It's been asked, I gather, but who has or had Daria lives in high school? I drew a lot of the obvious similarities from the show and my own high school life, but I thought about it more recently. More specifically, I had a best friend who was a lot like Jane. If it wasn't for the fact that we are both guys, we could have been Daria and Jane. He was even tall and skinny, had the same posture, and carried himself very much like Jane does.
Also, I was like Daria in a few ways. Why did people treat us like crap anyway? We didn't do anything, but we still got that s--- anyway. And I was an observer who was amused by the other students and could make fun of them like nobody's business. I had a kind of emotionless deadpan presence as well. But enough of that... the best friend thing is kinda freaky. He was a bit rough around the edges like Jane, and I acted more like Daria. He'd always have some smartass comment and we'd play off each other just like the dialogue from the show. He was more social and had a bit more luck with dating just like Jane, whereas I was at about Daria's level. But he was still what the kids call a "freak" (although I don't think we used this word in my school), and was about the same level of outcast-ness (hey, new word!) as I was. I wore glasses, he didn't. He came from a stranger family than I did which contributed to his behavior. It was easier to hang out at his place than at mine, just like Daria is always at Jane's but rarely the other way around. Probably because his parents weren't present very often whereas mine were sorta like Daria's - slightly embarrassing and nosy, a little more difficult to stand, and somehow always present even though they were both busy. Heck, I can quote Helen Morgendorffer and my mom saying the same thing to the letter sometimes. The big difference is that I was the artist type and he wanted to write (although he wrote fairly badly). And the strange thing is that I remember back to elementary school and I had another best friend who also looked and acted the same way (relative to elementary school, anyways).
So what gods decided to do this, huh? What other odd coincidence stories are out there?
Well, we got along pretty well, but nowadays we don't hang out. We honestly didn't have all that much in common other than some of the strange and various popular media we would partake in. I wonder how possible it is that maybe Daria and Jane might drift apart eventually, assuming the show goes on forever (as it should)?
