Reading the "What's With MTV?" thread, it's just struck me how much I enjoy reading where the off-topic discussions in this group go. Everywhere from subjective truth to quantum physics to pornography, and occasionally we even talk about Daria. ;-) I honestly enjoy the off-topic conversations on philosophy, etc., more than the on-topic threads. Partly, because we've discussed the same stuff about Our Heroine so many times that many things feel like only a reiteration of something already discussed, and the off-topic threads are often about things new and interesting to me.

This newsgroup is the one that's led me to think about how the world works in a different way, more objectively. It's taught me that just because the views of another are different than mine, doesn't make them wrong. I learn a lot more here than I ever have at school, partly because the atmosphere here is a _lot_ more conducive to learning.

As the youngest here (I think I still am, anyway... nobody's challenged me for the position, anyway) I feel that I've been one of the people who's benefitted the most from the extensive OT discussion that goes on here. You've all inspired me to become better-read, to think on a deeper level, and to follow the example of Our Heroine in intellectual persuits. Thanks, atd. :-)

The way that threads here mutate into desultory and sometimes learned discussion about anything under the sun is, for me, one of the charms of atd.

I think it says a lot about the sort of people who enjoy _Daria_ that this ng is, most of the time, like a common room for people who enjoy exchanging views in courteous, open-minded dialogue (vs bad-tempered, point-scoring arguments).
