No spoiler space - but briefly, this ep was DTAH the way it *should* have been. The very ending was a little weak, but funny throughout and a few drop down ROFL-type funny.

The first laugh came with the "Encyclopedia Brown: Boy Detective" music with Daria on the bicycle. And it got better from there. (But I would have loved to see Daria as "The Magician".)

And I agree, the ending was not only weak, but disturbing. I'm guessing that the entire episode needs to be considered out of continuity with the rest of the Lawndale universe. Else, we've seen the last of Mr. D. What he did was criminal. In Pennsylvania, the charges would be: Simple Battery, possibly Aggravated Assault, and Endangering the Welfare of Children. At least.

I'd have preferred to see only the dream sequence be out of continuity. Oh, well. I still consider it a good episode overall.

404 (perfect production number for this show!) was the THIRD WORST episode of "Daria" ever, IMNSHO. The other hated episodes are 2.) Depth Takes A Holiday, and 1.) Daria!

It is usually a bad portent for a show when the "it was all a dream" element enters the picture. It is also usually a bad portent for a show when lame TV show and movie parodies enter the picture. Call it the Simpsons Syndrome. It suggests that the writers are running out of ideas...hopefully not the case at Daria.

All they would have had to do to create a firm foundation for a *decent* mystery-themed episode would have been to concentrate on the events that happened in real space-time. All the football team except for Mack turn in identical, 100% correct papers. Someone from the football team apparently stole Mr DeMartino's answer key for the test. But whom?

Since nobody's talking, DeMartino tells everyone that unless the culprit comes forward or is revealed by a snitch, EVERYONE IN THE CLASS gets an F on the test.

Since Jane's academic record cannot stand an F from DeMartino, she attempts to convince Daria to help her do some amateur detective work.

Eventually, Daria and Jane track down the real brains of the operation...Lawndale High Varsity football team coach Jackson. You were expecting one of the players? They wouldn't be bright enough to pull this off.

DeMartino, Jane and Daria are disappointed but not surprised that Ms. Li sides with Coach Jackson in this matter.

A simple but effective plot which could be embroidered on endlessly and produce a halfway decent episode. Too bad nobody took the simple and elegant route.

My hope for this season lies in the fact that Season 3 started with a few sucky episodes, Through A Lens Darkly notwithstanding. I'm just waiting for the "Daria Dance Party"-quality episode that will kickstart Season 4.

Agreed on the ending being kind of a letdown. I had the idea that Kevin had been wrongly accused, and that we'd find out someone else had done it at the end. Instead, we didn't find out who did it at all, unless we were supposed to assume from the beginning that Kevin was the guilty party. The biggest laughs for me came from:

1) The "Trent is dead" bit: Nice exploitation of Jane's mischevious side, but what cracked me up was Daria's reaction to finding out she'd been had.

2) The "Charlie's Angels" sequences, especially Tiffany's parts. Aside from the brief "Murder, She Wrote" thing, it was the only TV mystery reference I could identify.

3) The fact that Mack played prominently into the story for once. His reaction to his test score piqued my curiosity...I'm still wondering if his expression meant disappointment or indifference. (I'm guessing disappointment, since he got a low B on a test the class did "well" on.)

  • Andrea!!!

But there are some things I'm still unclear on, like, why did Ms. Li pause in the hall and *look* at Daria like that during the non-fantasy sequence? Has Jake really decided to quit his job? Did the class get to keep their original test scores? And....what about Naomi? (obscure reference, sorry <g>)

It was a hilarious episode, though, barely edging out the musical as my favorite fantasy episode. I hope they get around to a "deep" episode soon, though, I need a fix. Spoilers coming up for 404, if you don't want to know, turn back now! I warn you here because when I do it sometimes the spoiler space shows up, sometimes it doesn't, so repeat 404 spoilers upcoming, this is your last chance to turn back:

Too late to turn back now...

At first I wasn't too crazy with ths idea, I was looking at DTAH 2 or something of the sort, but It was done much better.

Spoofs: Enjoyed them very much, There were refs to Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, Magnum, P.I., Pink Panther, The Fugitive, Charlie's Angels, and more I'll probably notice after a 2nd viewing of the ep.

The murderer(s) being everyone was a cop-out but it was funny to see how they did it. Jane's description of her attempt was the best, just completely devious, cyanide in his sandwich and the description was priceless. Mack and Brittany seemed to want to get their kicks in when he was down, and Mr. D. you know he's been wanting to strangle Kevin for a long time.

Daria's interrogation scene with O'neill playing good cop and DeMartino playing bad cop,was another funny one as well.

The ending was very flat, however. I was expecting a conclusive answer to who took the tests, without one were left to assume it was Kevin, my assumption anyways, but some clarification would be nice. Since they were spoofing mysteries and such, a spoof of the famous Dallas cliffhanger resolution with J.R. in the shower, was something I was looking for, but still no biggie, was a good ep.

Not a huge fan of these non-reality based eps, but this one was about as good as it could be done, with the exception of the ending. Possibly the most funny and comedic ep. so far in the series' run. I'll give it a B-, would be a B to a B+ if the ending was more definitive, but still a good ep, but then again(with the exception of DTAH), they all are.

Welcome to atd, Mocky Bird! DTAH is the abbreviation for "Depth Takes a Holiday" (Season 3, Ep. 3) -- the one where Cupid & the St. Patrick's Day leprecaun (sp?) show up in Lawndale & ask Daria & Jane to ask themround up three rogue holidays (Christmas, Halloween & Guy Fawkes Day). You will probably read many negative comments on this episode form other atd-ers; I am probably one of the VERY FEW who's brave enough to admit to liking that episode.

And I liked this one (MSS for abbreviation), too. This is probably the first epsode written by Peggy Nicoll (The Lawndale Hunter, Fair Enought, Just Add Water) that didn't make me want to drop-kick my VCR out the window. That said, I'm still holding my breath on the Daria movie (which she's co-writing w/ Glenn Eichler). I'm praying it's not 90 minutes of "Ms. Li forces everyone in Lawndale to do some silly group activity just so she can make some bucks on the side & allegedly bring glory to Laaaaaawndale High."

So you don't like the "fantasy" episodes.

So your definition of "worst" has nothing to do with the quality of writing, acting or animation on a given show, and is only judged by whether or not it happens to fall into a sub-genre that doesn't meet your personal tastes.

Some of us appreciate the creativity that goes into these episodes (as long as they don't get too carried away with them).

I think the three worst episodes are "The Lost Girls," "The Daria Hunter" and "Fair Enough" in descending order. And I have actual reasons for putting them there that have to do with the actual quality of the episode.

The songs were well-written, the spoken parts were well written, and the plot, although a little weird, showec us some new things about the characters (Helen worried about something other than work, and cares enough about Trent, who she barely knows, to convince him to stay at their house during the storm; Jake, for a fleeting moment, is brave; Trent appears to give a damn about something other than his music, etc.). Fantasy episodes can mean a series is running out of steam, but other times it can mean the writers had a really weird idea and wanted to run with it. That said, even though I thought it was one of the worst eps, it was still better than the entire run of "Family Guy." ;-)

I'm beginning to think that whenever "Daria" does a fantasy ep, it's more than likely that some will *really* love it, while others *really* hate it, even moreso than with the "regular" eps. Not to beat a dead horse, but this is mostly because the appeal of the show is in its realistic feel. Fantasy just isn't the show's strength, and, to quote Stuart Smalley, "That's... okay." It doesn't *have* to be good at all genres-- it's good enough as it is, and it doesn't need to try to be something it isn't (i.e. a fantasy series)... at least IMO... ;-) [okay, okay, I'll admit that a self-parody ep would be kinda cool-- where the show parodies itself-- imagine an animated "Behind the scenes at 'Daria,' where we see animated characters memorizing lines, and refusing to come out of trailers. *That* would be funny as a one-shot sort of thing. <g>]

Again, I agree on TLG, but that's all. I know I'm in a minority here, but I liked TDH and FE, season 2 were the first episodes of Daria I ever watched and they got me hooked into the show as I am now. There doesn't have to be a deepness to every ep. Some can be deep, and some can be just silly, and still be a good ep.(Except DTAH) For the record I liked MSS, for the same reasons, a silly plot, but everyone stayed in character and tried to wade through it in their own styles, which I like, I also like to see their reactions in different situations, and if the change and possible grow from the experience, then all the better.

Agreed, to some degree... but the real problem with MSS was that the continuity of the non-dream plot was awful. For starters, there's that great scene where Daria and Jane discuss killing Kevin in front of Ms. Li-- she makes a priceless face, and then that thread is ditched. Gone. Pfft! Why bother with the scene, then? It's just a throwaway. Second, the whole ending. Icky. Mr. D strangling Kevin in front of class? Sorry, that just doesn't work for me. Why? Because it's never established who stole the stupid test to begin with! Sorry, that just rubbed me the wrong way. It seems like the "real world" parts of the episode serve only as background for the dream sequence, and are treated as such. Sloppy.

Other than that, the dream sequence was amusing, but it felt a bit gimmicky and contrived-- like a Simpsons ep. And that doesn't play to the strength of the series. A much better ep would've kept to the original plot, with a much shorter dream sequence, and more reality-based fun. (Which is what makes the show so great--- it ISN'T the Simpsons.) I mean, I like Daria's dreams, but this seemed less about getting into her head, and more about putting the characters in situations just to please the artists.

I guess after waiting 7 months for new eps, I was hoping for something a little less... unfocused, and something that was written a whooole lot tighter. Hey, they only get 13 shots a year, and it makes no sense to me to waste one like that. *Shrug* Just my opinion. I'll still watch the show, as even the bad eps are better than 98% of what's on, anyway.

Hm, here are my 3 worst: 1) Just Add Water-- Why???? FE was high drama compared to this one, and JAW was just a rehash of FE and TDH, except, wait! They're on a *boat* this time. Get it? A *boat*! 2) The New Kid-- Again-- Why??? That one really felt awkward, and not in a good way. The little things were just not very believeable-- like Daria confiding in Quinn that she got dumped? Please. Although I love the character of Ted. He's priceless. Too bad that Robert was the character they reused instead. Bo-ring. 3) DTAH. There's actually a scene that I have to turn the sound down on-- it makes me just cringe to think about it. That, and the lack of research done for the ep-- as many UK Darianites pointed out, there is no Guy Fawkes' Day, it's called Bonfire Night, or something.

That said, I'll still watch them if they're being broadcast, as they all have some damn funny moments in them. ;-)

As for TLG, I think it's a well-written ep, but it's apparent that the voice of Val managed to irritate a statistically significant number of viewers, including me. The writing was good, but Val's voice made me want to cringe sometimes, just like the woman who has seizures when she hears Mary Hart's voice.

Heh, and if Glenn and Co *are* reading, I'm only being critical because I care about the quality of the show. So I have high standards-- sue me. ;-)

No it's not. That suggestion about killing Kevin turns into Kevin's murder in Daria's dream. And Ms. Li's eavesdropping on the "plot" turns into her accusing Daria in the dream.

It seems perfectly reasonable to me. There are some teachers who simply hate one particular student. I've had teachers who make that scene seem real enough to me. They'd fixate on the idea that one student was guilty of something and they'd never let anything, particularly evidence, shake them from that view.

And I can easily imagine the strangling scene. I had a history teacher who routinely paddled. Each day he'd spend the first 10 or 15 minutes of class time selecting people who had somehow incurred his wrath and taking them to his "inner sanctum" (his office) and we'd hear the whacking sounds echoing through the pod. I lucked out--barely--but the whole thing still makes me angry. I never knew what offense had been committed as the paddlings always occurred at the beginning of class, before anyone had had a chance to do anything.

Yeah, when I was in school, paddling was still alllowed, but soon after I got in, it was banned. Even when it was allowed, I never knew anyone who got paddled. The assistant principals walked around with them in their hands, but from what I gathered, they used it more as a symbolic threat than as an actual corrective. But paddling is one thing-- throttling someone is something else. That's what we in the legal biz call attempted murder-- a felony. I don't think *any* school system in the US allowed that sort of thing in the last 50 years.

I just think that the last scene needed a lot more work. You could've achieved a very similar comedic effect *without* DeMartino trying to murder Kevin. And we *still* don't know (and never will) who stole the frickin' test. I'll reiterate-- that's just sloppy writing.

It set the seed for the dream, but neither Daria or Jane saw her, so I agree on that point. Why was Li there if she wasn't seen? Hmmm......

Fully agreed, I was expectng a scene after Kevin being choked out, like for example, a typical ending scene in the pizza place describing all of the recent events with the sarcasm thrown in by our heroines. Describing how Kevin somehow got the answers or snitching on who did. While all signs point to Kevin playing a role, we'll prolly never really know the exact events and who took the answers for sure. One of Daria's Unsolved Mysteries, ala who brought Daria home in "The Big House"

Still overall, the ep. may have been the pure funniest of all so far.

This was just showing us some of Daria's inner thoughts about how she feels about the people in her life, and since when do dreams make complete sense, by outright declaring this a dream episode, this gave the license to do whatever the writers wanted, one ep. of this sort is ok as long as they can keep it along the lines of MSS. And don't tell me you didn't like some of the parodies, Upchuck's Angels, Jake as Inspector Clouseau, and Daria as Magnum, P.I. had me LOL!

Very true there, the only other shows I'll make an effort to catch are Dilbert, The Simpsons, and Futurama. Notice all are animated series, hmmm......,only non animated show I was watching was "Sliders" on the Scifi channel, which was cancelled as on last month. Although still, DTAH? A lot of TV is better than that will ever be.

It was a very close call between TLG and TNK, the main reason being as you described below, I can't listen to that voice for what seems like 20 of the 22 minutes of that ep. TNK would be 4th if I went down further.

On your schedule, I noticed the title of the next ep on the 31st, "The F Word", what do you think could that possibly be? Family? Friends? Fiancee'? 40+% of the shows fans would like to see #3:-) Possibly the start of the relationship they say Daria will have in Sea. 4? I hope it's something along those lines, been wondering who it's with since I heard about it, prolly not Trent, but you never, ever know.

Yeah, the parodies were amusing, but isn't that what they've been doing in the credits for the whole series? Again, it *was* funny, but it was a gimmick. I prefer it when the humor on the show is a little more... cerebral, I guess. ;-)

Depends on your POV, I guess. I still think most TV out-and-out sucks. "Daria" is one of the bright spots, along with... uh... hm... let me get back to you on that. ;-)

What's odd is that all of the other services I usually check didn't have this blurb-- in fact, none of them had blurbs... very odd...

A "Syndication Package" is the rights to schedule and air reruns of a show, which can be sold "in syndication" to local and cable channels.

There is a minimum episode requirement because many channels use syndicated programs for daily programming, whereas most syndicated series were originally weekly. 65 episodes is enough to run 5 days a week for 13 weeks, meaning that no given episode need be repeated more than four times a year (although that might happen anyway, through programmer laziness).

If a series fails to reach the limit, it will be much less interesting to local buyers. The rights might still be picked up by a particularly motivated buyer (e.g., "My So-Called Life" on MTV, "The Tick" on Comedy Central, any number of half-assed space operas on Sci-Fi or pretentious weepy dramas on Lifetime), but the odds are strongly against it ever becoming the kind of dependable cash-cow that producers and networks crave.

It will be interesting to see where programmers put Daria in syndication. I could see it running next to syndicated episodes of The Simpsons, to make an hour block of programming, maybe.

Hey.. I actually *like* Duckman! It's crude, it's vulgar, it's un-PC.. what's not to like? *grin*

The main difference between that and The Man Show is that it actually has some amount of intelligence and humor. The Man Show has *none*. "Duckman" actually has some amount of good writing to offer.

<duckman fan mode>

One of the episodes.. I think it was "America" was pretty good.. and kinda meaningful in a way. It explored the country's ups and downs, and actually treated patriotism with a decent amount of faith and decency. The Clip Job episode made a parody of what everyone criticized Duckman about - as a crude show that was a bad example to everyone. It sort of turned everything around and told folks to take it easy - it's just a damn show, and being PC isn't all that funny anyway. The Pa Pa Oom Mow Mow episode was absolutely *hilarious* in that it made a parody of those gawdawful USA Movie of the Week movies. And the list goes on...

</duckman fan mode>

Before I totally embarass myself by professing a liking for this show, I'll add a little disclaimer and say that I only started watching it this year on CC. I wasn't around in the US when it first aired, and it doesn't show in Malaysia, so that's not really my fault. Ever since watching the first few episodes on CC however, I've been hooked. It's such a shame that the show was pulled.. BEFORE THEY AIRED THE LAST EPISODE AND LEFT A CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!! Does this remind anyone of a certain MTV cartoon that recently got pulled also? Damn these network executives.

I'm not too confident that a Duckman revival will occur.. considering Jason Alexander has literally dropped out of the Hollywood scene. Although there's always hope.. The bad thing about Duckman is there aren't any videos.. so I'm left relying on CC for my weekly fix.

YMMV of course :)
