De-lurking and whining, all at once

I've been semi-posting for a while, and I suppose I should make my return official. Look at me, I'm here. Yay.

It's also Valentine's Day, and I'm alone. Again. (Naturally.) I spent last weekend with the people who I consider true friends; the Janes to my Daria. I stayed up all Saturday night and threw a worthless computer out a window. I fixed a 486. I found out that a guy I've had a stupid crush on for months may like me, and realized how useless it would be if he did, because he's eighteen and lives four hours away. I realized how little I amd all my efforts to cheer him up matter to my clinically depressed ex-boyfriend. And they cancelled Daria, yet again, in favor of some stupid MTV show. Bastards. In short, I have had one of the worst days of my life today, and I realize how stupid and insignificant my teenage problems are. Yet they affect me, because I am not Our Heroine. I foolishly let others penetrate my defenses, and I can't say that it hasn't been worth it. But there are _always_ downsides, and I'm seeing one now, as I post on _Usenet_ about my love life or complete lack thereof.

I'm sorry, that really has no place here. I sort of needed to say that, and I apologize for the lack of coherency.

Nice to hear from you again. No apology required, as far as I can see. You kept a sense of perspective, which is laudable, and your decision to tell us what a bummer of a day you've had may have made a real difference to someone else. Some lurker whose name we'll never know, but who was thinking, "I must be the only one who's having such a miserable time on Valentine's Day," and who felt a little less lonely and isolated after reading your post.

Just my instant reaction, for whatever it's worth; even though it makes me a little self-conscious to re-read what I've written, and think, "Hmm, Mr O'Neill might have written that." <self-mocking smile>

Fagetta 'bout it. There are a lot of people that are lonelier than you out there. Like the people on the mailing list I moniter. Afterall its a schizoid personality disorder mailing list. Of course they probably all don't mind being lonely. Besides you'll find that most teenagers are vapid airheads so why care. I'm 18 my self and I'm beginning to find that you have to embrace and cherish what is most unique about yourself, and always stick to your ridgid dogma.

Not that that ever helps. Like breaking your arm and someone saying "other people have broken their arms". It doesn't hurt any less, and I still only have two arms, and one's broken. not very good odds.

But if you like to hear there are other people lonely, the Lanthorn (college newspaper) had a poll and one third said "I hate Valentine's day because I don't have a date", one third said "I'd like Valentine's day if I had a date", and 14% said they just hate Valentine's day.

I really doubt that... it's been a while since I've seen it, but as I recall there was "yay! sex!" stuff and the perpetuation of the outcast = someone who will blow up the school idea, which is really not what we need.

I hate Valentine's Day because for so long I didn't have anyone to celebrate Valentine's Day with, and then when I finally had someone to celebrate Valentine's Day with it became so transparently schmaltzy and oversweet. I hate the notion that there's this one day out there on our calendars where so many of us can feel like total and complete losers...and as someone pointed out, it's much harder having someone and not being able to spend Valentine's Day with that person than it is to be alone, because at least when you're alone you know that you have a good explanation for the emptiness inside...and the whole idea that this is supposed to be a day to celebrate "love" is ludicrous...if you're going to celebrate love, why not do it all year long instead of one stupid little day?

LOL...okay, rant time over...

Not sure. Personally, I saw Winona Ryder's character as a bit of an outcast as well which (IMO) balanced out the 'blow up the school' bit.

Also, I do admit that I often disregard the possible messages of a film if I enjoy it. IE I liked it, and didn't really concern myself with the fact that it's 'not what we need.'

I think movies should have some responsibility for social impact. I mean, otherwise... I mean, "Triumph of the Will" was a well-made film, but....

let's just say Nazis are not what we need :)

Well, I don't think she's married to him. I think it's fairly common for an Irish name, not that there's a lot of Irish people around here, but anyway. There's got to be a bunch somewhere. Ireland, I guess.

They're more likely to START something by being paranoid. I mean, the murderers thought (probably rightly, although they overreacted) that the school system was opressive towards them... and with enough of that, and their mentality, there were murders. Now we're giving them more reason to feel opressed? grrr....
