However, I would like to know the difference between fantasizing about a cartoon and fantasizing about a real human being. Is fantasizing about a real person somehow more valid because s/he is flesh and blood? Is it anymore pathetic to fantasize about say, Britney Spears, than it is to fantasize about a cartoon character? Both are equally unavailable and are equally part of a person's imagination and fantasy. Does the three-dimensional factor really make that huge of a difference?

Not really. Indeed, one should consider that a character played by a live actress *isn't* the actress, any more than Daria is Tracy Grandstaff. Furthermore, even when an actress is being interviewed, she frequently says whatever she thinks will advance her career, rather than reveal her real personality. This is *more* the case with pop idols like Britney Spears (who get fantasized about the most) than with competent than minor actresses like Ms. Grandstaff, incidentally.
Daria is as "real" as any of the characters on *Dawson's Creek* (and IMHO better written). Fantasizing about her makes as much or as little sense as fantasizing about any other fictional person.

I have absolutely no idea, as compared to fantasizing about characters played by live actresses. My point was simply that cartoon characters are every bit as "real" (which is to say, *un*-real) as any other fictional characters ... in other words, I don't think the medium is all that relevant. It was an aesthetic point, not a moral one.

I do think, though, that what makes Daria attractive is more her personality than she looks. She's physically attractive in her own way, of course, but if you want sex appeal you'd go for Brittany.

That said, I'm sure there are also plenty of women who fantasize about certain fictional men (Eg. I'm sure there are Trent fantasies somewhere out there...). Whether that says anything about their attitude towards men, I don't know either. And I haven't even mentioned the fantasies that women have about other women, and/or the fantasies that men have about other men.
IMO, as long as you don't hurt anyone, you're free to fantasize about anything you like.

My only objection to this whole nude Daria thing is that she's not 18 yet (is she?). That's naughty! Er, actually I guess as long as you're fantasizing you could always fantasize that she's 18. Personally I have to say those pictures didn't do anything for me, either aesthetically or uh... the other thing. Fantasizing is really annoying to me, because I have to imagine a whole scenario wherby sexual intercourse can become possible. For me this is easier to do with people who are three-dimensional and even easier when I've actually seen them in person. Easiest of all is if you know them really well, but then afterwards it can be awkward speaking to them again:
"Hey uh, that was really great having sex with you last night... um, I mean it was nice seeing you at that party the other night." "Excuse me?" "Nothing, nothing. Freudian slip." "A Freudian slip is when you accidentally subsitute one word for another that sounds like it, and it's supposed to be a momentary slip-up of the ego in keeping the id in check, allowing unconscious desires or feelings to be expressed unintentionally by the speaker." "Your point being?" "You just said something about having sex with me and then paused for three whole seconds, and then mumbled something about the party the other night. That's not a Freudian slip, that's just insane." "Look, are we going to have sex or not? 'Cause neither one of us is getting any younger just standing here." "Actually, no, I have to go now. Thanks for the offer though, it's very sweet of you to offer me your body like that. Why don't you call me sometime when the medication wears off and you regain some kind of grip on reality?"

Yeah actually it is the same in the UK.....at 16 you can get yourself a partner of the opposite sex (gays/lesbians have to wait till 18, why I have no idea because in some ways this involves less risk than straight sex :) ), and do whatever comes natural, but you have to do it with the lights out because it is illeagal to watch :) It is pretty stupid actually, probably stems from when the age was 18 or 21 and they adgusted one down but not the other.....
Phill.
We just had something weird come out of Michigan in the last month or two... a 20-something guy was dating a 17-year-old girl, and having consensual sex with her, even to the point of no objections from her parents (don't know whether they were engaged or not...)
Anyhoo, the guy got arrested for child pornography because he took some nude photos of her, with her consent (she admitted she agreed to it in court!). The way the Michigan law reads, is that it is an offense to use any materials brought across state lines in the production of child pornography. The photo paper was made out-of-state, so he was automatically guilty.
Really strange... kinda remids me of all those porn movies that Traci Lords made while she was 14 and 15 years old... as far as I'm concerned, those are NOT kiddie porn, because the girls knew DAMN well what she was doing!
Well, in our society is minor is considered to not be able to reliably know whether they're being exploited or not. This makes sense for little kids ... I don't care whether a 7-year-old "agrees" to have sex (take pictures, whatever) or not, an adult who puts them in that position is still a perv and belongs in jail.
Whether this distinction is really meaningful for teenagers is a different question. To some extent it is ... I don't want 16 year olds in bordellos, even in areas where prostitution is legal. Likewise I don't think we as a society have a compelling need for 15 year old strippers or (sorry) porn stars. On the other hand, when pornography is being produced strictly for private use between two persons of legal age, there's a serious right-to-privacy question that comes up.
It gets even weirder. In many places you can marry (with parental consent) at a significantly younger age than is legal for non-marital sex. In such cases a husband taking pictures of his underaged-but-legal wife is subject to child porn prosectution. I remember reading that this actually happened, I think in Canada. This is, of course, extremely troubling.
Chris McCubbin said:
This was probably also the case in Michigan. In most states, 17-year-olds can marry with parental consent. (In fact, I think the age of marriage with parental consent is as low as 14 in a couple of states).

Could this be a result of Western interference? Unless I'm mistaken, earlier sexual maturation in children is (at least partially) due to improvements in nutrition. Perhaps in this case, food imported or donated from other countries is causing girls to menstruate at a younger age, when their bodies just can't handle a pregnancy. And the men don't know that what they're doing is wrong, they are simply following tradition. What do you think?

That's really horrible. What's worse is that 17 is probably over the age of consent in Michigan, so he probably wasn't even aware that he did anything illegal. Even if the judge is sane enough to give him a suspended sentence, this poor guy is going to have a felony conviction hanging over his head for the rest of his life (which among other things is going to blight both his future and his girlfriend's, assuming they stay together).
It's law enforcement like this, at the same time that known murderers serve only a few years for their crimes, that make me despair as to the sanity of our system sometimes.
Sincerely Yours, Jordan
No I didn't think so, but I will share it anyway,
I suppose Governor Engler could give him clemency and a pardon but I kinda doubt he would do that, he doesn't seem bound by any sort of logic. Did anyone in Michigan actually vote for him? Did anyone vote period? How the hell does a guy like that get elected to Public office?
This reminds me of a dumb thing that happened here in Canada a number of years ago, I would have been in grade 7, Basically a group of girls decided to take some Polaroid's of each other and give them to their boyfriends, I think they were 13-14, Okay, Inappropriate, but harmless kids stuff, well it seems the parents of one of the boys found the pictures and called the police, the girls admitted exactly what they did, and I doubt they knew they were doing something wrong, This really shouldn't have left the families, well the local juvenile crown prosecutor decided to prosecute the girls with production of child pornography, they were convicted, and sentenced to one hour of probation by the judge who saw this for the harmless teeny BS it was now these girls are forever considered pedophiles.
See, Canadians can be just as absurdian as Americans, fortunately because of the Young Offenders Act their names are kept secret and this was only covered by the local media in the vaguest fashion.
However, if it turns out this guys girlfriend is a cartoon, I say fry him, I know Michigan hasn't executed anyone since 1846 but cartoon perverts must be killed!

And what about all those artistic photos of nude chubby little babies?
At a minimum, I rather suspect this soured the friendship between that guy and that girl.
I personally think the judge should have just refused to hear the case. Why even waste court time on this nonsense? What's next ... sexual harassment suits for boys who kiss girls in school? (Oh wait, that already happened).

That would be pathetic. If you feel guilty for your own thoughts, you need a therapist. The whole point in fantasizing is trying out things you would never want in real life. Anonymous studies show that many (most?) normal people have weird/perverted/sick sexual fantasies sometimes. A lot of people have very extreme S&M fantasies even though they don't enjoy enduring or inflicting pain. It's like playing the game Carmageddon. Millions do it but they'd never go out and kill real people.
So your point is that you lack imagination. That is sad. I guess you have to stick with porn movies that relieve you of the burden of creating your own scenario. My position is the exact opposite. I'm the creative type. I enjoy building the scenario, imagining conversations and the whole surroundings much more than what you would probably call "the good part".
You seem to have a serious problem. Even in your own mind you are bound by the rules of the society you grew up in. You should not let real life considerations dictate your thoughts. It's enough if they dictate your actions. If you can't be free in your own mind, what freedom do you have then?

Yeah I have found, personally at least that if I'm really wound up with someone or something a couple of hours on Doom/Quake/Carmageddon/whatever violent game will actually help, because it helsp release that anger in a way that doesn't hurt anyone. Not doing this can lead to the anger or whatever building up inside youto the point where it can trigger a crazed killing spree in real life......which we wouldn't want to happen, so yes I could very well believe that games/videos like that actually have a positive effect.....but as usual their critics are looking for a scapegoat, something to blame, because they don't want to face real facts.....but I'll leave it as an exersise to the reader to discuss :)

Bands like Ministry and KMFDM kind of blurred the line between Metal and Industrial but they still stuck with the usual Industrial formula; industrial noises (metal on metal, drills, jackhammers, etc.) along with very repetitive and mechanical rythyms.

No offense to those who do indulge in such activities. It's perfectly fine of course. But to make a generalization that if someone doesn't do these things means they're somehow "uncool" is just bullshit. I'm just sick of people thinking that all college kids are somehow indulgent little brats who care more about how they're going to get laid than their next report card.

The wildest thing I've ever done period in my life was go to Dallas to see a band I've been hugely obsessed with since 1991. That and ride some of the rides at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

Tell me about it. It's not so bad here in the US where I don't really have that many social contacts. Back in Kuala Lumpur, pretty much everyone I know who's 20 and single are out partying the night away. Which wouldn't be so bad if some of them weren't into the drug scene as well. Malaysia is pretty much a decade behind the U.S. in most respects, and the "rave culture" has just decided to hit our shores full blast. Ecstasy, weed, you name it. And it isn't even a hidden underground thing anymore. The really scary thing is that it's *mainstream* now. Pretty much *any* club that wants some business allows it.
Dancing is fine. Drinking alcohol (in moderate amounts) is fine. Having fun is fine. But doing drugs? I don't think so.

Not necessarily. It could be just stuff that you can't do in real life. When my available options for sexual pleasure consist solely of masturbation, I stick pretty much to squeezing my eyes shut and thinking really hard of a girl. Boring? Maybe, but it does the job for me.
Anonymous studies show that many (most?) normal
I don't really understand that. If you don't want to get beaten with a leather strap or something, why would you want to make believe it was happening to you? That's like meta-masochism or something! I dunno, I guess I'm just not very imaginative when it comes to sex, it pains me to admit. Most weird sex stuff isn't at all repulsive to me, it's just not interesting. I don't know why. It's how I am and that has never bothered me.
Quite the contrary. If you look at what I wrote, that conclusion simply does not follow. Are you just upset that I didn't like your pictures? Because I think they were very well done, they just weren't appealing to me, personally. You're certainly a better artist than I am. Please don't take all this the wrong way and think I'm only patronizing you. I'm just trying to be nice, I swear!

I go through phases. Sometimes I look at porno, sometimes I only want to use my own imagination. Actually I usually still have to use my imagination because mostly what I do is surf around looking for pictures. I wouldn't say I look at porn movies with any kind of regularity. If I'm flipping channels and I come across something interesting, well hey, you know? But I've never paid money to see one. I try to live by Henry Rollins' credo: "Sex, drugs, and office supplies should never be paid for."
That's what I do. All I meant was that this is an annoyingly time-consuming process. Again, I'm being rather tongue-in-cheek here.
This phenomenon has absolutely nothing to do with society, rules, or societal rules. If you know someone, it's easier to imagine what they would say or do in a given situation. Also, it's easier to picture someone in your mind when you've actually seen them in real life. It's perfectly possible to have a fantasy about a cartoon but to me it doesn't seem as real. It's all a matter of degree. The degree to which a cartoon fantasy is separated from reality is higher than that of a fantasy about someone who is real, and so on. And reality is, I have to admit, my ultimate preference. As I said, those kinds of fantasies (i.e. sexual) are for me, just temporary substitutes when the real thing is unavailable for one reason or another. So they serve a strictly utilitarian purpose, I suppose. I've never really thought about it this much before. Simply put, I prefer to have fantasies which are at least remotely possible. This is more enjoyable to me. Ok, this is way too serious for me. My brain hurts now. Hope you're satisfied! :P
Nobody liked my little conversation, then? I thought it was pretty funny! Oh well, at least I amuse myself.

I can only repeat my computer games example. If you don't like killing people in real life, why do you do it on the computer? I don't really know.

Tastes differ. And after all, there is much more to life than sex. I don't enjoy watching sports or talk shows, you don't enjoy fantasizing about weird sex. As long as the reason is not a feeling of guilt, it's perfectly ok.
Nope. I got enough positive feedback on my pictures to last a lifetime. It's just that your message made me believe you had been brainwashed by a puritan upbringing. THAT is something that upsets me. Glad to hear it was just a joke.

I never understood that, I mean we're all human right and we all have two arms, two legs (ok in general we do !), we all have the same bits under the clothes, and in some cases your imagination can make up far worse than what it has seen for cirtain. Hell I and my parents never went for this 'you should never be seen nude by each other thing' hell my mother and I don't have a problem even today, and I'm gonna be 31 on the 21st and she's in her 60's :) (ok that's prolly more info than the group needed but what the hell).
Phill.
Well then again, I am an American. And we are notoriously sexually hung-up. Hell, I *wish* my parents had frantically avoided letting me see them naked. I mean, who wants to see that, anyway? Yeesh.
This is all relative of course. I mean, is there anything inherently bad about being sexually repressed? Maybe, maybe not. I can't say I really see any qualitative difference. The only thing that really matters is one's personal level of comfort. As long as I'm not hurting anybody, and I'm not feeling uncomfortable or emotionally disturbed about anything, why should it matter to you or anyone else whether I'm repressed and to what degree? Culturally speaking, Americans might be less comfortable with nudity than other people, but can we make a value judgment that this is somehow "bad" or "good"? I don't think that necessarily follows. What you call "puritan brainwashing" is just your negative judgment based on your own cultural bias. You're as much the product of your culture as everyone else is of theirs. So therefore, neener neener.

I'm not sure it's possible to equivalise US and UK exam systems. I think maybe their SATs are similar to our SATs, but their purpose seems to be different, I think they use their SAT scores as a substitute for our GCSEs and A-Levels, whereas here SATs seem to be disposable things which just give an interim measure of progress until you take your real exams. Also in America sporting prowess seems to be considered an alternative indicator of academic ability, which is something I've never managed to get my head around.
-Shez.
...everybody look at the pencils go 'round...
Okay, coming out of my self-imposed sabbatical to answer this...here's a breakdown of some of the important US schoolkids' tests and what they mean so you will be able to discern for yourself...
"midterms" = exams taken in the middle of the term, or in the middle of the semester; usually reserved for upperclassmen in high school and lowerclassmen in college (erm, university) "finals" = final exams for a particular class; the grades gleaned from within are usually worth 20% of the class's semester grades, with 40% going to the total grade worth of each of the two quarters (or halves of a semester) (at least this is how my high school grades were figured) "SAT's" = a standardized national test taken by every high school junior/senior who plans on going on to college that's supposed to measure one's aptitude in math and english and thusly qualify them for a range of schools (erm, universities or colleges) "ACT's" = another standardized national test, this one's not mandatory for college-bound high schoolers like the SAT's are but it's more rigorous and its scores can land one into more prestigious schools (erm, I'm sure you know what I mean by this)
There are also... "PSAT's" = just what you might be guessing, the "pre-SAT's", designed to predict one's performance on the SAT's as well as entitle certain high scorers to recognition and/or scholarship under the "National Merit Scholar"/"National Hispanic Merit Scholar" program (I was a National Hispanic Merit Scholar and a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship) "high school entrance exams" = well, high school entrance exams. Every non-public high school-bound 8th grader has to pay some small fee like $10 in order to secure a seat to take this exam, which could not only gain the 8th grader approval for entrance into the specific school but also class positioning (e.g. whether one gets into the honors track or not) and possibly even little scholarships (I remember my high school entrance exam day...had Elton John's "The One" and Duran Duran's "Last Chance on the Stairway" stuck in my head at the same time...must've worked because I got in, got into honors track, and even got a scholarship)
And no, unlike some people's rantings, all athletes do NOT get a free ride on these types of things...in the low-performing school districts, yeah, but not in most public school districts (or else they would be exposed by local media and would then be publically humiliated) and all non-public school districts (because they don't *have* to keep the students on). I don't remember any of my athlete classmates getting to skip out on a test, quiz, major project, or anything else because they were athletes...the only things they got were delays in taking exams because of forced absence due to some tournament...and even then they ended up having to take a different exam before a specified date, after school. And in fact every athlete at my school was such because they wanted to play sports, not because they wanted a free ride scholastically. So please don't believe that load of bunk someone foisted on you.
*whew* That was long. Thank you for reading.

We'd got broken into once, through the kitchen window, but once their feet hit the floor, our dog was on top of him in no time flat, if it wasn't for the fact that my sister accidently left the bathroom light on, whoever it was would've never found the door in time to escape before he dog got him. If he didn't, lets say he'd never have been able to be a father after that. We live in a moderate crime area, many of the homes around us have been broken into, some twice, but since that night, we've never had another break-in.

Also for being one of a select few to actually bother responding to my messages, your chocolate extra will be included with your parcel.
Eh. I don't know. It was kinda a let down, y'know? Besides, I didn't get any reaction from the people whom I really wanted to get a reaction out of. So to the three (can you believe it? only three f***ing people?) who responded...um, wasn't looking for a reaction from you guys...you guys have been the exceptions to the rule for me. I was also kinda looking forward to getting responses from some females too. *drat*

I hoped that you could resolve your difficulties and that there wasn't some serious event provoking your "rant," but felt that I should stay out of a problem I didn't know about. Maybe other people felt similarly.
If you would still like feedback from a female, here's mine, though I feel I don't have enough experience in the area to address it adequately. I probably don't have as much reason to distrust as it seemed like you did (hence my hesitance to address the problem before), but I feel it's sad in general when individuals make it difficult for others to trust a group in general. I can understand why you might feel the way you do about males, but I hope that eventually you can learn to trust them in general, and especially those who earn it. I think eventually you'll find more exceptions to the rule, and then find that there's so many exceptions, it's not a rule. :) Good luck.

I'm surprised you should think that - haven't you heard of naturism? It's about people living a nude lifestyle, and it is definitely not considered "sexual abuse" for families to be naturists, either in the USA or any civilised country. In fact I believe studies have shown that people who are brought up this way, so they don't feel guilty about their own or other people's bodies, end up being more well-adjusted people. If you think about it, being ashamed of (or having distaste for) something which is an intrinsic and necessary part of us -- namely our physical body -- is a perversion and goes against nature.

In article ,
Carefull with your attributions Shez, I did't say that, Lady Interference did..... Yes that is actually what I feel, I don't feel ashamed of beingseen nude, well by people I am cofortable with anyways...in the specific case that I had been talking about my close family. I mean after all we are all born naked, and under the clothes we are all the same and once you have seen one man & one woman naked, everything else is just a variation on a theme :)

Fantasizing about a fictional female who is portrayed as having brains and character is probably a lot healthier then fantasizing about somebody like Lara Croft who is basically a freakish characture.

Maybe it's better. It's like this: I used to hang out with Monkees fans, and now I hang out with Neil Innes fans, and some Beatles fans along the way. Now, here, we have teenagers fantasizing about people old enough to be their father... while if some teenager just had an affair with some person she knows as old as her father, that would be gross. But the seperation- that you never really would do anything with Neil Innes or Peter Tork or Paul McCartney- somehow makes it OK. By that sat of standards, then, it would be BETTER to fantasize about cartoon characters, because then it's PURELY fantastic...

Well it is possible to be aroused by something that isn't a photograph of an actual person. Pornography has existed much longer then photography. For example, the Greek red figure pottery of the sort that museums generally *don't* put on display.
Gotta say though, I do think getting the hot's for Daria is a bit strange, you might as well be entertaining fantasies about Hello Kitty.

Due to the frenzy and debate sparked by the idea of cartoon nudity, I think that some of you might be interested in a research paper I just finished about pornography. It was for a human sexuality class, and we were told to choose any topic about sexuality that interested us. So, I chose pornography.
Since some of you folks are a tad sensitive about the subject, I have posted my paper on the web for you guys to read. It's just to show you guys what I've discovered in the course of my research.
This is not to say nudity = porno, 'cause it isn't. But I just thought it was the approrpiate thread to inform you folks about the research paper.

Very good article, Nicole. It helps bring home the point that senseless violence is nothing new. I'd add that sociopathic killings are known throughout history; in other times and places, especially during wars, they were often institutionalized. Reading a history of the Nazi death camps or the Thirty Years' War, it's difficult not to believe that some of the people carrying out these atrocities were using ideology as a cover for their own insanity.
Sincerely Yours, Jordan
