Daria and her feelings - #308 ("Lane Miserables") Spoiler

(That's not -really- a spoiler, is it? ^_^)

One the most striking things I found in "Lane Miserables" was Daria's openness about the turmoil of feelings she had going on inside her. If the events of this episode had happened last season, she would have denied everything and clammed up, but she's learning that she can show some vulnerability (in front of Jane and, to some degree, Quinn) concerning her feelings.

Eventually Daria will learn that she can, and that she should, learn to trust her family and friends with her feelings. As she opens up, it will make the interactions with people around her (including her favorite nocturnal musician) that much more interesting.

Brian, who's just glad there's new "Daria" for us to fuss about... :)

I think what's going on there is Quinn and Jane caught her at a very vulnerable time. She had just watched the guy she's crazy about go out with a girlfriend. This kind of bashes some of her hopes or possibly fantasies and drives reality home. So she was caught off guard and obviously couldn't hide what she had been feeling. She couldn't cover it up with sacrasm or brush it off. Also, you have to consider she'd just been talking to Trent in her bedroom which is probably the coolest thing to ever happen to her, so one minute she's euphoric (with hormones no doubt) and the next minute her bubble is burst when Trent just gets up and goes out on his date. That's a bit hard to recover from.

Very good point. And Jane and Quinn both actually gave Daria good advice, did you notice that?

I agree.

At least if she talked to Trent more openly about her real concerns she would have less uncertainity about his motivations.

Yep. As flippant as some of Quinn's advice may have seemed at the time, it did help give Daria some perspective on her situation which she hadn't given much thought before.

I think Quinn's willingness to help was due to Daria having a problem to which she could relate (guys) and, thankfully, Daria only offering token resistance to the advice. This is the beginning of a better relationship between the two, I think.

All part of the "Damn" she said at the end of the episode. It was in some way, at least to me, an acknowledgement to herself that her feelings for him weren't going to go away that easily and that she'd still have to deal with them sooner or later.
