Why Some Get All Nervous Admitting Jodie's Attitude Is Bad

As the majority of African Americans, Jodie has, by means of previous generations, been conditioned to believe that:

• Blacks are bound to raise above whites.
• Whites owe blacks for the years of slavery they were forced into.

We all get nervous when we think about these issues, as we know what our ancestors did, to embrace slavery, was fundamentally wrong.

Slavery denotes a little thought-of fact: The white society creating the concept was dumb, lazy and greedy. Simply because they were too greedy to pay for labor, or too darned lazy to get the work done themselves, they have opened a can of works for the posterity. Had there been no slavery at all, we wouldn't have this racism problem. No blacks to expect free handouts and scholarships over white folk. No blacks to expect leniency for crimes they commit, blaming ages of oppression for their animalic behavior. Our ancestors should have left them in Africa, and impose strict intelligence standards for those admittable into the New World (as free men, however, and not as slaves).

That's why we're so weary to say "Jodie fucked up". It makes us think that the problem is not Jodie. It is our great-great-etc-parents who allowed for these premises to be built. The problem lies with us.

Quite so. Certainly the majority of racism in the UK is derived more from the resentment over employment after blacks were invited to make up the shortfall in manpower here after the war, and by subsequent immigration which again annoys some people. Whilst the UK cannot ignore the slave situation (we were one of the biggest traders at one time, after all) there are far more recent reasons why racism exists here and, for that matter, in Europe, a lot of it to do with the former colonies that we had (especially ourselves, the French, Dutch, Potuguese and even the Germans). Indeed some of the tension is derived from racism within the very communities that you might expect to be oppressed; black on white, black on black and other interracial strife is just as easy to find as white on black. It's all bad, but before you can tackle the problem, you have to understand how it started and more importantly how it perpetuates itself.

Let it be said that I am not a racist. However, having been exposed to a massive injustice against my niece (whom was denied admission into a college to remain nameless over a less-performing black girl who had to help said college achieve their race diversity quota), I can't help but manifesting a certain bias over the subject of the "Prize Fighters" episode.

If my post was perceived as hatred against blacks, then I deeply apologize to anyone that I have offended. The message was indeed of racist content, and regardless of the skin color of the slaves, it does have some point to it. Just because it is not PC to raise the race issue in this way, it doesn't mean that we should all duck and cover and pretend everything's A-OK.

I know you aren't directing this post to me, but I still respect what you said, nonetheless.

We don't all learn the same lessons from our personal experiences. I once applied for a job at a large company, and was told that they wanted me because the other applicant was Black, and they didn't want to hire a Black person. I decided that I didn't want to work for a company like that, but on very practical grounds: If they could make such an unfair decision about a black person; then they could make an unfair decision about me, someday, too.

"Racial" questions are not simple. I think that's part of what the character of Jodie is intended to express, in "Daria."
