If anyone was going to die in Daria it should be Trent, sure for a cartoon he's cute but it would be soo cool to see Daria cry or is Daria just way to cool for that? Personally i recon she'd try to kill her self.

She's not sufficiently involved with him to kill herself, though I agree she'd cry. But would we see it? She usually locks herself in the school toilets when she's upset, so we never find out whether she cries or not.

Oh yes, it's a common fault of sitcoms that they don't take themselves seriously enough, and serve up emotional shallowness, mistaking it for lightheartedness. One of the faults with Nickelodeon's sitcom Clarissa was that Clarissa never laughed or cried, leaving it ultimately empty and shallow. But you need to show the emotional lowpoints in order to put highlight the lighthearted moments, and of course you need to see the characters having a good laugh occasionally too.

In Daria's case we haven't seen her cry, and offhand I don't recall her laughing either. The fact that she doesn't cry isn't symptomatic of "coolness" but repressed emotions. But although she's pretty repressed in expressing her feelings, she does convey a rich emotional depth in her own subtle way. But it would add something to the series if she were to collapse in hysterics just once, or cry real tears.

One time when she laughed was during the wedding ceremony in "I Don't."

Why is it that you get this urge to laugh at inconvenient/inappropriate moments? Wedding ceremonies, funerals (although the inappropriacy of laughter at a funeral is arguable), two minute silences on Nov 11... This last one is always the worst: my friend Wendy will start giggling, and try to hide it, and this will start me off... Arggghh, it has happened every bloody year, for the 11 years I've known her! But anyway, laughter at a wedding ceremony doesn't count, as it is IMHO impossible not to laugh in such situations. <g>

I think it's because laughter is a release from stress, so people sometimes do it when they're stressed or nervous. I used to have a girlfriend who would laugh when she was frightened. Formal situations tend to create tension if you're not accustomed to them, and if you can't contain the tension you end up letting it out.

Heh, I think that would be interesting, with a couple options to it:

1. They think Trent is dead, Daria cries (you get your crying there), and then they find him alive, and there's a happy reunion thingy. That would be the great ratings one.

2. They think Trent is dead, so Daria kills herself, mentioning Trent's death in her suicide note as the cause, it turns out he's not really dead, but he finds out about Daria's suicide and the fact that he caused it, is overcome with guilt, and kills himself then. Sort of a weird Romeo and Juliet thing. That would be the lots of death one.

Kill off Trent to see if Daria cries, or tries to take her own life?
