What do Daria fans watch when there's no Daria?

In case anyone was wondering what sort of things can be found on Channel 5 in the UK other than Daria, I've just been inspired by the recent warez discussions to indulge in a little piracy and made a realvideo clip about treasure maps and pirates of the old-fashioned kind from today's edition of Beachcomber Bay. Track number 4 on my jukebox will take you there: http://www.xerez.demon.co.uk/g15/jukebox.htm This totally gratuitous clip shows the awesomely cute Casey-Lee Jolleys making a treasure map for her old sea dog and his albatross with the help of a pot of tea. One thing that struck me about the scene was that although the programme is (probably) aimed at very young children, it has a wonderfully meditative soundtrack; this show seems to be from an altogether other world.

Unless you have a wonderful connection you'll probably find you get you get long pauses, as despite reducing the image size to a minuscule (but very cute) 160x128, I still had to use the 56K ISDN setting to get a decent picture and clear sound. (But look at it this way: at half a megabyte a second, there's no way the original 352x288 MPEG2 file would have streamed even over an ADSL connection! Has a nice stereo soundtrack though...)

Until I uploaded this clip I wasn't sure that Demon would stream video as well as realaudio but it looks like they do (it worked for me anyway, albeit with long pauses for buffering).

And before anyone asks, no I don't plan on streaming Daria episodes any time soon! (Demon Homepages don't provide the bandwidth for anything other than tiny clips of things anyhow.) I'll be concentrating exclusively on video snippets from shows so obscure that their makers would probably be pleased to have their existence brought to the attention of the living.

Ahhh...Powerpuff Girls. What a fine show. It has the greatest cartoon villian EVER- Him (he's so evil that no one can speak his name), a lobsterlike guy with a high, echo-ey voice, tall high-heeled boots, and a fabulous furry coat/dress thing with pink fluff at the bottom. I mean, how many kids shows have a cross-dressing omnipitent lobster as a villian? He's fab.

And it's got Buttercup. She kicks so much ass. Make a better leader than Blossom, I think. Buttercup's strong, feisty, and plays bass...she rawks!

It's supposedly geared towards kids...but there are so many things in there that a little kid would never get.

I doubt they'll touch it, as they probably see it as a "kiddie cartoon". Then again, I don't think there's anything to be cut. Though it is surprisingly violent, considering. Moral too, in as much as "Anyone who commits a crime will be beaten up and sent to prison. And we mean /anyone/." Thinking of two episodes in particular: the one where the clown turns into a mime, and the father's day golf clubs story. Not sure if C5 have shown those yet, but keep an eye out for them.

Well, they managed to cut Daria, which *they* see as a kiddie cartoon, judging by the slots it has occupied.

I think I agree; I wonder if C5 will.

"Mime for a Change" is possibly my favourite episode.

Makes me think of what Channel 4 are doing to the Buffy tVS spinoff Angel; it's being broadcast at 6pm, heavily cut. A C4 spokesperson said it was because a lot of younger viewers liked it, so they put it in an early timeslot. Thing is, kids like it because it's for grown ups; the same reason kids like South Park, amd no 17 year old actually reads "Just 17".

Then again, I can never tell if things have been cut, unless it's blindingly obvious (like a sudden jump).

Don't remind me. One of the local stations around here actually started censoring Bugs Bunny cartoons. BUGS BUNNY! They removed any scene in which someone got shot or blown-up. In "Prince Varmint", Yosemite Sam is piling explosives on the castle drawbridge, and then he's staggering around smoldering for no apparent reason. And the "Duck Season, Rabbit Season" cartoon was even worse. They cut to a still of Bugs looking smug whenever Daffy got shot by Elmer. Blasphemy!

Not really - Cartoon Network shows all of the old Warner Brothers cartoons in their entirety. I have most of them on tape, including many where Daffy's bill gets shot off...

Pinky and the Brain, I loved that show. Are they still making new episodes of that? I loved the election one, it basically says the most people would vote for a cabbage (or a mouse) if it was running for on their party's platform. And lets not forget Dexter's Lab. I love it's parodies of Anime

Unfortunately, Warner Brothers killed it. The storyline was that the lab was closed-down and someone was hunting Brain. (They only did two episodes that actually dealt with The Circle, they were a faction of the government who wanted to use Brain to conquer the world themselves.) P & tB were forced to take refuge in a pet store, where they were purchased by...Elmyra. This was the backstory for the final season, called "Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain". The stories were severely dumbed-down, and when it was finally cancelled it was pretty much a mercy-killing. <Sob>

It's still quite PG. There are just little things (Him, Sedusa) that your average 6-year-old wouldn't understand.

As far as what I watch goes, ABC TV in Australia screen the fantastic British claymation "The Trap Door" after Daria - think HP Lovecraft starring Norman Wisdom. And "South Park" is a favourite. Also "Aeon Flux", "Gunsmith Cats", "The League of Gentlemen" ...

Like all good animations it features great voice actors with interesting accents and engaging characters. Others classics that spring to mind are the Clangers (also stop motion animation, only featuring knitted models (and apparently they talk like Alli)), Magic Roundabout (UK translation only - apparently the original French version lacks the sardonic script and droll personalities), and more recently Insektors (silicon graphics animation made in Luxembourg I think), and Plasmo (Australian, another claymation, currently still mentioned on my TV page, though it seems to have been cancelled mid-rerun).

Very weird BBC series, sadly I missed most of it but I'm sure it'll be shown again. Hard to describe ... very other worldy, a psychotic soap. I'm surprised it's made it outside the UK actually, it strikes me as the sort of quintessential English stuff that gets a cult following here but leaves outsiders scratching their heads and saying "huh?" (Mind you the same could be said for Monty Python of course.)
