I just thought it would be fun to send this survey out and see what you guys have to say about the show. Mostly because I'm bored, but I'm curious too.

I guess I'll start.
1. I've been a fan since the show first started airing, though I'm not sure how long ago that was.... 2. I'm sort of partial to Jane, because she's smart and cynical but is just a little more ambitious and upbeat than Daria. Plus, she's artistic and observant. She reminds me of myself, actually. :-) 3. I'd have to say "Road Worriers." I don't know why, but that episode has stuck with me since the first time I saw it. Maybe it's because Daria has the attitude that I tend to have on a long road trip. But I also like "Dye! Dye! My Darling" because *that* definitely sticks with you. Shakes things up a bit, I guess. 4. I don't really have one, but I guess I'd have to say "Daria!". The first couple of times I watched it I thought it was okay, but unlike other episodes that I can watch forever and never get tired of, this one kind of wears me out now. It's just not quite as funny as it used to be, IMO. 5. Absolutely! I'm taping it, since unfortunately the ONE day I go on an all-day outing is the day it airs. Hopefully I'll get back in time to see it all though. 6. Read my previous post, "some thoughts on the show". 7. I'm pretty sure I will. I mean, unless it gets *really* bad, but I doubt that will ever happen. Daria's always been a smart show, and even though it's on MTV I don't think it will ever sink very low.

i first caught a dariathon one morning whilst recovering from a night of drunken antics. i think that might have been the time me and my friend tried to see who could refill our empty 40s the fastest. um, never mind. anyway, it was after the first season, i know, and we were in a college dorm room, so i'm gonna say "fall of 1997" and leave it at that.
guy fawkes day! but seriously....
aside from daria and jane (the obvious heroines of the series), i'd say it's a toss-up between trent and tom. trent because my girlfriend tells me i acted exactly like him back before we were dating ("i gotta go practice with the band tonight..." whatta poser!), and i know a lot of other people exactly like him, and tom just because he's a good character who has caused daria's entire world to fall apart, which makes for interesting drama. and i like andrea a lot, too. actually, make that andrea. maybe.
i'm going to resist saying #413 (even though i can't seem to stop re-watching it) and go with "Lane Miserables." although "Fire!" may be tied with it.
any of the "daria gets forced into some school activity" eps, although "just add water" may be my least, least favorite. there were enough pop culture references in "the daria hunter" to at least keep me alert. i still think "depth takes a holiday" has its own charm. guy fawkes day rules the landscape! and "daria!" is even watchable, if only for jake's road rage anthem.
yes, hell yes, and freakin' hell yes. watch it, tape it, touch it, feel it, love it. unless it sucks.
yes. the characters are becoming more and more three dimensional and real. the occasional throwaway episode isn't bad, as long as it's not totally contrived, but i really go for the classics that show character development.
yeah. unless they start introducing huge dramatic plots that get resolved neatly in 22 minutes. that kinda mediocrity might hurt to watch.
Wayne never really did anything for me, and I've never seen any of the movies. I think I'm the only person alive who hasn't, actually, so feel privileged to talk to a freak, everyone! ;D And all the Linda Richman sketches are the same!

I thought it was too, the first time I posted that, but then I reread it and thought "Dieter? A person who diets?" Then again, I don't even know if there is such a word as dieter, since I can't imagine a situation in which one would use it . . . but I have no idea . . . *trails off into a sort of murmur*
Other than Daria, I'd have to say Tommy Sherman... :-) Actually, I think I have to go with Helen here. Though she tries to be a superwoman and have a great career and be a good parent, and seemingly can't handle it, she's been there when Daria's needed her most.
I can't single out one. It's impossible. But overall, "Fire!" and "Dye! Dye! My Darling" from this season, "Write Where It Hurts," "I Don't," "Misery Chick," there's more I'm forgetting....and I still have a soft spot for "Pinch Sitter" and "The Big House" from Season 1.

I watched a few episodes out of the first and second season when they first came out, but I don't think I started watching all the time until sometime mid-second season.
I like all of the characters because they all add to the show. After Daria, Jake is my favorite character because even if the rest of the episode is completely lame, he'll always say something funny.

Probably, but I would be turned off if the show turned more sexual or sleazy... I don't know why... I guess the thought of cartoon characters sleeping together is kind of unsettling to me. :)

* Hell yeah. Even though I'll be in Vegas worshipping my beloved aged glam rock beauties (Duran Duran) at the time the movie premieres, I'm setting my VCR and giving strict instructions to my parents not to touch the VCR or the TV.
* I love it. I love the way they're heading. I think it's a major show of how quality the "Daria" outfit is, how they're naturally progressing and the character development is gradual and all.
* I don't think "Daria"'s ever going to become lame, not if the creative team who's been behind the show since the beginning keeps overseeing what's happening. But in any case, I'll still keep on watching. I'm usually really loyal to something I declare I'm a fan of. I mean, I've been a hugely wild DD fan since 1991 and there's no sign of me stopping that at any time....
More or less since the beginning. Well, I watched the premiere of "Esteemsters" and was unimpressed, but a bit later I decided to give it another chance. I tuned in to "Pinch Sitter" and was hooked.
Predictable, I know, but I have to go with Daria. I wish I was *that* outspoken in high school. :-{)>
I suppose I'm gonna have to go with nostalgia and say "Pinch Sitter." 1st runner up: "Road Worrier." Of the recent episodes, "Dye! Dye! My Darling!" certainly stands out, in that it managed laughs in between the serious subject matter.
Ther has only ever been one Daria episode I ever *really* disliked. That would have to be "Legends of the Mall." IMO, the only one of the "fantasy" episodes with *no* redeeming qualities.

I think it's good for the show, if they don't forget they're first and foremost a comedy and get all dreadfully "serious." Fortunately, it doesn't look as though there's any danger of that; the writers look like they know what they're doing ("Legends..." notwithstanding).
I think the only thing that would cause me to stop watching the show is if the original writing staff left, leaving only people who don't care about the show or character continuity and utter contempt for the shows fans...like a certain ex-favourite of mine which has grown quite painful to watch new episodes of. I wonder if anyone can think of which show I'm referring to.

Daria, guess I relate to her, I feel a lot of her pain, as I was also an outcast, at school, "one of those who survived". I have a sorta soft spot for Quinn too, cause I think there's more to her than meets the eye.

Don't know if Jill answered you or not yet, but...Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the creators of "South Park". Trey Parker rocks! Why? Because he's a mega Duranie! He inserted "Rio" into the last "South Park" Christmas special, was seen being way happy backstage after last year's Duran Duran L.A. concerts, interviewed Nick Rhodes for "Interview" magazine, and said he loves the latest album, "Pop Trash". AND I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up again to watch this year's DD L.A. concerts.

Oh god, "EastEnders". I watched a couple of eps of it when I was doing my London package tour deal and it's downright dreadful. Aside from the fact that I actually got to see Gary Kemp (!) acting in a soap, nothing else was of much interest to me. My sig other says "Coronation Street"'s better, but I never got a chance to see that.
And "Dallas"...heh. "Who shot J.R.?" indeed. Hm. "Who shot Jane?" "Who shot Tom?" "Who shot Stacy?" This could have some fanfic possibilities.... *evil grin*
Well they're both soap operas, so a no go for me, actually to be honest I did used to sorta watch Eastenders when it first started in 1986(??), but it *WAS* better back then. Actually prolly the only thing that could remotely be considdered as a soap that I watched on a long time basis, was "Grange Hill", which is about an comprehensive school in London, though that was also better when it first started, and it's also supposedly a "young adults" program, though I do seem to rember it generating a bit of a stink when it first started back in 1978, cause all the parents went "is it really like that ?".....yep and much worse I'm afraid. Anyway I digress....

I was being cynical, I figured most people would catch that, I dont find any of those three topics particularly internesting, seriously, PBS has some excellent documenties, however this comming from someone who hopes to be a jouranlist with the BBC or CBC so I love the news..
However, I may be a complete pig for this, but I found the "Lost Children Of Rockdale County" more entertaining than just about anything else I saw last year. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/georgia/ There is something about a ton of 13 yearolds who are predominently southern baptists in a very wealthy suburb of Atlanta getting syphilis that is funny to me, its on the same level as a conservitive politican getting caught with his pants down in an ally (no pun intended) with a whore.

I saw this on its original airing and was scared and saddened by it. *THEN* Oprah did a thing on her show the day before the re-airing, and of course my mom happened to catch it that time. It scared the *CRAP* out of her. I was planning a trip to Toronto at the time, and had already received parental permission. My mother said that if she'd seen that show before permission had been given- it wouldn't have been. That show also sparked a wonderful conversation in which I had to say to both my parents, "I'm still a virgin, CALM DOWN!" I imagine mine would have as well. My parents are unbelievably conservative thinkers and they still hold onto the notion of "acting like a lady" and all that jazz.

Oh gosh. My parents have been straitlaced all their lives. If you can imagine the stereotype of 1950s teenagers and imagine them growing up throughout the years, those are my parents. My dad used to have problems with alcohol, but that was a good ten years before I was born. Anyways, they've kept with that particular mindset, so I had really strict parents. In fact, they would SO freak if they found out ANYTHING about what I've posted online. Although I do feel comparatively spoiled because I have so many opportunities my parents never had (like going to college). I feel so lucky being able to go to a university.

My parents are both socialists who can't account for their wherabouts from 1970 to 1973. Any Questions? Although it would appear they were deported from the United States in November of 1972. And in the basement I have found pictures of an old VW Minibus full of people and animals, so I am not sure I want to know.
But like most old school socialists, today my parents are both Yuppies now, My father is a financial analyast and my mother a corporate spindoctor, I can only imagine how my parents would react to what I have written online, as they have a totally unspoiled virginal image of me.

Oh no, My father isn't an alcoholic HIS father is. I have only met my grandfather three times most recently when I was eleven, I couldn't imagine growing up with a father like that, I come from a big military family, my father is the first man in generations not to join the military, he is also a republican, which makes for a huge rift between him and his father who would probably give his life for a rat in Buckingham Palace. Sending him to a military school hoping to make a redcoated monarchist out of him kinda strained their relationship. I should probably go visit my grandfather one of these days.
I think it's sad, mostly. 13-year-old kids not only sexually active, but already catching STD's (which implies that they are on the average more than just a _little bit_ sexually active). Aren't rich Southern Baptists human beings too?

You're absolutely correct ... but these are still humans who for some reason have become very morally degenerate. They can't have been real happy with themselves, even before they got VD.

Most of the ones where they try to jam as many characters into the story. Daria Dance Party worked, but that's an exception.
Is Carson Daly annoying?
If they decide to go through with a Tom/Daria romance, it will be interesting to see how that alters the dynamic of the series. Personally I thought this was one of the best seasons; nothing really offended me at all. If they can keep that going into the fifth season, I'll be in heaven.
Actually, if I may, I would like to say that I was one of those kids who LIVED off of PBS' children's programming and thusly became a PBS viewer from early on. I loved the "Mystery!" series with Patricia Routledge in it (I think her detective's name was Hedda Wainthropp but I'm not sure), and I love Ms. Routledge in the reruns of "Keeping Up Appearances" PBS shows (when I can get a chance to catch an ep, that is). I *LOVED* watching "Are You Being Served?" reruns on PBS when they aired it and I miss it a lot. I also love "Goodnight Sweetheart" (if I could get the theme song in MP3 format I would be a v. happy woman) and "As Time Goes By" (with my favorite actress, Dame Judi Dench). I love the BBC World News on PBS, and there are some great documentaries on the show "P.O.V." There's also "Nova", "Julia Child" (she's so ancient but you've got to love her spunk), anything Helen Mirren comes out in, "Dessert Circus" (I don't know if they still show that), "Travels in Europe", "Frontline" (I *LOVE* when "Frontline" takes a look at a country in Africa or in the Middle East as those are my two favorite places in the world to study), and so much more. To me there's nothing boring about PBS, unless I happen to stumble onto some of the newer children's programming. I mean, nothing can beat the old standards of "Sesame Street" and "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood", or the other programs I loved to watch like "The Voyage of the Nimh" (with a YOUNG Ben Affleck, whom I wanted to befriend as a little girl (!)), "Square One", and (OMG, I miss the old eps) "3-2-1 Contact". "The Bloodhound Gang" ROCKED my prepubescent world.

Are they still making new Red Dwarf episodes? I've managed to see the first 6 seasons thanks to my local library, but nothing past that (though I know there's at least 2 more seasons).
And I've heard good things about Blake's 7, though I can't find any of those tapes... Is it good?
You should count yourself lucky that you haven't seen them. Red Dwarf went seriously downhill in the last two seasons. Despite this I hear they are threatening to make another.
Well there was a new season about a year ago, Paul who I work with might know more, I'll try and rember to ask him monday :)
Yeah, excellent character interaction, and if you ignore the wobbly sets and dubious props, then yeah good sci-fi. Though I hasten to add definatly not in the Star Trek mold, as the good guys only 'win' about 50% of the time.
William Hartnell & Pete(?) Troughton where the first two people to play Dr Who. Another programme killed buy guest actors and crap scripts, oh and the then director of BBC drama's utter contempt for sci-fi (IMHO of course).
Gotta love a show where the title character vanishes after the final episode of Season 2 and doesn't reappear until the final episode of Season 4. And then there's the final episode. It takes guts to end a show by having the villains kill all of the heroes.

I watched Romper Room and Kimba the White Lion in 1966. Possibly earlier. And I can remember when our NET (National Educational Television, precursor to PBS) affiliate's afternoon lineup was "Friendly Giant," "Sesame Street," "Misterogers' Neighborhood," and "What's New."
I can remember when the grownups thought of "Sesame Street" as something new and faintly disconcerting.
Oh, what synchronicity. When this thread first came up, my beloved and I started talking about the TV of our youth. (I was born in '58, she in '59). She loved Kimba. I always wanted to see him get poached. Either that, or start acting like a *real* lion and gnaw the guts out of a gazelle or something. ("But he was so *cute*!" says Deb. Would've been cuter with some vivid red bloodstains around the muzzle, say I.)
I think "Sesame Street" postdates NET. I remember watching the other three on WQED-13 when it was still an NET affiliate, and in fact the little NET house among the Plasticville models of the opening and closing credits on Mr. Rogers. As I recall the changeover to PBS happened just before or simultaneous with the premiere of Sesame Street. I could be wrong about that, though.
I remember watching the very first episode of Sesame Street with my younger brother and sister, and thinking that it still wasn't as good as The Friendly Giant. Slicker, but not better. And "What's New?" I loved that one.

Incidently, I also remember the ones that McDonald's used to have, back when McD's used to have outdoor playgrounds, and GOOD food. I think I only suffered motion sickness once on it, but a good test of clustrophobia could be achieved by going in the Mayor McCheese jail-like structure. Boy I had some fun times there!

Mine is currently in a state of suspended animation (handing on a clothesline down in the basement). Don't ask why I still have it, it was just uncovered sometime ago, and was washed to almost mint condition, along with my Care Bear (I think it was Sleepy Bear). Boy was the '80s really so goo-goo.

My old Sit and Spin and Glo-Worm are in the garage, I have all of my Barbies in the attic and I recently purchased a brand new Snoopy Sno (specifically omitted w) Cone Machine from Snoopy.com as a gift for one of my friends. You've never lived until you replace alcohol with the syrup that comes in the package. It's oddly decadent to make an amaretto Snoopy Sno Cone :)
Me? None of the above. I think my youngest sister had a Sit and Spin. And I got my kids a couple of Transformers. Or were they Go-Bots? I can't remember, but they're probably in the basement with the Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures.
I'm a child of the '60s. Born in 1958, actually. I grew up with Creepy Crawlers (with the original hot plate "Thing Maker", not the Easy-Bake oven lightbulb version of the '80s) rod hockey, erector sets, and lots of good, wholesome wood and plastic weaponry. No GI Joe, though. My brother had one of them. <Jake> It was an action figure! </Jake> No, it was a doll.
Transformers were generally a lot larger than Go-Bots...Go-Bots were more like Hot Wheels/Matchbox car size. Of course, around the late eighties/early nineties (can't remember which), the company that made Transformers acquired the rights to the Go-Bot name and produced a Transformers subline with that name...basically a business move to stamp out the competition.

None of the above. Some might have been after my time, though. (I'm 31.) I had Legos, Lincoln Logs, baseball stuff, and all the electical stuff I could scrounge up.
I think I watched 3-2-1-Contact when I was very little, but then we didn't have a TV for several years, and only CBS and NBC even then.
Think of it as a record turntable. You sit on it, grab the stationary "wheel" in the middle, and spin yourself around like crazy. One of our local McDonald's playgrounds had this huge sit-n-spin thing that caused more than one instance of messy motion sickness...
I'm more a child of the late eighties; I didn't have any of those things (maybe a Transformer), but I saw a lot of these things in yard sales and other places where hand-me-down toys were prevalent.

I lost my first baby tooth on a Sit & Spin! What a great toy for making yourself and your friends sick! I never had the Snoopy Sno-Cone Machine, but I remember seeing it advertised on TV. Glo-Worm? Must be a bit after my time. I know I was too old for Go-Bots and Transformers by the time they hit the market (Ditto for Cabbage Patch Kids, but I doubt I would have deigned to ask my parents for one, what with that gender consciousness that Americans love to instill on their kids since birth). I'm more a child of the 70's. I can remember when Spirograph still came with pins! Those plastic brackets sucked! They punched oversize holes in the paper, and would rip holes in your drawing when the pen went over it. Give me sharp, dangerous pins any day. %-{)>

I didn't have one, but I did get to enjoy one at daycare when I was four. My little sister got one for her birthday, but I was too old to enjoy it much then.
I had one of those. We mixed Kool-Aid somehow to come up with the syrup. Then we pulled the roughly textured red rubber hat off of Snoopy and filled him with sugary tropical punch goodness. Always a treat, I think it was used less than a dozen times. Always good to have a toy that can cut you and stain anything.
My little sister had each of these. First, she had the Cabbage Patch knockoff, then she got a real one, followed by a preemie. I remember getting a Practical Periphrials graphics tablet for my TI-99\4A at the same time.
Had a couple. Can't remember the names. There was the Datsun 240 police car, a red Lamborghini Countach, the red Dodge Caravan, the Porsche 959, and the Jeep. I also had Optimus Prime, but I think there was something different about the one I had vs. the regular model. It came with a rather sizable trailer. I also had the little cassette tape-sized robots. I also had a Transformers electric toothbrush set. The toothbrush was shaped like Optimus Prime. He had one arm raised, and at the top was a toothbrush that rocked back and forth. The set also included a cup with the logo on it. And then there was the voice changer thingy. Supposed to turn it on, put a little hose on the back of the unit somewhere in your mouth and talk. Never worked. If you watch the 2Pac "California Love" video, the guy doing the robotic sound background vocals has a hose hanging out his mouth... probably the same principle. I think I had one Go-Bot, and it was shaped like a Ferrari F-40. On a related note, did anyone have the Takai digital watches that popped off the wristband and changed to robots? I still have both of mine; a black one, and one with an AM radio and a black and chrome finish. -mike

I had a Transformer, but by accident. You see, someone Mom worked with at the time thought she had a son because at the time I had a short page boy haircut and Mom had a picture of me like this in her office, so this co-worker gave Mom a Transformer for her child to play with. Well, Mom walks in and tells me a co-worker wanted me to have this, so I at first eye this questioningly (I had no idea what the Transformers were) and then I shrug and play with it happily. Whenever I was bored I would take it out and start playing with it.
Since the first commercial aired for it. ^_^ I saw it and said "Dude, that looks like an actually *good* show!" I didn't realize she was from B&B untill later on though; and I had always liked her there.
Hmm... I don't know, really. They all add to the show. Though, a lot of people say that I'm a lot like Jane.

Probably Daria - I'm most like her I guess. I've been described as a cross between Daria and Jodie... I'm involved in many things but people don't like me because I'm not "perky" and I routinely mock them for their stupidity. Daria's my inspiration for many a one-liner.

I really like "Through a Lens Darkly" and "Pierce Me" ("You didn't see a weeping virgin or anything" -Daria). Yes I'm a Daria-Trent shipper but I'm not sure if I _really_ want them to get together on the show... IMO it would ruin a lot of genuinely funny elements of Daria. I'm content with shipper fanfics.
It's a toss up between "A Tree Grows in Lawndale" (way way way too much Kevin and Brittney - I wanted to poke my eardrums out) and "Depth Takes a Holiday" (though Guy Faukes Day was cute - "So why do I want to deck him all the time" -Jane)

I'm not quite sure yet. Last week's episode was... confusing. I really have to see how the whole thing turns out (I'm being purposely vague so I don't spoil it for anyone) before I make any judgements. I do have to say that I like the new animation style a lot.

Not as long as some others. Season 3. I forget exactly when. But I've seen reruns of many season 1 & 2 shows.
Daria. For the ways she's like me: bookish, intelligent, sarcastic. A smart person in a dumb world. And a hidden (or at least until now) passionate side.
I found it interesting that so many people listed "Daria!" as their least favorite episode, because it's been my favorite. I rerun it whenever the mood strikes and lip-sync along. A perfect parody of a musical but a real Daria episode too - the characters aren't JUST singing. An incredibly creative idea for an episode - but only as a one-time thing. A sequel would probably be horrible.
I'm still thinking over "Dye!", since it's so recent. Very moving. I won't say more since I didn't put a spoiler warning in. By the way, if there's anything I hate about "Dye! Dye! My Darling!", it's the title. I would have preferred "The Lady or the Tiger". If they had to use the word "dye" in the title, how about "To Dye For" or "Dye Hard" or "Live and Let Dye" or anything but what they did.
The F Word. The biggest failure of all in the episode was its failure to entertain me.

Well, perhaps "old fart" *is* a bad turn of phrase. LOL! However, I find it fascinating that there are fans of this show that are not only teens (not that I have anything against any teen fans here <waving!>), I am just a bit surprised, is all. I guess demos mean squat when a show is done well. As someone here said, most other places I see, the "Daria" fans are early to mid-teens, and I felt ancient.
Also, just to be picky...I think my age, now that I think of it, is more *late*-20s, rather than mid-20s. Sigh. (I'll be 28 soon, and I am already trying to hide my age! <G>)
Now that I have stopped babbling, I just want to say thanks for the welcome and great discussions/debates.
I think most people who make children's programmes intend them to be enjoyed by adults too, after all they're adults themselves and they're unlikely to make something that doesn't appeal to themselves. Not that Daria is a children's programme as such but the same thing applies.
On atd people's age is largely irrelevant. On occasions when it's come up there doesn't seem to be any real correlation between people's age and their level of maturity or insightfulness. In fact if there is a relation at all it's probably an inverse one. atd seems to be an isolated pocket of the Net in this respect though.
I think there are some people here in their 40s, in fact. Which is interesting to note as most "Daria" online fan communities seem to be teeming with teenagers and very few people over the age of 20. It's enough to make a person in their mid 20s seem downright ancient.
And it's interesting to note because in the Duran fan community I most frequent, the range of ages of people who frequent it is from about 15 to 55, with most people being in their late 20s - early 30s. So Phill, you would definitely be in the majority.

Exactly the reason I won't participate in the official MTV site is that it's teeming with youngsters as the example posted here indicated, though I have nothing against them per-se, I just want to keep the conversation a little bit more mature.

Figures, the ones that where teenagers in the early 80s, when Duran Duran first became popular, yeah I'd say most of the people I know that likew DD are within 5 years of my age.

Daria herself. She's intelligent, courageous, ethical, individualistic, and uncompromising about the important things in life. She's head and shoulders above the nimnoes who you see on the vast majority of sitcoms, or for that matter dramatic TV shows.
I also have a serious soft spot for Jane. She's not as brave as Daria, but she's intelligent, creative, and capable of warmth to those she cares for. I feel really sad for the stuff she's been going through in the last few eps, and I hope things turn out ok for her.

Currently, it has to be "Dye, Dye". Other eps I've really liked are "Pierce Me" and "Road Worriers." I like the show in general, too.
Probably "Murder, She Snored." Just too broad a parody, and not a very insightful dream.

Really impressed by it. Most shows would not be able to have such a major change in the relationships of their main characters, and handle it so plausibly and in a manner consistent with the characters' own personalities.
Probably, though it would really _hurt_ if some MTV whiz kid executive took control and "improved" the show. Everyone who's had a favorite series ruined knows _exactly_ what I mean by this!
It was the first episode that showed Daria in a vulnerable position (she was having one piece of bad luck after another); the first in which she realized that she had charisma (Trent and Jesse both liked her); and the first in which she deeply connected with Trent (the conversation in which she inspired him to stick by his dream).
There is _no_ way that Daria can avoid losing some of her innocence after the events of DDMD. She kissed a guy, and it was her best friend's boyfriend. Her relationship with Jane can never be the same again, no matter what she decides to do about Tom.
Growing up was inevitable. This, however, was a very sudden and dramatic turn of events. _Much_ more disruptive of her life than if she'd gotten involved with Trent (which Jane would have approved of).
_Very_ well written, by the way. All this happened without anyone stepping out of character. Not easy to do with a major life change.
I started getting into the show when "Road Worrier" first aired; I REALLY got hooked after seeing and taping all the Season 1 eps on the first Daria Day back in '98.
Three-way tie: a. Daria -- her honesty is refreshing, and she seems to be less cynical with every episode (this is definitely so with the past few seasons.) b. Helen -- she's a stressed-out lawyer, I'M a stressed-out lawyer -- I can relate to her drive and determination, while trying to maintain close relationships with people around me c. Jodie -- I, too, was "Queen of the Negroes" in my high school, and I always felt compelled to set the perfect example. Watching Jodie sends me into major deja-vu mode. Hopefully SHE won't graduate from high school with an ulcer like I did.

Ok, that's enough.
My favorite episodes have revolved around the evolving relationships between
Daria and the people around her. While "Road Worrier" and "Pierce Me' will
always hold special places in my heart, the eps that I've been rewinding my
tapes for are the following:
a. Jane's Addition -- BIG change in the Daria-Trent relationship, and
a foreshadowing of things to come in S4
b. Partner's Complaint -- the scenes with Jodie and the two bankers --
I could recite book, chapter & verse on very similar situations in my own life.
One of the hardest for me to rewatch because of the nerves it strikes.
c. A Tree Grows in Lawndale -- portrays Kevin in perhaps his most
competent light. (Yeah, that ain't saying much, but who knows -- if Brittany
could get some clues, maybe Kevin will, too.)
d. I Loathe a Parade -- Besides the obvious foreshadowing of the
Daria-Jane-Tom situation, the scenes with Mack & Jodie on the homecoming float
were almost a reminder of my days on that damn law school float in the
Homecoming Parade. Three years of being, as they say, the "only chip in the
cookie." More nerves rubbed raw, but the little girl in the crowd who waved at
Mack & Jodie remided them why they were up there. (It reminded me too why I
had chosen to ride the float.)
e. Of Human Bonding -- While OHB feature a lot of Jake's clodlike
behavior was in full force here, there was also a display of tenderness for his
first-born daughter, along with a display of Daria's respect for her dad.
Plus, it provided one of my all-time favorite lines from this show: Arno the
Balloonist's "I am not a hoppy thing!" comes in second only to Daria's line
from Speedtrapped ("When this is over, remimd to run screaming into the night!"
-- which I had as my screen-saver at work for months).
f. Psycho Therapy -- the long-anticipated confrontation b/t Helen and Jake
appears at last -- and their relationship survives it! Plus Daria's speech
about her family in Jean-Michel's office is one of the most moving, ranking up
their with the conversation b/t Daria & Jodie in "Gifted" and the speech in
Tom's car in my next pick.
g. Fire!/Dye! Dye! My Darling -- I look at these as a two-part episode.
Enough has been said about the resulting changes in the Daria/Jane relationship
and the Daria-Jane-Tom-Trent deal in the last few days, as well as the evolving
relationships between Daria, Helen and Quinn, so I'll skip repeating all that
here. Except let me say that I can't remember watching and rewatching an
episode of ANY series this much since the Dwayne/Whitley relationship on "A
Different World, " but THIS was a bit less contrived and definitely more
powerful. (It was three days before I could recover enough to watch it again).
Emmy people, take note!
Whew! On to the next question.
Easy: While The Daria Hunter/Fair Enough/Just Add Water were interchangeable throwaway eps with essentially the same tiresome plot, and Daria! and Depth Takes a Holiday were funny fantasy eps which were way out of place in this series, they all pale in comparison to "The Lost Girls." I refuse to subscribe to Val in any way, shape or form. I've actually become physically ill after listening to Val -- there's a sort of Mary Hart effect on me, I guess. The most irritating character to appear on Daria, hands down.
Not only am I watching and taping the movie (already have about 3 blank tapes so I can tape it the first time w/o commercials & make backup tapes upon re-airing), I have bought my sister (also a Daria fan) an new TV & VCR so she too can enjoy the movie, which airs on her birthday. (SHHHH . . . don't tell her, it's a surprise!)
Whatever happens, we'll never see the same relationship between Jane & Daria that existed in Seasons 1&2, when they were like the Two Musketeers. When Tom made that remark to Daria in "Jane's Addition" about how she was wrong to think that anyone or anything could shake her friendship with Jane, that was a clue that something WOULD come between Daria and Jane,
Also, I have the sneaking suspicion that the Movie may mark the last we see of Tom. I think that this whole messy triangle will be resolved somehow in the movie, and Tom will exit the lives of the Lanes and the Morgendorffers & disappear into his ivy-choked prep school. I would not exactly be thrilled about this -- I rather like Tom as a partner for Daria & if not for the messy way his relationship with Jane ended, he and Daria could live happily ever after -- at least until graduation. Whatever happens, Daria & Jane will spend much of Season 5 rebuilding their friendship & realizing how it truly is better to have loved & lost than never to have loved at all.
Trent will become more like the big brother Daria never had, as evidenced by these last 2 eps. I think that any romantic designs either had for the other are WAAAAAAY on the back burner. (Heck, they're back in the deep freezer in the basement.) They will be friends, but unless the whole cast moves to Alabama (where the minimum age for marriage is 13 -- YIPES!), that's as far as it's gonna go. His passion will be reserved primarily for his music (even though he'll continue to live on Slacker Standard Time).
Helen, Jake, & Eric -- not a romantic triangle, but a work-related one. Helen will likely have to choose whether to be Eric's legal partner or Jake's life partner. (I see some of my friends from law school making this decision all the time -- just a few years out of school, a lot of us have decided that no amount of money & prestige can make up for familial alienation & loss of significant others in favor of a client who pays $150 an hour.)
The Fashion Club -- this is going to get ugly (ha ha). Sandi & Quinn will battle for Top Dog (or rather Top Bitch), and this feud will spread to their families as well. In the end, Stacy will have to develop a spine -- if Brittany can start getting clues, and Daria & Jane & all the other relevant Morgendorffers & Lanes can grow & change, and Kevin can wise up A LITTLE, & Andrea can speak up about how she feels, then Stacy will have to stop acting like the Cowardly Lion & roar or she'll be stuck with Upchuck (the only character that's lacked any signifcant advance in maturity, besides the Three Js and Tiffany).
Barch and O'Neill -- I have a feeling that their relationship could be jeopardized in some way by Ms. Li, who will probably threaten to fire one or both of them for dating a co-worker. At some point, Li will overstep legal boundaries one time too many & pay very dearly for it.
Mr. deMartino -- probably not much different from the last 4 seasons. Whatever character development he makes is bound to be negated by his popping EYEball and that DRILL SERGEANT voice.
Mack & Jodie -- among the few positive characters of color on TV right now. MTV has taken care not to stereotype them (hooray!), and while I personally applaud that effort, they are becoming so BLAND! That whole "don't call me Mack Daddy" deal stopped being funny 2 seasons ago. Same with Jodie's overachieving. The most significant change they can make w/Mack: try keeping the same voice actor for more than one season.
Aunt Amy -- will brutally machine-gun Artie and Mrs. Johansen for hogging all her airtime in Season 4 (just kidding!) But after this whole Tom-mess, Daria may need somebody to turn to, girlfriend -to- girlfriend, while she & Jane are still mending fences. Amy would fit this role very well.
In short (yeah, RIGHT, Cricket -- for someone with an injured hand you're as long-winded as ever), the folks of Lawndale will continue to grow & change, mostly for the better, while the show avoids the staleness -- the "run-out-of-good-ideas" feeling that tends to affect live-action shows on the other networks.
Happens where -- in the movie? In Season 5? I have to say YES on both counts. I'm hoping the show goes on long enoough to see Daria, Jane, Mack, & Jodie graduate. (If I said I want it to go on until all the current students graduate from Laaaawwwwndale High, it could be on the air longer than Law & Order by the time Kevin graduates!)
Since the beginning, but the scheduling threw me off pretty badly. So I missed the very end of season 1, the first half of season two and the second half of season 3.
Hmm, I'm not sure. I'm quite fond of Trent, Jane, and Stacy. Guess I have a wide range of tastes there . . .
That I've seen? I'd have to say Write Where it Hurts and Pinch Sitter.
Too Cute and Daria! Although Daria! comforted me a bit by showing me that at least one other person on Earth has a worse singing voice than I do.

I don't object to the tension going on or the character development, since this keeps a show realistic, but I miss seeing some of the secondary characters (Upchuck, Andrea, Mack, Jodie, etc.).
I never give up on a show. Even if the, uh, "present story arc" (this WILL be a spoiler-free post!) gets old fast, I know that the stand- alone eps will make it worthwhile anyway.
Well if you're gonna be that way about it, maybe I should go delete the whole thing! *runs off weeping*

I'd say it's been almost two years now, or is that one? I forget. So I'll compromise: a year and a half. I saw it first when some kids I was watching turned the show on. I was wary, since it *was* MTV, but it turned out to be superb. If I remember correctly, it was "Road Worrier" that was playing that day.
I'd have to say I tend to like Mack, if only because he's the only male who's neither stupid nor lazy and unfocused. Jane is a great character, but *everybody* likes Jane.
Hands down, it has to be Ill. I'm not entirely sure why, but it has an ambiance I can't define. I think it was just very well done.
Through a Lens Darkly is also high on my list. "The Invitation" is also an honorable mention. "Daria Dance Party". I can't really decide.
"Malled" seemed a little ho-hum. "The Lost Girls" is absolutely unbearable. Good message, annoying character.

I haven't seen the most recent episodes, but I shudder to consider what may be on the horizon., I see chaos and death, lots of death (hyperbole). I see friendships severely tested, if not broken. I see a marriage on the rocks. I see a senior year filled with insanity. My predictions have come true in the past. We shall see...
Assuming I can get regular access to it, yes. I wonder how much I would end up paying if I got a cable feed with only MTV, Cartoon Network, History, and Sci Fi?
well... i remember the first episode i saw was "Pinch Sitter". It was during the year they started it.. soo i think since I was in 7th or 8th grade grade. Sheesh.. 3 or 4 years.. where has the time gone ?
I suppose I'd have to say I've always been partial to Daria. She reminds me of myself cynical,anti-socialand just not like "them" (I am more emotional though).
Ok, I'll admit it. I'm a total 'shipper. ::waits for the stones to be cast:: My favorite episode has to be "Pierce Me" because it's got shipper written all over it. Plus, I love the quote "God, Daria you have the weirdest sex dreams"
Oh I almost forgot I love "Lane Miserables" because it was just hilarious, reminded me of my family. Oh, and thinking that Daria was over trent.. let just say i spent 2 hours sobbing in the bathroom.

I like that they're exploring new ideas and finally made an episode that didn't have no real plot line, but it all depends on where they leave us in the movie, so i'll tell you ::looks at watch:: 17days, 20 hours and 44 minutes. lol. that was too hard to figure out, look what summer vacation does to your brain.

I caught an episode of Daria one Saturday morning in Fall 1998. The feel of the show immediately reminded me of the attitude of my friends in high school, which I had sorely missed ever since I had shipped off to a college that seemed to personify the MTV image at the time. (It turned out I was living in the wrong section of campus.) But anyway, I needed a good strong dose of "outcast and proud of it", and "Daria" was just that.
Yikes, tough choice. Daria, of course, is one. And Jane. Jake reminds me of myself more than I'd like to admit, plus he's usually hilarious, so I'd have to say he's a favorite of mine, too. Trent, Mack, Jodie...it'd be easier to say which characters I really *don't* like.
But if I *had* to go with one favorite, it'd be Daria.
Another tough call. I'll have to go with a season-by-season breakdown...after all, each season has had a subtle difference in tone.
Season 1) "Pinch Sitter", "Road Worrier", "Misery Chick" Season 2) "I Don't", "Monster", "See Jane Run" Season 3) "Through a Lens Darkly", "Lane Miz", "Speedtrapped", "Jane's Addition". Season 4)"I Loathe a Parade", "Fire!", "Dye! Dye!"
Picking one favorite of these would be just about impossible.
The fantasy episodes don't do much for me, but they're such a frequent target. As for regular episodes, "Just Add Water" was one retread too many.

A great one. It rivals "Taxi" as one of the darkest, most character-intensive TV comedies ever. (And by "darkest", I mean, having the fewest forced happy endings.) And "Taxi" never had the kind of continuity, foreshadowing, and tension "Daria" has, especially this season.
In all likelihood. Of course, my viewership of new Simpsons episodes has trailed off, but somehow I don't think Glenn Eichler would let what has happened to the Simpsons of late happen to Daria.
"The Simpsons" went from brillant to...well...FOX-quality. Just watching the new episodes makes me sick. And sad. No, that won't happen to Daria. We can't let it.
I've tried to keep watching....honest I have. But it's just not as good as the old re-runs they show here on 7:30pm. As for Daria going down that sorry path....let's hope not, as long as the original creative staff is still around.
There are still individual lines and moments in each episode of "The Simpsons" that make me laugh a lot. And occasionally they still come up with a brilliant episode, such as last season's finale "Behind The Laughter".....a spoof of VH1's "Behind the Music," with the same announcer and graphics and so on.
Announcer: "Next week on 'Behind the Laughter': Huckleberry Hound." HB: "I was soooo gay....but I couldn't tell anyone."
Yeah. Then I remember, "there used to be entire *episodes* of the Simpsons that made me laugh alot." Reruns are the only thing left. I'd say the series'll probably be cancelled, oh, by the end of next season (season 12). Season 13, tops.
But the ratings have not gone down much over the last few years. It's still a moneymaker for Fox. Unless the creators put an end to it or the ratings plunge, it could go on and on and on and on....
I don't know... I think Daria's already got one foot on the yellow brick road of unimaginitive programming. It's really going to depend on how the whole situation from DDMD gets resolved. Angst-ifying the show (like the whole car scene at the end of Fire!, the scene at the end of DDMD, etc.) is not going to fly with many viewers, myself included. True, I think they have done a decent job with the plot so far but there have been more and more moments that are changing the whole direction of the show and I don't know if I like where it's heading.
The alternative, though, would be to show Daria (the character) as a never-changing, never-evolving misanthrope, stuck in a rut of loneliness and uninvolvement. And this simply wouldn't make sense ... Daria's cynical and doesn't open up easily, but she _does_ have strong emotions and has previously demonstrated considerable charism.
I think that the way they've handled Daria's evolution from teenage girl to young woman has been very classy so far. They haven't had her step out of character just to provide a cheap thrill or do an After-School Special kind of episode, so far.
I think that Daria's going to wind up involved with someone (probably Tom, possibly Trent), but hey, that's life. I don't think that they're going to start portraying her as trashy, if that's what you're worried about.
Also having her involved with another person opens the door to storytelling possibilities... how is Daria going to handle something she's never dealt with before? Will it force her to open up more to others? What is Tom's life like? How will Quinn deal with the fact that her loser sister has a new beau, and a rich beau at that? And what about Jane? No, I don't think they're angstifying the show at all; instead they're adding some dimensions
Look, all they've done is give Daria (and us) something to think about, other than the traditional Trent/Daria-will-they-or-won't-they scenario we've gotten for three seasons. And maybe that's the problem.
No, I think the fear is that she'll become a wishy washy character worrying about her "man". There will be a relationship of some kind, folks. It's gone too far for anything else to happen. But since we haven't been let down in four seasons let's see what transpires, ok?
Exactly. Daria is going to be in new situations if she falls in love.
I really don't see the show becoming a schmaltzy love-fest. If for no other reason than that _both_ of the guys who like Daria like her the way that she is.
