Jane/Jesse

Hey all - just watching my tape last night, in preparation for Monday's new episode, and got to "That Was Then, This is Dumb", and was wondering:

Does anyone else think that Jane seriously needs to go looking for a new main squeeze? I mean, I can understand that she's not exactly seeking "love and romance" or a particularly deep relationship [ref: "Bobby Bighead & the Sock"], but she can certainly do much better than a guy who's obviously not even VAGUELY appreciating her mind, personality, wit, or this particular plane of reality for that matter.

Just my thoughts [yes, I'm well aware this is a cartoon, but who hasn't tried to think out life's little issues for favorite characters in fictional media? :) ], and before anyone asks, I don't have any suggestions for who she should link up with instead. Most of Lawndale is only slightly above Highland, realistically.

Oh, and regarding the other thread for Daria & Trent just getting it over with and "doing it" -- I think Trent should at least have the gumption to ask her out first [and for a while, at least -- call me a prude :) ].... save her from dating total goofballs like YearBook Lad, who would've made ME look cool and interesting in high school, and at the time I was sure that would've taken divine intervention.

If i've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. In real life, they would be a lot happier together. But on a TV show, it's much more interesting for the tension that is there between Trent and Daria. Maybe on the last episode, but I hope that is nowhere near coming around. As for Jesse and Jane, I think it shows Jane's human side, the part that goes for the attractive guy, not the one that you described. Jane needs things like this to contrast against Daria's cynicism and the image she exudes that she is above the affairs of mere mortals. I don't think Daria feels that way, but to the casual observer, that is what it looks like.

My impression has always been that Jane only ever "paired off" with Jesse for the sole purpose of pushing Daria closer to Trent, by depriving Ms. Morgendorffer of the opportunity to avoid Trent by hiding behind Jane...as she does whenever Jane lets her. There's *never* been any indication that she's ever sought out Jesse's company -- except when that foursome is together. Jane is no wallflower; if she were interested in a fling with someone, she would come out and say so, and then act on it...as she did in "The Invitation" when she got that bonus sock. She wouldn't stand passively by and wait for a boy to notice her, least of all someone as oblivious as Jesse.

I just hope that people aren't automatically assuming that Jane "needs" a main squeeze, or is even looking for one. She's fine on her own, and she knows it.
