tech glitches? or do i need a new pair of glasses? (#301)

Ok, just wondering if it was me, or did TALD seem a little blurry in places? (Feed: DirecTV East) Ordinarily, the video is excellent on this dish thingy (hope I don't get *too* technical), but it seemed as though there were blurred lines on the wider shots during this ep-- especially during the scene between Daria and Helen in Daria's room-- when they pulled out to the shot of the two of them, the outlines got kinda blurry-- almost like ghosts. And, no, not a cloud in the sky-- in fact the commercials came out better than the ep, picture-quality-wise. That, and an audio bobble in the end credits as well. *Sigh* Speaking of twisted little crullers,<g> -- (I *love* that line!) someone needs to drop one in the tech. dept. again, methinks.

(yeah, caught it on the SVHS, SP... and I'll fill out a form. again. *sigh*)

In case no one understands immediately what I'm saying: The cel is a piece of painted transparent film overlying the background. If the film isn't lying exactly flat against the background, if it's curling up just a little, then the lights coming in at an angle will cast a shadow off the opaque edges of the painting that will be seen by the camera. BTW, I wonder if they're going to be selling Daria cels like so many other animated productions do. How much would a Daria cel be worth? I remember the story that Disney couldn't sell the cels from their movie "The Little Mermaid" since they didn't use cels, it was all done on computer, so they made up some cels just to sell to collectors. Wouldn't it be cool? Your own painting of Daria, suitable for framing?

You're right. It wasn't computer-animated -at all-, as a matter of fact. It was the last completely (cels and backgrounds) hand-drawn Disney feature film.

You're thinking of "Beauty and the Beast." It was the first Disney feature to have any computer animation, namely, the backgrounds in the ballroom dancing scene and the "Be Our Guest" bits. Also, the cels from "B&TB" were painted by computer. It -is- true that no production cels have been sold (to my knowledge) from any Disney film after "Mermaid." Notice I said -production- cels, which are the actual pieces used in the making of the film. There have been reproductions created for the collector's market for all of Disney's films.

No. For one, that's a really bass-ackward way to perform animation, and two, I own the 1999 Daria calendar. Most of the pictures are cels from the show, and on a -few,- you can see minor imperfections, where the cel painters "got outside the lines." And c), there were shots of paint cans and color keys in the "Seventeen" back-to-school issue Daria article.

Our "Little Mermaid" cel set my wife back $2750, which is actually pretty cheap as far as Disney feature animation goes. (There were cels from TLM that went for as much as $12,000 at auction.) Production cels from TV animation (in my experience, your reality may vary) range from $250 to $1000+, depending on such factors as demand (popular character=more $), pose (awkward character poses= less $), and supply (if you want an Aunt Amy cel, yer gonna pay through the nose! (: )

Anyway, we're all just speculating here. There's been -no- noise from Anyone Who Matters about "Daria" cels being released, this is all just idle speculation on my part.
