What other languages is Daria Shown in?
ONE COMPLICATED ONE: I think Daria is shown in some non-engish speaking countries. The show seems rather tuned into AMERICA so I wonder how it looks to non-americans. Do they not get some of the jokes? (Kind of like when we watch a british sit-com even) OR are the themes so universal that it doesn't matter?
As a British person I didn't realise at first that characters such as the tattoo shop owner were meant to be English, though I think I'm getting better at spotting the accent now (am I right in thinking the baby in "Family Guy" is supposed to have an English accent? Also Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons?)
Overall I don't think there are as many obscure Americanisms in Daria as in some other shows (unless perhaps they are simply going straight over my head without my realising it). I remember being bemused for years about the term "homecoming queen" in Twin Peaks, as the term "homecoming" made me assume Laura Palmer must have been away (perhaps to college). Also terms like "homeroom", which I had to ask an American pen friend about. However I don't recall such words being used in Daria. I recall the holiday of Thanksgiving was discussed on atd a year or two back, though it seems to have been definitively explained in "Addams Family Values" anyway, so there is probably less confusion about it here these days.
Daria's dismissal of Guy Fawkes Day (actually Guy Fawkes Night, or more commonly Bonfire Night) as being of no consequence in Depth Takes a Holiday was kind of weird, as it's a big occasion here, much much bigger than Halloween for instance. It's at moments like that that it hits home that the show is from a different culture.
In general I think they are. However most countries are awash with US TV shows anyway so to some extent maybe we've probably picked up some of the stuff by osmosis. (That children in the UK have taken to "trick or treating" at Halloween is a direct result of American TV shows - it was previously unknown here, though in the North of England there has always been a more sinister equivalent known as Mischief Night, which might be characterised as "trick or trick"!) To my mind, the US setting of shows simply reinforces the fantasy element though, and the fact that everything is slightly different helps in the suspension of disbelief. If I wanted realism I would tend to pick Australian TV series, which are culturally much closer to Britain whilst still being set in exotic locations.
Swear words (or at least, words considered unacceptable for broadcasting in children's programmes) differ somewhat which can lead to censorship problems, with words like "bloody", "bollocks", "fanny", etc. being edited out of US sitcoms which have daytime slots here.
I think those characters are just supposed to be pompous sons-of-bitches. The english tinged accent seems to fit this characterization (no offense to the brits).
As far as other countries absorbing American cultural references, this is something that's been going on since the first telegraph line was run across the atlantic. I study this stuff in school and it's only getting worse with the internet and satellite technologies expand. It's all a part of technological globalization.
I think it's sad. When I went to Germany, instead of hearing German music, all I heard was Britney, Britney, Britney. And this was in a small town, not a big city.
Sideshow Bob doesn't have an English accent. It's Kelsey Grammer, star of "Frasier." Basically when he's voicing Sideshow Bob he's doing Frasier Crane -- both are well-spoken, educated, very much egotistical as well.
Stewie, the baby on "FG," does have an English accent, I believe.
Actually, now that Joe has told who Sideshow Bob is voiced by, I know the precise accent. Kelsey Grammer was raised in the British Virgin Islands, I believe, so that's probably where he gets his accent and mode of speaking from. However, how the hell they got both his Frasier Crane character and the brotherly character Dr. Niles Crane (whom I wouldn't mind a little sumpin' sumpin' from *grin*) to sound the way they do when they're supposed to come from frickin' SEATTLE is a mystery only explainable by the "it's fiction...suspend your disbelief" method of thinking.

Thanks for reminding me who the actor is. I wasn't exactly fresh and chipper when I posted that. Then again, I'm not fresh and chipper *now*...in fact I'm downright exhausted...but.... And anyways, if he is gay, then it won't be the first time I've thought a gay guy was really cute. My first-ever male friend is gay and I think he's downright adorable. I also think Elton John's cute in his own way. I heard John Fugelsang (a VH1 US VJ from the early - mid '90s and co-host of the less successful "America's Funniest Home Videos" venture) is in a monogamous gay relationship, and John Fugelsang is the only VJ I've ever had a crush on. Then there's Steve Kmetko from E! News, who I think looks debonair. Hell, some of the highlights of my favorite movie "Velvet Goldmine" for me are the scenes where they show guy-guy kissing and insinuate homosexual sex. Oh geez, I almost forgot...I once had a massive crush on Michael Stipe...so, um, there you go.

Aren' t they usually? I mean, every once and awhile (okay, usually after episodes #X11, #X12, #X13, whichever happens to be the Daria/relationship ep of the season) I look at the lyrics for the songs. Especially last week's ("Sylvie" at the end of 412). The Daria staff obviously doesn't pick these songs out of a hat-- they usually convey the underlining meaning of the episode.
A little musical trivia courtesy my early '80s music-loving freak self..."I Know There's Something Going On" was produced by one Phil Collins (now late of Genesis) and he did the drumming and background vocals for this track. Que interesante, no?
And now for the stuff that requires spoiler space...
Didn't you guys totally love the progression of how this whole Daria-Tom thing turned out to be? I mean, there were no awkward leaps from "I hate you" to "I'm totally hot for you". It took the show the entire season (and 1/2 a year in Lawndale time) to get from Daria saying "I hate Tom for dragging my friend Jane away from me" to having Daria and Tom like each other enough to feel comfortable with each other to having Daria and Tom have designs for each other (toward the end of # 413). Normally, with any other TV program you would've seen this happen over the course of three episodes or so, leaving the viewer breathless and skeptical. But with this show...wow. I have so much newfound respect for the show's writers now.
I also love how Trent has transformed over this season as well. It's as if he functions better without his little sister's best friend being enamored with him. I used to be a mega 'shipper and still think there might be something more to the Daria-Trent thing that would only be revealed at the final episodes (maybe nothing more than best friends, but still). But I did recognize that with the old Trent, there would've been no hope for the future of a Daria-Trent pairing. There's a new Trent starting to develop, however, and I don't know what the writers' intentions for him but I think eventually he'll earn his wings. Maybe Trent will make Mystik Spiral one of the most popular bands in the country. Maybe Trent will strike out on his own (nods to Michelle Klein-Hass) and become a mega solo artist. I do see something spectactular in the future in store for Trent.
I just wish I could say the same with confidence for Daria and Jane. *sigh* I really wish they would work it out. Daria and Jane need each other and it would be sick if their friendship was ruined over a guy. Tom might be pretty special, but he isn't *that* special. NO guy is, at least not to a dynamic friendship.

I don't think their friendship is ruined. It might take awhile for them to get past everything that happened, but the Daria/Jane friendship is a cornerstone of the show. Without it, I think the show would collapse.
Well, I live in Sweden so I get my Daria fix through the lovely people at MTV Nordic (uhm, yeah, lovely...right). They air the original American version. Anyway, I don't think the jokes are that hard to grasp since there are so many American shows on anyway. It's no like we have culture or anything...
