Hard to say. Daria was _really_ nervous and paranoid then, so it might have backfired. It sounds too much like an accusation.
I have to say that Tom was being _really_ nice in this ep, and really understanding of what Daria was going through. I think I was wrong about him: he's truly a nice guy.
It's interesting, though, that Daria seems to have actually thought this -- that Tom would dump her essentially for not "putting out."
Incidentally, the thing she _really_ did that was obnoxious was _telling him she was going to have sex with him and then standing him up_. Now THAT would have pissed off a lot of _nice_ guys -- from his reaction, I'd say he really _does_ love her.
I think Daria's thinking that Tom would dump her for not "putting out", as you put it, might've been based in part on what some guys would do if a girl refused to have sex with the guy. I do think there are guys who would dump girls for not having sex with him. Daria badly underestimated Tom on that account.
I also think that Daria should've at least called him to let him know she wouldn't be over, but it's entirely possible she was so confused and scared she didn't think straight. Still, that's not really an excuse.
And yes, after this episode, I would have to say Tom really * does * love her.
I really don't think that's what she thought. Her line about "sex would bring us closer together so not having sex must be driving us apart" is more to the point. The immediate point.
But the deeper point is something else she told Tom, which I don't think he *completely* allowed to sink in. She's scared - seriously scared. It's about something Tom said to her in IIFY: that if she allowed herself to really care about someone it would make her vulnerable. I think that's what's really going on. Remember, in IIFY she looked for an excuse to dump him, too.
And maybe she really loves him, and it scares the **** out of her.
yep, there are plenty of guys who'll dump girls because of that. my first boyfriend was like that. he did the whole "it's okay, i respect your decision", then after a few months, he got a bit too horny with no outlet besides his hand ;).
and unfortunately, there are a *lot* of decent guys out there, but they're almost completely overshadowed by jerks like that (especially during the teenage years). i don't blame daria for being paranoid about something like that, because cases like that are more common than most would like. :/
oh most definitely.
by the way, this is my first post, so hello! :). i've lurked on this group since season 3, but never gathered the courage to actually post. when i realised that daria will soon be ending, i figured i'd like to join in before it's too late :).
Welcome! You've been here a while, so no need to point out the location of the snack tables (flat *and* ridgy chips available!). Bathrooms are in the back, and the fridge is fully stocked with a large assortment of beverages (both alcoholic and not). No doubt you've noticed that things can get a little heated around here, but for the most part, our debates are conducted with an acceptable level of civility and maturity. Just avoid the trolls and you'll be fine. :-)

I agree. I never dated in my high school years, so I missed a lot of chances to act like the King of the Jerks, but I was so completely clueless about women and sex that I'm grateful I didn't get more involved. (I've been married for almost fourteen years, so I've definitely improved since then. ^_^) For a teenaged boy, Tom is a prince.
Hi! Welcome! I'm also a longtime lurker, and I only started posting back in March, but I love it here. The regulars are some of the best people in Usenet; the trolls can be a pain, but they're easily ignored.
I don't know that it'd put her on the defensive. She'd be there already. But it sure wouldn't disarm her, either.
Besides, I think he knew the answer to that question already. To ask it would be, as you said "a counterattack." It wouldn't be honest. It'd be playing a head game. So far, it seems that's not Tom's style. (Yo! Diogenes! Check this'n out!)
Had this same situation happened with Jane, maybe that's exactly what he'd say. Because maybe it'd be an honest question.
But you can tell that he was hurt that she actually thought that about him.
