But Proms are for Tossers! (#303 spoilers)

Like the header says, SPOILERS for anyone who's managed to miss the ten million airings of "Depth Takes a Holiday". I sure haven't. Seems like every episode I tape turns out to be this one. :/

Anyway.

What the heck is a "tosser"?! I gather it's a derogatory British term, but what the heck does it mean? It's funny as hell, whatever it is. That scene cracks me up, but then I have a weak spot for Britishisms like "bullocks" and "shut ya gob!".

More seriously... I think the reason this episode fell flat for most folks wasn't simply that it had fantastical elements like holidays embodied as living magical people, but rather that it almost totally failed to use them in any meaningful way. Jake and Helen's little Cupid-triggered love fest was about it; otherwise, the entire plot -- someone enlists Daria's help to get someone else to return home; Quinn wears herself out trying to keep the parents apart -- could have been done with normal characters in a normal setting.

That said, there were a few fine moments -- mostly featuring Guy Fawkes Day. "But proms are for tossers!" "I'd probably say... BULLOCKS! But that's just a reflexive reaction." "Yeah, bullocks!" I love the way Jane's eyes light up when she says that. Shoot, I'd love to have seen the entire plot center around a bitter British punk rocker who somehow ends up at Lawndale High, and just cut the supernatural junk out entirely...

I actually prefer not to use spoiler space.

WAIT, wait, don't roast me; I DO put in spoiler protection. I just do it in the form of rambling text that doesn't contain spoilerish material. It's more entertaining, and more importantly it accomodates those whose newsreaders don't acknowledge multiple return spaces (believe it or not, there are such beasts. Don't know any names, but they do exist.) And just for the record, I actually do use a UNIX reader, normally. It's only got about 20-30 lines on a screen! It's the folks with gigantic Windows-based readers like Netscape that have 40-50 lines on their screens...

A good way to take up some space is a line like this, with a big all-caps SPOILER WARNING in it.

See? That's a good 15-20 lines, right there. :]

Heh. Anyway.

Phah. I'm sold on slrn. :]

Oops. My infamous powers of mis-spelling strike again.

Yes... but I'd wager folks would be more forgiving if the "violation" had been handled better. The British/Irish humor could have been worked in differently, in a realistic manner. The far-out bits that were supposed to be funny because they were wierd -- Holiday Island, the "dimensional wormhole behind the Chinese take-out", three holidays coming to Lawndale in search of a guitarist -- just weren't that funny (IMO, of course, since humor's a very subjective thing.) My friends in high school used to come up with funnier stuff than any of the absurdist bits in this ep. Which leaves only the Jake&Helen subplot and its effect on Quinn, which was one of the few bits that actually worked for me.

As it was, I spent the whole episode waiting for Daria to wake up from the dream. When she didn't, my reaction was: "Well, that was kinda pointless." At least as a dream we could write it off as an exploration of Daria's bizarre subconscious... ("You have the weirdest sex dreams!")

As did I... I found it to be a very pleasant surprise, especially considering I'm not a huge fan of musicals.

Yeah... I was oddly irked when I realized I'd caught up on all the Season 1 & 2 episodes, and there'd be nothing new for me till Season 3 started.

At least we're guarenteed (IIRC) a fourth season after this one. Take what you can get...

Me on hearing that line: "Didn't we leave that joke back on Beavis and Butt-Head?"

Wooo hooo the return of spoiler space!! Witness the all the thrills, close calls, and excitement of the original one, but better, really!

It's one of Britain's many terms for masturbation. One person who pointed this out of a newsgroup mentioned thelarge number of Eskimo words for snow compared to the large number of British terms for masturbation and their relative importance :)

"Hey, don't knock it, it's sex with someone I love" -Woody Allen.

Well, I'm good to see we have one of my Universal Newsgroup Topics down. And, let's see... we've discussed Catch-22 and beer... have we got to Frank Zappa? I was wondering when it was Zappa started selling fish sticks. Ah, and for those of you who might say that's evidence of a lack of intelligence on Trent's part, well, I have that album (Weasels Ripped my Flesh) and I can see the confusion.

I'd like to volunteer former crush subject Johnny Rotten for this particular character's RL equivalent. I'm sure he'd be one of the insane people ever shown on "Daria". :)

deena lissa and yes, I did have a crush on Johnny Rotten (when he was John Lydon and in PiL) once, a few years back

In some places it hasn't been aired once yet, so that's why there's spoilers. :)
