New Daria season opener

This new Daria episode really kicks ASS. I just won't be able to sleep tonite.

I don't think I've included any material in the general discussion that might spoil. Let me know if I've guessed wrong. It'll take some time for me to get up to speed on this procedure.

I LIKE IT!

It's wonderful. And to think some people were worried that it might suck. Not only another great Daria episode with lots of new things to look at and laugh at but a great parody of the musical theater art form and of movie versions of musical theater. Yet well-crafted enough to stand on its own. Think of it as actually BEING a musical. The split-screen technique in the "Don't They Know" number reminded me of the same technique in the movie version of "Grease." Also Jake's number "God-Goddammit!" brought to mind the "A Chorus Line" number "Tits and Ass" for being similarly irreverent. I suppose some people might be upset at exposing the tykes to such language, but as I keep reminding people, Daria isn't really intended as a kid's show.

Of course I'm not really a musical fan so maybe I'm not qualified to make judgements.

They obviously spent some time on the songs. Music and lyrics are written and performed with a seriousness of purpose that again suggest that this was really intended to BE a musical and not just a silly rip-off of a musical. If you have any doubts consider the spotlight on Daria during the "They must be worried" number. (Very effective art technique too, BTW) By taking the musical form seriously they made it work as comedy. Another milestone in television history.

The hurricane story was just about perfect for this particular style. If the hurricane story had been attempted in the more usual Daria style it might have been quite difficult to make it entertaining and funny. The counterpoint made it balance out just right.

The choreography in the "Manly" number seemed a little lame at a couple of points but not unreasonably so. It's tolerable.

Another good job by the Daria creative team. They attempted something daring that might have turned to disaster but pulled off a good job. The record stands: there are still NO bad Daria episodes. I was entertained--all I can really expect. Obviously still very much a Daria episode as the usual Daria humor, satire, and sarcasm are intact.

There was real character development and revelation, which puts it above the category of mere parody. Though there were some MAJOR satirical elements (but of course, it's Daria after all!)

All the talk of goddammits makes me think of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is probably the only musical I've ever enjoyed. Were there any Rocky Horror references in Daria?

Agreed! I figured it was gonna be good so I set up the VCR -- and goofed it up royally. Argh! Oh well, they'll re-run it.
