Spoiler space, just in case.
My initial reaction to the episode was "Wow. A dramatic story arc overlying multiple non-consecutive episodes, this is actual storytelling. If word of this gets out, it might irreperably damage MTV's reputation as a supplier of mindless eye- and earcandy."
My second reaction was "My God, I've become a soap opera fan!"
Will Tom ask Daria for a date? Will Daria say yes? Will Jane overcome her resentment toward Daria and salvage their friendship? How will Trent react to the new man in Daria's life? Will Jane react to the loss of Tom by starting a torrid love affair with Andrea?
Obviously, I intended that last one as a joke. But then I went to the Daria website and looked at the movie flipbook. Flipbook10. It's not Andrea, but...I'm sure that it's more innocuous than it looks.
On an unrelated note, Tom lives in a big, fancy house and goes to a prep school; but his car is worse then Trent's. Some sort of counter-wealth statement?
Kinda looks like Monique, too.
Anyway, I don't think Jane's a lesbian. I mean, from what we've seen of her (as far back as #102 "The Invitation," right up to yesterday, when she was making out w/ Tom), I really doubt it. Also, from the Daria FAQ, "...Daria and Jane both stated that they were not lesbians on the "Daria Day" marathon that ran on MTV before Season 2 began."

Just to be helpful, the person that Jane is sitting with is the character that singer Bif Naked is voicing in the movie. I don't know if she's playing herself, but if you know who she is, it definetly looks like her.

I hope not. These last few episodes (like half of season four) have been insane with emotional charge. I hope they don't try to turn Daria into a soap opera. She's still a teenager, and still goes to Lawndale High. I really hope the writers don't try to work in "coincidental" plot twists at every turn. Ohh, I can see it now:

I expected everything....MTV really shouldn't have put the "kiss scene" up online today, that spoiled the ep for me, since I knew what was coming. It was a good episode, but somehow predictiable. Not in a bad way, but...ahh I'm blabbing.
Hey, I just realized something, Tom and Jane dated for exactly one season (313-413).
Oh yeah, wasn't the phone call at the end so contrived? I mean, you just *know* MTV made the Daria bunch stick in a predictable "cliffhanger."

Hmm. Caulking Neil would prevent Neil leaks, like the one involving the episode's content. But feathering Neil ... is he on fire? Will stopping his propellor really help anyone?
Fortunately, I didn't visit the MTV site first. I agree incidentally; the kiss was unexpected, and hence putting it on that clip was a major spoiler.
Watching it the first time, I'll say that I expected Tom's reason for being there to be to in some way tell Daria that he had feelings for her, but I was surprised when he kissed her right out of the blue like that. This was very emotional behavior for Tom, and it implies that he couldn't think of any better way to approach her than to _show_ her how he felt. I've been there :)
That was probably Daria's first real kiss. The clincher though was that _second_ kiss: the first one was kind of "stolen", but in the second one, Daria was clearly an enthusiastic participant. Making it obvious that _she_ has feelings for Tom, too.
I found it powerful and rather shocking, not so much because Daria showed that she had a truly passionate side (I'd always suspected this, it was kind of nice to see it confirmed), but more because of the rupture in Daria and Jane's friendship. Did you notice, incidentally, that Daria is not really capable of being dishonest with Jane, even by omission? (This led, unfortunately, to her telling Jane about the kiss in the worst possible situation ... right in the halls of Lawndale in front of a growing crowd, attracted by the unexpected display of anger between Daria and Jane, whom most of the school probably perceives as a "unit" by now).
The breakup was really sad, not because the relationship could have easily been saved (it couldn't, mostly because Jane was too uncompromising), but because it really tore at me to see _Jane_ so vulnerable. I really think that Jane expected it to last forever, regardless of what she did. And while Jane did things to damage it (being unreasonably angry at Tom, and taking no interest in his interests) she didn't behave _that_ badly.
The worst part of it for Jane is that she's lost both her boyfriend and her best friend. She'll probably make up with Daria (she said she intended to), and may even be friends with Tom again, but it'll be very difficult, especially if Daria goes out with Tom. What's _really_ sad about this is that Jane doesn't make friends easily.
I liked the way in which Trent went out of his way to be with her and try to help her feel better. I'm glad that the writers are handling Trent so much in character ... we've known at least since "Pierce Me" that Trent truly loves his little sister.
When the phone was ringing three possibilities flashed through my mind in quick succession. "Jane? Trent? Tom?", and in that order. I figured it wasn't going to be Jane because they'd done that scene already, and then that Trent probably wouldn't want to speak to Daria right now. I had just gotten to "Tom" when he spoke up.
It was _evil_ to end the episode before Tom got to say anything but "Daria" :)
Sincerely Yours, Jordan

It really was a gutsy move on Tom's behalf, especially after Daria angrily informed him that he screwed up the best thing she ever had in Lawndale (Jane's friendship) and that she wasn't at all interested in him. Throughout the episode, up until that point, Daria had really been trying to avoid Tom. Even when she called to ask where Jane was, as soon as Tom started talking about the parade, Daria cut the conversation short. Then in the car, as soon as Tom even mentioned their "situation" it was enough to burst Daria's emotional wall and she let her feelings out. I'm not even sure if she was as honest with Helen, since we never got to see much of their conversation. Even after Daria and Tom kissed, Daria was quick to run out of the car.

Yikes! Glad I didn't see that.
Predictable...sort of. The kiss came in the heat of an argument; well, that's a new one. Eh, but who am I to nitpick, I haven't written anything in over two years. Daria's speech before that (about her moving to Lawndale, etc.) is definitely her most emotional moment so far in the series. All in all, a very weird episode. Pretty good, but very weird. I'm not sure how, but this episode just felt different...it *sounded* different. And the tension in this episode made last week's look placid.
I've watched it twice now, with breaks for the Daily Show. Seperate from the plot was an interesting Quinn moment with her warning Daria about how bored she'd be if she hung around the house with the Fashion Club around. On one hand, she was probably just trying to keep Daria out of the Fashion Club's sight as usual, but on the other hand, she sounded unusually civil and casual about it. I was also left wondering which of the two things Daria mentioned was the one Quinn denied she would ever do...kiss her best friend's boyfriend or tell her about it?
Interesting, weird, tense episode. Maybe I only complained about the kiss part because Daria's getting more action than I am now. ;)

Happens in real life, too. You do realize that, no matter how strong Daria's feelings for Tom are (and I think that they _are_ pretty strong, both from their interactions last episode and from the fact that after that first kiss Daria stayed in the car and kissed him again), they are bound to be "tainted" in her mind by her knowledge that the whole situation is hurting Jane?
Daria rarely expresses her deeper emotions outright: here she was confirming that she _loves_ Jane. (Which was easy to tell from observation, but it was still a powerful moment). Partially she was telling Tom this because he's known them less than a year; partially I think to remind _herself_ why she shouldn't yield to her attraction for Tom.
Didn't work.
It was "weird" because:
1) Daria normally doesn't _display_ passion of any sort: in this episode she displayed a full range of emotions.
2) Daria and Jane are normally allies against the rest of the world, not rivals.
3) Tom acted in a less than totally sympathetic manner (no, not "evil", but definitely selfish in some bad senses of the word).
4) Trent behaved in an active fashion: he went out of his way both last ep and this to directly affect the course of the events (cause he loves Jane).
5) Finally, Daria's on the cusp of a momentous decision: it is very unlikely that her life can now "return to normal".
I think that Quinn may have sensed that Daria was upset. Jake definitely did, and tried to cheer her up, but didn't kow what to do. Helen realized something serious was wrong with Daria the instant she showed up at her job.

Very well said. These factors combine to make this ep. have sort of a surreal feel to it, so many things unusual to the characters, yet they basically remained in character, how many other shows could pull something like this off? None in Daria's category.
Quinn sensed it, but was caught up in her FC agenda to fully notice, the others I agree on.
True.
Hadn't noticed this, but you're right, I didn't think of how unusual this was for Daria to do, she was in a mental crisis and had no one else to turn to, both her safety valves were off limits, one way or another.
There were so many false assumprions and other items going around, Daria didn't want to further strain her friendship to the possible breaking point over a lie, a lie in Jane's state of mind when she would find ot would destroy everything, it'd be a ticking time-bomb, and Daria cares too much for Jane to do that to her.
A.J.
The minute Daria got into Tom's car I could see it coming from a mile away. However that didn't subtract from the impact of Daria actually kissing someone.
I think the movie will address this, as well as I suspect the fifth season.
Well, you have the main characters acting in particularly emotional states we've not seen from them before. Daria in particular was yelling it seems half the time. Also we did not have the pat "resolved ending" as we do every episode. Nothing's been really resolved and the agonies are just beginning. Also Daria and Jane, even when they weren't in control of the situation, you sensed it was them against the world and now that's lost. Even if they do "get it back somehow," nothing will be the same.
I think he was being honest. About the situation with Jane and his responses to Daria. I wasn't crazy about that smirk after he'd kissed Daria, but maybe it was in the knowledge that she does feel something for him. Also he's probably been in breakups before. He did try to talk about it with Jane at the end, although I don't know how successful he was.
Well, his sister is hurting; it's no time to be a slacker. And if he wasn't going to be honest with Daria, who would?
I think the fifth season's going to focus on this. How it turns out, what will be the aftermath.

What of course made her angrier is that she was being unjustly accused of something she subconsciously _wanted_ to do.

Pissed me off at first, the huge cliffhanger it ended on. Now it occurs to me that this was the best possible way to do it. Something this big _can't_ have a quick neat ending.
Exactly. Neither of them can have the same perfect trust in the other. Which is sad, but that's what happens.
I agree. I don't think that he was deliberately trying to hurt anyone.
I think he's more attracted to Daria than he ever was to Jane. I could theorize many different reasons for this; one _big_ one has to be that she fully appreciates him, including intellectually. She gets the sarcastic little comments that probably whiz right past most people he tries them on. This is probably a big reason that she's attracted to him, to.
Definitely. But what he was saying was _way_ too smooth for Jane. And in some ways wishful thinking on his part.
Not very. Jane obviously didn't want to break up with him. And was not planning to at any point in the future, either. Her earlier episodes of anger at him were attempts to communicate with him, not attempts to drive him away.
Jane's socially inept, and emotionally very inexperienced, no matter the state of her sexual experience. This was her first real love, it meant a _lot_ to her, and she doesn't understand how he can be so calm breaking up with her. The things he said to her (and Daria!) _do_ imply that Jane never meant all that much to him. Certainly not as much as he meant to Jane.
His sister is the reason he isn't _worse_ than a "slacker" most of the time. Jane and Trent pretty much raised each other; they were each other's primary good influences.
Do you realize how hard that conversation must have been for him? Trent's not stupid, he must have realized that his statements would not be well-received. And he was talking to a girl he liked, whom he suspected was becoming interested in his sister's boyfriend.
I agree.

No, nothing's been resolved (Keep saying that!), but you can't blame a guy for trying.
Like I said, someone had to be honest in this situation. Honesty hurts. The one it's intended to and the bearer.
You know, nobody's really discussed the implications of Jane coloring her hair or that portrait. If you do, it's actually good that Tom and Jane broke up when they did. what
It's an open question whether Tom and Jane were ever lovers in the full physical sense of the word or not. Jane comes from a considerably less prudish background than Daria, and is also more impulsive. It's quite possible that she had lost her virginity _before_ meeting Daria. (she was 16-17 when they first met, after all).
Of course that doesn't mean she necessarily had sex with Tom. Especially if Tom's feelings for her were never that strong, he might never have been all that demanding. Tom's a pretty nice guy in general.

She just kept on denying it until the kiss, the Dammit stuff was realization of this fact to her, and she was now hating herself for it.
The idea did seem unfathomable at the time, well it's not anymore.
Exactly, there's no known way you could wrap all of this up in a neat package for a while, hell it may not even be completely resolved in the movie. Still, what were basically 2 cliffhanger endings in a row have got my speculations into overdrive. The writing crew deserves tremendous credit for being able to fit all they did in a 22 minute episode. At firsst I was the same way, that there's no way you're ending it on this, but they did, and now we have a micro-drought before the movie, boy I can't wait!
It may take most of season 5 or some traumatic event in the movie before we see them moving on past something of this magnitude.
This is the main reason, I believe. He's looking for someone on that intellectual level, and in today's world that can be few and far between, he knows he's found someone rare and special, anyone who's tried knows you can't find someone like this just anywhere, anytime. Tom wasn't intentionally trying to hurt anyone, Jane brought this all upon herself.
The same reasons I'd list to explain the above statement.
I'd have swore they were never going to do that again and they may not, but aren't they showing Trent getting more and more mature and responsible, almost as if they're trying to build him up to the level Daria basically wanted from JA. I still think that's dead, but "...it really makes you think"
Same here.

From an external POV, it's easy to see the mistakes she made, though. She took no interest in Tom's interests, and expected him to totally accommodate himself to hers.

This reminds me: what with all the Daria crossover fanfics and so forth, why the hell hasn't anyone done a Cthulhu mythos story with Daria characters? Sure, okay, it wouldn't be great, but it could be one of those "for entertainment purposes only" kind of stories. I dunno. A plot of sorts is slowly developing in my head. Maybe I'll give it a go. ;)

Knights of the Dinner Table. A comic book about a group of friends who are avid Role-Playing Gamers. Anyone who has ever played an RPG _has_ to read it.
Personally, I don't see Daria as the RPG type. I remember an episode (the one with Alternapalooza) in which she seemed to have a negative opinion of SciFi conventions. But she is a writer. Maybe she just hasn't been properly exposed to gaming's interactive storytelling. (God, that phrase sounds pretentious.) And RPG's have long been a haven for socially inept outcasts. Um. So I've heard. ;)

Upchuck's an RPG'er. It's struck me that Andrea might be or might have been at one point, given her interest in fantasy.

Andrea could be one of the girls who probably hangs out with the RPG kids (at least, the more heavy metal variety), but doesn't play them herself because she's too busy writing a vampire novel in which the sexual overtones are so blatant as to be artless. "O Vlad! Pierce me!"
Then again, Daria writes some absolute pulp now and then. the whole "Melody Powers" saga could be straight from the pages of one of those detective fiction mags with the pictures of scatily clad women with guns on the cover.

If she roleplays, she's definitely into the dark fantasy / horror genre. Probably melodramatic stuff with vampires, werewolves, curses and the like.
That's a deliberate parody, though.

Ah yes world of darkness stuff, playde "Vampire : The Masqurade" a lot, really enjoyed it, with a decent gamesmaster, the game will focus on the character interaction, and real role playing, rather than, just thrrowing lots of dice, like D&D has a tendency to decend into :) Oh yeah and Buffy's a wuss, if se ever met out little group of nightstalkers, we'd make mincemeat of her :)
Indeed, McCarthy would probably have liked it tho :) (think about the content.....).

Upchuck is a STERIOTYPICAL (sp) RPG'er, but I doubt that the writers of Daria would buy into stereotypes, and do you mind if I crosspost this into a RPG newsgroup so they can explain how that is wrong. Also, in "Alternapalooza" that's a UFO convention, not a fandom convention (to get a interesting look a fandom, read "Fallen Angels" by Pournelle, Niven, and Flynn). Besides, there are some RPGs that Daria might be interested in (Maybe Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0., Shadowrun, Call of Cthulhu, and the Illuminati and Illuminati: New World Order Card Games).
Besides, if Upchuck played with the knights, Sara Feldon would shove his dice bag, with dice, down his throught (sp?), then turn his books sideways and SHOVE THEM UP HIS ASS, immeadiatly followed by an super atomic wedgie (with the top of his underpants Duct Taped to his chin).

By contrast, the transcripts I've done (101-103, 107, and 208 and later) were created with the help of my ATI All-in-Wonder card's closed captioning feature. The ATI Viewer software allows CC'd text to be written to a disk file, where I then "massage" it (add character attributions and fix the occasional deviation between CC text and what was actually said) to create the transcript. It's time-consuming, but it's preferable to writing it all by hand (it'd take forever!).
And just for clarification, it's "Stickmata 5000." I've seen it referenced in some fanfics as "Stigmata 5000," but "stick" makes more sense (it *is* a glue gun, after all).

I understand your point, but remember:
1) Daria's not a roleplayer. Not necessarily because she hates roleplaying, but simply because she's never had any particular reason to get into it. I don't think Highland had much of an RPG community, and since then she's hung out mostly with Jane, and sometimes Trent or Tom too, and they as far as we know aren't roleplayers.
2) Upchuck obtrudes himself into her awareness via his crush on her and his many crude advances (which probably prevent her from realizing that he has a _real_ crush on her). Hence, if she knows that Upchuck is a RPG'er, she is _not_ acquiring a positive image of RPG's. And I have PERSONALLY KNOWN roleplayers as socially inept as Upchuck ... and _worse_.

Oh, as to Andrea ... I'm basing the assumption that she likes fantasy fiction, and might be into RPG'ing, on her little cartoon strip. It's just a guess, but we don't exactly have a lot to go on.

They did THAT!? ??????????? Why? Wouldn't that ruin it before anyone saw it? Glad I didn't see it beforehand.
I thought something would happen, but not liplock! This episode had more tension and drama than the other 51 episodes have had combined. Kissing after an argument like that is nothing new, I've seen other shows do it, I never saw it coming until the awkward silence they had for a couple of seconds there. Daria summed up the past 2 years (her time) very well with one short speech, then throws it a plot twist almost immediately, very passionate speech, definitely emotional, the most we've ever seen of her. very little humorous here, there was so much, it will take many viewings to understand everything that went on here.
I'd guess tell her friend, but that's only a guess.

:) That sure sounds like what's going on anyway!!! MTV is the most hideous, vile thing available on television today. The only decent part worth saving is Daria (Downtown already lost the battle). MTV doesn't even show music videos anymore! If I want to see a music video (I must be REALLY bored now...) I usually watch the Canadian Much Music. MTV only supports established bands, one hit wonders, boy bands, and pop tarts.
I know this has been discussed before, but too bad Daria isn't on a different network. About the only thing that even remotely links the show to MTV is the background music. However, all of the other networks available have problems too. Comedy Central isn't mature enough. VH1 is almost as bad as MTV. Cartoon Network is aimed at a very young audience. Discovery Channel or The Learning Channel wouldn't be too awful, but Daria isn't exactly educational. NBC, ABC, CBS, TNT, WB... *shudder*.... I guess our only solution is the ADN: All Daria Network. :)

I think it's a mistake to think boy bands or their female equivalents have anything to do with music. They exist purely for adolescents to have crushes about. The only reason they sing is because they'd look kind of dumb if they stood there doing nothing. It's interesting to compare the West with Japan in this respect. There they also have sexy idols for people to fantasise about, but traditionally they don't sing but just pose for photos etc. However as Western culture continues to make inroads, some Japanese idols have taken to singing too, as it gives them something to do when appearing in public before their fans.
Fortunately, away from the hype of glossy charts shows, good music continues to be produced by real musicians, just as it always has.

I think Daria would LOVE Arcadia (1985-era Duran Duran splinter group with Simon, Nick, and Roger). Their music is very dark and moody, but also quite romantic as well. The 13-year-old daughter doesn't get pregnant from wanting to look like Britney Spears. She gets pregnant when the parents fail to talk openly about sex and the consequences of sexual activity with her.
Nahh, most kids know about sex. She gets pregnant because britney spears et al taught her that women are for sex. She knows she *should* use a condom, but when some guy doesn't want to use a condom she decides that the risk of pregnancy is less important than fulfilling her role as a female.
Well that's odd because I've never seen Britney Spears fucking a guy and getting pregnant on TV. Could you tell me what time that's on, because I don't want to miss it. I'll put my VCR on timer for THAT one, Britney shagging some guy right on TV. All I ever see her do is dance around like a dork and lip-sync to that dopey music of hers. And if Britney Spears is teaching this girl that women are for sex, what are her teachers and her parents and her friends teaching her? What has she taught herself?
Maybe we should agree to disagree. This seems like the beginning of a long debate, and I'm not willing to go on and on about it. Especially when I'm hardly convinced my position is correct anyway.
I'll never believe that television causes anyone, at any age, to be other than what they are already. If she does some guy at 13, it's because nobody taught her any self-respect or anything.

I'd watch it. But I'd be too busy taping to watch anything else . . . I totally need a splitter switch.
I was thinking about this too, but I went over the same list as you did above and came to an unescapable, albeit rather shocking, conclusion: short of that All Daria Network, MTV is the best channel for Daria to be on. Except maybe HBO, but then you'd have to pay for HBO. I mean, can you imagine Daria on a network? Daria on ABC or NBC... the show would be a distant memory by now, just like My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks. Shows that even get close to any kind of realistic portrayal of life don't make it on network TV. They don't get enough ratings, and ratings are EVERYTHING on the networks, so they die a quick death. On cable, you can get away with having MUCH lower ratings.
have you WATCHED mtv lately? all they show is real world reruns and nsync behind the scenes crap....the only videos they show are during TRL.

*giggle* Don't worry. I'm not really angry at you or saddened or anything. I really wish I *did* have satellite TV because of MTV2 and BBC America, but it's okay. I have "Daria", and "Whose Line is it Anyway?", and tons of videos to tide me over until I can afford my own satellite TV system.
I can tell.
Hey, don't be frightened of me. PLEASE don't feel frightened of me. As the only good bit of advice I got when training for work can be paraphrased, "I'm not angry at you, I'm angry at the situation".
PLEASE girl. You haven't done anything to deserve my wrath and anger.
Um, actually that's only enough to make me only the slightest bit jealous. Heh. Hell, the only thing that makes me intensely jealous is hearing that someone actually landed front row tickets to a 1984 Duran Duran concert *PLUS* backstage passes *and* has the "Into the Arena" game *and* Nick Rhodes' "Interference" book of photography. If you had that, I would have reason to be jealous.
Nonononononononono. PLEASE no sympathy. Please. Just accept my apologies for making you feel sorry. I did not aim for that. I was just venting, sweetie. Thanks, though.
*hugs*,

At least you *saw* it. Because of a rain-storm, right after the commercial break was over and "Act 3" was supposed to start, my sattelite dish lost its signal. Luckily, it reconnected, so I saw from the scene where Daria is talking to Quinn in the kitchen on to the end. Can anyone tell me what I missed?
The reason it was so predictable was because...... YOU SPOILED YOURSELF!
No hard feelings, just had to do that.

The great irony here was Daria's rhetorical question, earlier that same episode, "Can you _really_ see me making out with _anyone?_" Ok, she didn't exactly "make out" with Tom, but the _second kiss_ (which Tom did _not_ steal, unlike the first one) was definitely passionate.
Yes. In most sitcoms, animated or not, Daria would be frozen into her "role" as if it were a magical mind control prison.
Sincerely Yours, Jordan
I guess her "Dammit! Dammit, dammit, dammit!" after the kiss proves, if nothing else, that she *is* Jake's biological child.
