Is there any uncharted territory left?

I am new to atd. I have only been posting for about a week, but I've noticed that there are two topics of discussion that have been gon e over with several fine-tooth combs. One is this whole Daria & Trent thing. OK, I admit, I'm a bit of a 'shipper myself. I almost live for any episode with even the briefest appearance of Trent. However, it's a topic that's been overwrought in almost every fanfic I've read & almost every other post on this NG.

The second topic is this whole "Where is Lawndale" deal. OK, I plead guilty to this one myself, since most of the posts I've put up have been under this topic. But thanks to Glen Eichler, who places his precious teenager's hometown near Baltimore, I think this discussion may be on its last legs. (Besides, many of the situations we've seen in Season 3 -- hurricanes, snow, redneck bars 100 miles away, and the whole Colonial-era college thing tend to rule out most of the rest of the lower 48.)

A day or so ago, someone mentioned some other topics that have been pounded more than 3-finger poi: favorite character, favorite episode, favorite song in an episode, Christ-like figures, and so on and so on and so on. I am wondering if there are ANY topics that have not been touched on in this newsgroup.

For instance: What is your favorite character's favorite frozen yogurt flavor? What color underwear/lingerie do they wear? Will Jane EVER wear anything other than that red jacket/black shirt-shorts-tight outfit? Will there ever be a feature-length DARIA: THE MOVIE? (If Beavis & Butthead can do America, isn't there a country that Daria could do, like Liechtenstein?)

And what about a petition/letter writing campaign for an official Daria Soundtrack? True, this could be a multi-volume set; the songs from "Road Worrier" alone would take up a whole CD. (And if MTV is looking for some legal assistance in this area, and needs, say, an aspiring young copyright attorney to get all the necessary permissions from the artists & their labels and from ASCAP, I am SO available!)

Or, how about the actors who do the voices appearing on MTV, like on a News 1515 segment? Or on TRL (thereby giving me a reason to watch that piece of ....)

And here's a question for all of those who have graduated from high school (especially if you were a grad during the Big '80s like me): which Daria character(s) did you resemble then, and which character(s) do you resemble now, 10+ years after high school? (And has THIS subject been beaten to death yet?)

As a two-year veteran of this ever-growing club, I've pretty much seen just about everything spoken, done, and smoked. But even though it'll appear like nothing is left, there's ALWAYS something that has never been touched by ordinary fans. (I'm sure that word of the Lawndale High Wrestling Federation has gotten around by now) And there will always be innovative fans that are ready and willing to test the waters.

There will eventually be a Daria movie, but I wouldn't expect it to be around anytime soon. Daria has a nice little cult folling, but it's not big enough for a motion picture.

Let me clarify "resemble": I meant personality-wise, more than physical resemblance. For example, were you more like Brittany (perpetually perky; not necessarily large-breasted) in high school? And are you more like a Daria-type now (more cynical, less perky)? Or were you a combination of 2 or more characters? Like, were you a little bit Trent (with a penchant for music) and a little bit Mack (athletic but still intelligent and likeable)? (My ex-fiance was a Trent/Mack combo in high school, & still is today.)

In high school, I was more of an intelligent loner (like Daria)b/c I was an Air Force brat who moved around a lot & went to 3 different schools in 2 different states between grades 9-12. But by 12th grade I was more like Jodie (class officer, school paper, bunch o' clubs). Physically, though, I didn't really resemble any of the Daria characters; even though I'm Black, I didn't come close to looking like Jodie. (I was about 4'10" & looked like a 12-year-old -- except for my chest, now THERE, I definitely resembled Brittany, with no help from implants or Kleenex.Otherwise, I probably looked more like that little girl on the Big Wheel in "Daria - The Musical".)

Okay, hope I cleared that up. And here's another question for all you high school alums who eagerly await your class reunions -- or maybe not: In the wake of all the media coverage of school shootings, sexual harrassment, drug use by teens, gangs, etc., would you say that high school was better then than now, worse then than now, or about the same? And was your school ANYTHING like Lawndale High (did you have a Ms. Li or Mr. O'Neill in your life; extreme security measures)? I'll be checking back in a few days, when I can get access to this computer again.

Hm, in HS I was cynical and perky. I never met an extra-curricular activity I didn't like. I was also involved in a bunch of music and writing projects as well. I hear ya. I moved around some as a kid, too. Fortunately, by the time we moved to Charlotte, I was only halfway through 7th grade, and we were lucky enough to not have my dad transferred until after I graduated HS. Now up till then, we got transferred about every 3-4 years. And that sucks. (No, not a mil brat, a corporate brat.)

Physically, I was tall and very skinny. Now I'm tall and built like a Safety. (Not as big as a linebacker, though. <g>)

Oh, I'd much rather've been in my old HS than any others. We could still get away with all kinds of crap, and the worst that would happen would be that we'd get a finger shaken at us. Of course, we also had a principal who didn''t put up with any students who crossed the line, and we all knew it. 2,400 students, and in my 3 yrs of SHS (it was 10-12), no guns, no knives, and only a couple of fights. Oh, yeah, and one dead pig hung from a tree. (No, I don't know why-- I think it was a leftover from a pig-pickin', or something.)

Was it like LHS? No, not really... I did have one teacher who reminded me ever-so-slightly of Mr. D-- he was my history teacher, and his nickname was God. (Because he knew everything. <g>) He was a helluva teacher, though, even though he liked to slam books on the desk for effect-- or maybe to wake up the kids in the back. <g> You know how those backbenchers are, don'cha?

Well, first thing to do is to make a list of what we need: 1) Storyline: That's the most important point. No special skills required. 2) Graphics Artists: Backgrounds are the most important thing here. There won't be terribly many character animations (mostly walking phases). 3) Musicians (optional): Music would be a great addition. It is not a must, however, and can always be added afterwards. There are a lot of .MID and .MOD artists out there. Once we got a finished game, I'm sure we won't have any trouble finding someone to do a little composing for us. 4) Programmers: If we abstain from fancy effects (wouldn't be appropriate, anyway, if we want the game to look consistent with the series) I could code the whole thing myself. But I don't think it will be necessary. There is this SCRAMM project where some guys are trying to create a LucasArts type game-creation software. They must have at least some usable code till now. But that's not so important right now. I won't start coding until we got the complete storyline worked out.

OK, there's the list. Any volunteers? Any additions to the list? And most important, any storyline ideas? One idea that occurs to me right now is some kind of journey around the world. That would give us plenty of opportunity to have fun with all kinds of stereoypes. Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas, yet, how to get Daria and Jane (and maybe Trent) to do such a journey. Another idea is a journey through time. I'm thinking about Day of the Tentacle here. Maybe something in that direction. Wouldn't be any crazier than Depth takes a Holiday. Whatever we do, I think a main part of solving the game should be clever teamwork between the game characters. These would be at least Daria and Jane. Control would be either the Sam and Max way, i.e. Jane's a sidekick that follows you around and can be controlled only indirectly or the DOTT way, giving you full control over both. Maybe a mixture would be good. When they are separated you get to control of both, when they're together you control only Daria. But we can work that out once we've decided on a general storyline. Well Daria DID appear in "virtual stupidity" the Beavis -N- Butthead video game. She was a NPC (boy I know those cool role-playing terms don't I?) who let's B-n-B out of a trunk (then takes a picture for the school paper, that's are Daria!) She also has a few lines in the begining.

I really think we should have Daria and Jane together throughout the game (as per
Sam and Max), or perhaps the Daria character could have the option of bringing her
along or doing her "quest" on her own, effectively giving two different plots in
the one game (as per Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis).
        As to what that "quest" could be, should we have them fighting their usual
fights (brains vs beauty, the injustice of the school system, etc), which could
have the likes of Quinn and Brittany as their enemies, or do we have something
happen that teams all the characters together to fight a common goal.  Perhaps
something could happen to everyone else (they get smart, or the educzation system
starts working properly), and Daria and Jane battle to get things _back_ to the
way they usually are (which kind of reminds me of Day of the Tentacle).
        In any case, I really love playing the LucasArts adventures, and we should
follow their "style" rather than the likes of Sierra On Line.

I've started working on a fighting game with Daria and pals. When I first thought of the idea, I wondered how exactly would Daria sound saying "Ha-dou-ken", while shooting out a blue fireball. Hmmmm ....... that's actually kinda funny. Probably as funny as a Cyber-Sandi. Anyway, I started work on the animation. I found some cool background music, but only a few tunes. Anyway, it'll be a month or two, but when it's done, it's going to look cool.

If they decided to make the Daria movie using "real" actors, who do you think the roles should be played by? Janeane Garofolo comes to mind for Daria (similar to the Abby Barnes character in The Truth About Cats & Dogs), but no other names come to mind for the other characters. Any ideas?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Claire Danes would be a good Daria. I hated "My So Called Life" (because I was fully expecting to relate to it but I didn't, not even in the slightest), but she was intense in "Romeo & Juliet" and I could see her as Daria. For Jane, I think Juliette Lewis would fit well...why? Well, for me the reasoning would be stupid...so many people have compared me to Juliette Lewis, and I find myself connecting more to Jane, and...um, explanation time over. :) Robin Williams is manic enough to play Jake and I think Catherine O'Hara should play Helen since she not only looks the part but would also fit well as a "professional mother" type. Katie Holmes could be Quinn because she's got that intelligence going but is more known for being very light. Nora Dunn would be a good Ms. Li (*guffaw*...wonder why). As for the rest...I don't know...I'm trying to fit in Geena Davis (maybe Ms. Barch, maybe Aunt Amy...?), Freddie Prinze Jr. (maybe Kevin...?), Jennifer Love Hewitt (probably Brittany...?), and Winona Ryder (I know, a bit old, but maybe a good Sandi...? she can be a bit dark if she wants to be).

I think Claire is too old to play Quinn, her looks are too imposing. Larissa Oleynik would have been perfect a couple of years ago but I'm not sure what she looks like now.

I think Bjork might be good as Andrea, which is essentially a cameo role.

Ann Gosling would make a good Daria, she has very similar looks and has played a similarly sullen schoolgirl previously, albeit in a completely crap sitcom (Next of Kin). Except I'm pretty sure she's too tall, also I suspect she must be about 20 by now. Mind you Melissa Joan Hart gets away with playing a 16 year old at 23, so who knows. It seems to be traditional to cast 20- and 30-somethings as school kids in American TV shows. When she looks into camera Ann Gosling has quite a powerful screen presence, not unlike Melissa Joan Hart's legendary magnetism.

Trent could well be played by TV presenter Jamie Theakston. He doesn't look quite the same, having a more affable appearance (nor is he an actor, strictly speaking), but he seems to wow the girls in a similar manner to Trent.

I can't think of anyone else offhand.

I think Katie Holmes could do Daria... They're features are similar. A great actress for Jane would be Angelina Jolie (think Hackers)... if they could make her look just a little younger. And for Jane's Addition... Freddie Prinze Jr. Leelee Sobieski would be perfest for Quinn... they already look a lot alike. The 3J's could be played by Elijah Wood, Rider Strong, and Joshua Jackson. A wonderful actor for Trent would be Ryan Phillippe... He has the same brand of charisma that Trent does. Natalie Portman or Kirstin Dunst might be good for Sandi. Sandra Bullock would be good for Daria's aunt. Jim Carrey could do a great Jake! I agree that Kirtie Alley could do Helen... But a younger Bette Midler would be perfect. And finally, Joseph Gordon-Levitt(of 3rd Rock... fame) cold work as Kevin... and as Brittany... Britney Spears? (She's certainly peppy enough)

Nooo.... then I'd have to protest. I started "Citizens Against Jim Carrey" like 4 years ago... I just think he's one of the most annoying people in the world. I saw like 5 minutes of "Liar Liar" and literally could not watch anymore, I saw "The Mask" and whatever Batman he was in and while not quite that bad it was still pretty bad.

That's why my parents wouldn't let me go vegetarian. They pointed out that I'd never liked vegetables, and I stated that I'd never liked meat either. So, they asked me what I did like, but the idea of feeding me fruit and pasta and nothing else, didn't grab them, for some reason. They spouted some nonsense about "growing".

And...heck, that would make her look so much more *unlike* how I looked in high school during the spring, with my uniform shorts & blue tights. "Daria", a movie? Well, I do have quite the ample bosom, but not as much as Brittany...then again aren't most of the females on "Daria" drawn with pretty good-sized bosoms? LOL. As far as other qualities...I have the dark hair that Jane has, except mine goes down two inches beyond the shoulders and is kinda wavy-ish...and I have her olive complexion...I probably had Daria's physique, but I was still quite tallish...not like a basketball player but even when I was a freshman in high school I was 5' 5"...I never wore anything like any of the characters as I had to wear uniforms...half the time I would wear the plaid skirts and half the time I would wear the boxy shorts...most of the time even when it was warm out I would wear my dark blue (or in my senior year, white) poly-wool blend sweater...I guess I was like Jodie when it came to extracurriculars...the marachi group, National Honors Society, Spanish Club, Science Club (secretary/treasurer), Poetry Club, Students Against Drunk Driving (treasurer), and AIDS Peer Group in junior year alone, and that was the year I took three honors courses and AP US History and volunteered at least 100 hours and worked and still had time to train to become a eucharistic minister and go to theme parks with my friends and be an honors student...but I would consider myself ultimately to be a Jane/Jodie blend.

I don't know -- I guess to see Tracy Grandstaff, Wendy Hoopes, & the rest of the voice-actors I could tolerate Kurt Loder. Then again, I remember that I liked reading Kurt Loder's columns in Rolling Stone 15 years ago; he's disappointed me ever since he's been on MTV. You'd think that with what MTV is paying him , he could at least afford to RENT some personality. Or at least have some of his smarminess surgically removed (maybe his HMO doesn't cover smarm-ectomies or personality enhancements).

Then again, seeing what the actors really look like might completely destroy all my illusions. I've actually seen a picture of the actor who does Trent's voice. He does not look anything like Trent Lane (heck, he looked more like NATHAN Lane, from his headshot). I seriously doubt the actors would look like their characters (Wendy Hoopes couldn't look like Helen, Quinn, AND Jane simultaneously, could she?) In a way, it could turn out like seeing KISS unmasked. (When I finally saw Paul Stanley without his makeup for the first time, my crush on him went down the drain. The mystery was completely gone -- & he wasn't so cute anymore).

It's almost midnight -- gotta be at work in 8 hrs. 'Night, everybody!

You sound like my sister. <g> She was such a huge KISS fan... I was one of the few 3rd/4th graders at my school who knew all of the lyrics, whether I wanted to or not. ;-)

I have to admit, though, that one of my all-time favorite songs is "Love Gun." (Smiles mysteriously to himself.)
