanging around with them 'cos noone else woild talk to me, but eventually I risked it, being unable to stand exile, and stopped talking to them. After this, I now have all my old friends back and I will now do just about anything to fit in with everyone else.

If you are totally happy being like everyone else, why are you better than someone who is more of an individual. There are way too many people out there who are hurting inside because they try to be like everyone else, and they need help. But many people are quite happy being a "conformist" or whatever, and that is no reason to think someone else is better than them.
<snipped a personal account>
I believe there is something wrong with people who have to look to others to find out what they want to do or how they want to act. Pesonally, I do what I want, dress the way I want, and totally disregard anything anyone says about it because I don't care. I value my opinion higher than others because I am more harsh on myself then anyone else would or should be.

That could be true. But there could also be the argument that since we are, by instinct, social beings, that there is something wrong with people who DON'T do what it takes to be accepted.

Exactly. You are happy being yourself. Other people are happy conforming. No reason any way of life is better than the other.

I don't think any reasonable Daria fan could think that. In "Gifted" we saw that intellectuals can be just as cliquey and snotty as anyone in the fashion club. We also saw that Daria, from her outsider's viewpoint, was just as contemptuous of intellectual snobbery as as she is any other kind. I can't think of a single example, from both seasons of Daria, of Daria doing anything to anyone who didn't have it coming. Daria exhibits an admirable degree of tolerance toward all people, with the possible exception of her sister. She recognizes the poseurs and idiots of the world, but she doesn't do anything overt to change them. She simply accepts them as part of an imperfect world. I think in this she makes a good role model for all people, even the ones who need makeup really badly.
