Saw a newer episode a coujple of weeks ago... where Trent and Jane move in with Daria to escape their barrage of dysfunctional brothers and sisters, and there was a scene that really grabbed me by the heart and stomped it into a mushy red paste.
(I used the paste to caulk a few of my windows, but that's not important right now)
In the scene where Trent goes out with his "girlfriend" and Daria is left staring at them out the window, "Everlong", probably my favorite Foo Fighters song is playing... and it really broke my heart. It was a painful reminder of rejections I've had during my high school years... and thereafter as well. (class of '90)
Anyone else, or am I the only guy in here with a soul? ;)

"No,no,no you're not alone"-Michael Stipe from "Everybody Hurts". I'm still in high school (class of '00) and I can remember being rejected a few years ago. I still love her but I guess I'm gonna have to get over it. I guess it's guys like us that make the world go 'round.

Willow-You have a very old soul. Daria-It just looks mature for its age.

On the contrary, we (and I do mean "we") are the guys that have the remarkable ability to standing still at a point of space while the world revolves unobstructed. Indeed, I graduated from HS three years ago, and there remains _one_ set of feelings that remains, despite the fact that I haven't even see the girl since I graduated (or rather, a little after), or perhaps because of that.
Yes, it was an excellent episode. And no, you are not alone. Just remember, we're all human, and we all have feelings, no matter how much we suppress them. When I had to leave the girl of my life behind at 16, I was brutally crushed. It was positively awful. Now at 36 I can tell you that it does not get any easier, but you do learn from life's experiences and build a lot of character and coping skills. It is what makes us human, and D such a great program!
I was especially touched by Daria's body language at that moment. She was hugging herself. If she was a more openly emotional person, she probably would have been crying at that point.

Of course, having Jane and Quinn in the room probably helped her to suppress her emotions. If she had been by herself, she very well may have let loose with the waterworks.
Wonder if the writers/producers will ever REALLY have an episode where she goes on a date with Trent. (not just shopping for Jane's b-day present)

Nah, we've all been there at least once. (Or more.) <g> Rejection does suck, but at least it shows you tried. Not being rejected means you're either really fortunate, or you're not trying. Fear of rejection is an essential part of the human condition. It's one of the basic things that motivate us, and is part of what makes us human.
That, and the fear of being eaten by very large animals with sharp teeth. (Hey, we haven't evolved past that, yet.)
You guys who've posted here are incredible. If I could turn back the hands of time (yes, I know that line's from an oldies song, btw) and go back to my high school days I would love to try and make that much of an impression on a guy. Because I never ever made someone feel that way, or felt that way myself, during those days, and I feel like a primitive person here. I know that if I'd been the girl who stole your heart away I'd take care of it as best I could, at least nuturing those feelings into a devoted friendship. Could never leave anyone feeling that way.
*sigh* But unfortunately I could never deal with such an issue. I think I shalst count my blessings for my Barry, 'cos otherwise I'd be screwed in the game of love.

Don't sell yourself short Diane. I'm fairly confident that, given the opportunity, that you could have very easily taken any number of hapless guys and broken their hearts with the same callous disregard as a little kid pulling the wings off of flies. <G>
That you didn't, and that you wouldn't want to, is just one thing that makes you more valuable.
Of course I am, (ahem) immune. Nope, no way I would ever let a female take such control of me that I'd act like such a complete idiot. But I do sympathize with those poor guys: They can't think about anything else, frantically arranging to be in just the right place to catch even a glimpse of her, phone calls chatting about nothing, the gnawing in the pit of the stomach, the tingling in the extremities, daydreaming, pounding pulse, skin flushing just from being in her presence, feeling like an idiot for every spoken word--and the unspoken ones too. At least--that's some of the stuff I've heard rumors about.
I guess it cuts both ways. I've heard, through indirect channels, of women who've revealed they were a little disappointed I hadn't responded when we were in school together. I never even suspected. I never even suspected there might be anything to suspect. The time just wasn't right and I just wasn't ready. And there was that incident in the 7th grade. I encountered my 2nd-grade girlfriend who handed me a valentine with the note, "I will love you for ever and ever." I was dumbfounded. I guess I just wasn't ready then either. I'm sorry.
"I guess he's not ready for a physical relationship."
Well, I just remember when I was in high school how all the guys from the high school across the street used to practically run the other way when they saw me approaching. I don't know if this was due to appearance or not, but I do know I stood out from the hordes of female schoolmates who wore a lot of makeup and didn't wear glasses. I dunno...Jordan's seen my pics...he could tell you a bit more accurately how I look (and I've rarely changed appearance from the time I was 14 to the present, just gotten maybe a bag under each of my eyes and less pimples/blackheads).
But why should I want to treat someone like that if I were the type of person to do that? If someone thought me attractive, I'd damn well be flattered and would want to at least make friends with that person, y'know, and help them find someone they're really be interested in as I'm taken. I'd want them to be happy just as I'd want them to want me to be happy. Why treat humanity any other way unless it's necessary to do so?
Incidentally, I think glasses can be cute too, and I hate looking at a face with too much makeup on. And I have what amounts to a phobia against kissing someone with a lot of makeup. Someone else on this board could tell you about that ;-)
It's okay to be nice when you can... but some guys (none of the ones on ATD, I'm sure) are real assholes and take any kindness to them as an admittance that you're hot for them... And just because you're involved doesn't mean they'll leave you alone... When I had to ride the bus alot, I used to wear a fake wedding band but it didn't stop guys from hitting on me and trying to talk me into having an affair with them... sometimes you just have to be rude...
With alot of makeup? With any makeup! If a female comes anywhere near him with even lipstick on he throws a cross up in her face... ;)

Call it lonliness, desperation, or simple lunkheadedness... we misread signals quite a bit. Usually to our own embarrassment and humiliation.
Well... I usually trying to check for wedding bands, and avoid hitting on women wearing them. Sometimes it's not easy, though... some women like to wear several rings and you can't be sure if one is a wedding ring or not.

Some years back, I was unfortunate enough to be friends with a very nasty guy (whom at the time I thought was nice) who shall remain nameless but whom we might call "Andre".
Walking down a busy street with Andre was painful because he would constanly leer at every pretty girl who passed by. If a girl made the mistake of smiling back at him, Andre would take this as proof that he (in his words) "coulda had her".
Andre was undeterred by the woman's marital status, and even by the actual presence of the woman's mate. He got a lot of dirty looks from escorts that way, and never seemed to grasp why.
Heh ... not exactly but it's semi true, I don't like kissing a girl with makeup on.
