Of course I read season 4 is starting Next Saturday (my birthday BTW) on the Irony Maiden, so I was just wondering what episode was on the Saturday just gone. Daria has not been on for a while, so I was was surprised to see it in the TV schedule. What I want to hear is that Channel 5 just grabbed an episode at random to plug a schedule hole.
What I don't want to hear is that it was 4.1 being shown early. Can anybody fill me in?

Good job too, given that the Powerpuff Girls has just been scaled back from six days a week to just one! I need my fix of animation and somehow Pok�mon doesn't fill the gap! I've just been reduced to downloading accursed Kamishibai from otakuworld (and boy are those stories dire with a capital D-I-R-E!). Roll on S4 Daria.
Still, there was an absolutely brilliant episode of PpG on Saturday to end the intensive episode run - a very Twin Peaksy backwards/negative nightmare sequence (screenshots on my tv page) with the Sandman in the PpG equivalent of Daria!, an episode all in verse, and my were those rhymes BAAAD (as in terrible!) Probably the most contrived doggerel of the decade, but great visuals as always.

Unless you have Cartoon Network. A new (to the UK) series of PPG is presently being screened on CN. Last night I missed it, and so did my VCR. But, hey, it'll come round again.
CN is the only paid-for channel I have. I'd heard so much about PPG from Daria fans whose judgement I respect, that I signed up for the OnDigital package so I could see it. GBP7 a month buys me the free-to-air Digital channels plus CN. Worth it? Well, at the time, C5 hadn't bought PPG, so, yes. And there's some good stuff on BBC Choice and BBC Knowledge; not to mention BBC News 24.
I don't know if this will interest you, Shez: PPG merchandise is now imported to the UK by Toy Options Ltd, and the Warner Bros Studio Stores now stock it (or at least the one at Merry Hill does).

I'm strictly a terrestrial tv viewer. I think I'll leave the digital stuff until they make it so that you don't lose your picture for five seconds every time someone turns a light switch on or off - that would drive me crazy.
I'm still not convinced of the VFM of satellite/cable/digital. If there was an "Adam & Joe" channel or similar devoted to good homegrown shows then I might be tempted, but most of the stuff seems to be sports, repeats, or US filler material, and I'm already seeing something like 50% US TV shows on the terrestrial channels. An otaku channel devoted to Japanese anime would be cool, but there don't seem to be any interesting choices like that in the channel lists I've seen. At one time I might have been interested in something like the Discovery Channel, but I can't help noticing that all the dumbed-down documentaries on the terrestrial channels are "Discovery co-productions" which is not a good sign. Everything seems to be style over substance these days.
Sadly UK TV seems to be going into a rapid decline, I notice that children's ITV now has ad breaks in the middle of shows, something that didn't used to be allowed - now there's an ad break every 11 minutes, it's enough to drive you crazy unless perhaps you're severely dehydrated and need the chance to go put the kettle on every few minutes. I hate it when my concentration on a show keeps being broken by ad breaks. Luckily C5 still show Powerpuff Girls and Daria without ad breaks. Does Cartoon Network have ad breaks? If it's subscription it ought to be ad-free but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it isn't.
I'm not a merchandisey sort of person, the closest I came to that was buying the Daria Diaries, and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed, at heart I guess I'm just an old-fashioned TV junkie - if it doesn't move and speak at 50 fields a second then I'm not really interested. Speaking of which I was just trying to convert a Powerpuff Girls clip into realvideo earlier today, a nightmare dream sequence with moving lines, and it was very hard to get the lines appearing to move in the right direction! The realvideo frame-rate optimiser was making them go the wrong way, like wagon wheels do on cinema films. In the end I had to turn off the optimisation use a fixed 12.5 fps frame rate. Oddly enough this resulted in sharper pictures *and* smoother motion than the "optimised" output had been producing! (Result is now up on my tv page, FWIW, though it doesn't seem to be playing back properly when I try it myself over the web, the picture keeps freezing for some reason though the audio continues.)

As a general rule, I agree. Too much stuff is market-research led: find out what people already like, and give them more of it. Don't offer anything that would alienate part of the audience by making them think! Innovation is so rare, that stylistic makeovers are mistaken for innovation.
Having said that, there are honourable exceptions. There is some good stuff on BBC Knowledge.

I got both Daria books and both videos, but I can't imagine buying, say, Daria soft toys. A talking Daria doll? Only if it had a suitably subversive script. "Oh, yeah, how I love standing on your mantelpiece." "For pity's sake, take the batteries out now." "This toy also makes a useful weapon."
Perhaps the optimisation fell over when it found all the sharp edges.
