Did anyone notice how MTV kept their mouths shut on Wednesday (9/1) night's episode's closing credits? About time. If they would only continue that trend. Anyway, I have a question about this episode:

When Daria says, "I think I just got over something," to that is she referring? I am guessing that it is to her feelings for Trent? This line occurs toward the end of the episode. Or is she referring to her dream about what life will be like if she gets involved with Trent? Whatever the case, I do wonder. Please help, oh watchers of D!
General concensus seems to be that she's referring to her crush on Trent... which, of course, slams her right back into the mat at the end, thanks to Trent's little comment. :-)

My personal opinion is that she has just gotten over her crush for Trent... this does not mean her feelings are gone... only that they have probably matured.

Have they? After he made his little comment, she was having a fantasy that was as unrealistic as the first one was. It's weird, too. The first fantasy on her part was about as negative as you could get-- I'd blame that on her reaction to finding out that Trent was dating someone else. I mean, just look at her expression as she's trying to imagine what life with him would be like. I think she naturally exaggerated everything to the worst possible degree in order to protect herself. We all do it-- "Ah, I didn't like her that much anyway. She snorted when she laughed." Or, "Ah, he was a mouth-breather." It's a coping mechanism for when we get hurt. She toook her anger out on him the only way she knew how.
And it's a similar thing for the second fantasy. Now she not only knows that he's available, but he's even flirting with her. Quite the emotional rollercoaster ride for someone who's as emotionally unavailable as she can be. Again, she overreacts in her fantasy because she still has strong feelings for him. I mean, if someone you were "over" asked you out, would you fantasize about being with them forever? I sure as hell wouldn't. I'd fantasize about cashing in some frequent flier miles and getting the hell out of there. But that's just me. YMMV. ;-)
In summary, then, I must respectfully disagree-- by the end of the ep she's emotionally back at Step One, and her muttering of "Damn" puts the clincher on it for me. But again, that's just my opinion.
I hate to sound like a cliche machine, but they both just need to relax, have fun, see where it goes, and not jump off of a cliff if it doesn't work out. Saves a lot of stress on the old stomach. ;-)
As usual, I think the truth lies somewhere in between.

Anyhoo, the end of Lane Miz was almost like Daria's reaction to her rollercoaster ride is like she was dizzy from the subsequent whiplash. Her feelings are still there, just more muddled and confused. If you ask me, the crush wasn't officially dead until Jane's Addition, but that's just my opinion.
The "Damn" could've also been like a "What am I wasting my time for?" "Damn." Or a "Why can't I either go for himor forget about him?" "Damn." Anyway you slice it, it shows how conflicted she has become over this.
Remember, I come from the "Occam's Razor" camp, so I expect a sitcom to come back to near default settings after every ep, with only minor adjustments. (And, of course, there are always exceptions-- I just don't think they apply in the case of this ep.)
And how much do you want to bet that Season 4 proves us both wrong? ;-)
That's assuming you consider Daria a sit-com. However, I agree that the "Damn" was meant to re-establish the status quo, I'm just offering alternatives.
I was hoping for this and I taped the last five minutes of the episode. (I'm a Pet Shop Boys fan.:) Needless to say, I was rather happy. One point for MTV.:)
Pet Shop Boys are cool. I can remember being a 13 year old watching "Classic MTV" and getting up to lip sync to "West End Girls" (I even made up a stupid little dance for it...LOL). "You got a heart of glass or a heart of stone, just you wait till I get you home, ain't got no future ain't got no past, here today built to last, in every city in every nation, from Lake Geneva to the fillout (?) station". I watched way too much "Classic MTV" and "The Big '80s". *g*
But anyways...I held my breath during that airing. I was like, "oh god no, MTV please please tell me now ;), you're not going to do a stupid voiceover are ya?". (except without the wink...can't think a wink...oh god that rhymed) And they didn't. Which was miraculous. Thank god I had the VCR running.
West End Girls isn't bad, though "Rent" and "Being Boring" are more my style.:)
